Association of basal forebrain volumes and cognition in normal aging.
2013
The basal forebrain cholinergic system (BFCS) is known to undergo moderate neurodegenerative alterations during normal aging and severe atrophy in Alzheimer's disease (AD). It has been suggested that functional and structural alterations of the BFCS mediate cognitive performance in normal aging and AD. But, it is still unclear to what extend age-associated cognitive decline can be related to BFCS in normal aging. We analyzed the relationship between BFCS volume and cognition using MRI and a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery in a cohort of 43 healthy elderly subjects spanning the age range from 60 to 85 years. Most notably, we found significant associations between general intell…
The role of the dual nature of ionic liquids in the reversed-phase liquid chromatographic separation of basic drugs.
2010
The cationic nature of basic drugs gives rise to broad asymmetrical chromatographic peaks with conventional C18 columns and hydro-organic mixtures, due to the ionic interaction of the positively charged solutes with the free silanol groups on the alkyl-bonded reversed-phase packing. Ionic liquids (ILs) have recently attracted some attention to reduce this undesirable silanol activity. ILs are dual modifiers (with a cationic and anionic character), which means that both cation and anion can be adsorbed on the stationary phase, giving rise to interesting interactions with the anionic free silanols and the cationic basic drugs. A comparative study of the performance of four imidazolium-based I…
A new approach to analysis of relationships between 137Cs activity concentrations in forest soil horizons
2013
The measurements results of 137Cs activity concentrations in forest soil profiles are discussed. In studies some simplifications were considered. First of them concerns disregarding of soil subtype in data analysis. However initially this parameter was considered in data analysis, it was finally ignored. The second assumption drops information about specific soil horizon. Description of 137Cs accumulation is based on relationships between its relative activity concentrations in soil layers. The model formulation was based on the results of exploratory data analysis of the relative 137Cs activity concentrations. In studies the methods designed for compositional data analysis were used. The r…
Growth patterns at distal radius and tibial shaft in pubertal girls: a 2-year longitudinal study.
2005
Bone changes, in terms of both size and BMD, were assessed longitudinally in pubertal girls. Before puberty, BMD at the distal radius declined, whereas bone size increased, suggesting that normal growing girls experience a transient period of increased bone fragility. This could explain the elevated low-trauma forearm fracture rates reported in earlier studies. Introduction: Longitudinal data on bone growth during puberty are sparse. Such information is needed to understand the sequence of biological changes, the physical and mechanical consequences for the growing skeleton, and the implications for later life. Materials and Methods: The geometric properties and volumetric BMD (vBMD) of the…
Integrated treatment of first episode psychosis with online training (e-learning): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
2014
Background: The integrated treatment of first episode psychosis has been shown to improve functionality and negative symptoms in previous studies. In this paper, we describe a study of integrated treatment (individual psychoeducation complementary to pharmacotherapy) versus treatment as usual, comparing results at baseline with those at 6-month re-assessment (at the end of the study) for these patients, and online training of professionals to provide this complementary treatment, with the following objectives: 1) to compare the efficacy of individual psychoeducation as add-on treatment versus treatment as usual in improving psychotic and mood symptoms; 2) to compare adherence to medication,…
Preliminary Estimation of Deoxynivalenol Excretion through a 24 h Pilot Study
2015
A duplicate diet study was designed to explore the occurrence of 15 Fusarium mycotoxins in the 24 h-diet consumed by one volunteer as well as the levels of mycotoxins in his 24 h-collected urine. The employed methodology involved solvent extraction at high ionic strength followed by dispersive solid phase extraction and gas chromatography determination coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. Satisfactory results in method performance were achieved. The method"s accuracy was in a range of 68%108%, with intra-day relative standard deviation and inter-day relative standard deviation lower than 12% and 15%, respectively. The limits of quantitation ranged from 0.1 to 8 μg/Kg. The matrix effect w…
On solving separable block tridiagonal linear systems using a GPU implementation of radix-4 PSCR method
2018
Partial solution variant of the cyclic reduction (PSCR) method is a direct solver that can be applied to certain types of separable block tridiagonal linear systems. Such linear systems arise, e.g., from the Poisson and the Helmholtz equations discretized with bilinear finite-elements. Furthermore, the separability of the linear system entails that the discretization domain has to be rectangular and the discretization mesh orthogonal. A generalized graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation of the PSCR method is presented. The numerical results indicate up to 24-fold speedups when compared to an equivalent CPU implementation that utilizes a single CPU core. Attained floating point perfor…
Mathematical models for multicontainer loading problems
2017
Abstract This paper deals with the problem of a distribution company that has to serve its customers by putting first the products on pallets and then loading the pallets onto trucks. We approach the problem by developing and solving integer linear models. We start with basic models, that include the essential features of the problem, such as respecting the dimensions of the truck, and not exceeding the total weight capacity and the maximum weigh capacity on each axle. Then, we add progressively new conditions to consider the weight and volume of pallet bases and to include other desirable features for the solutions to be useful in practice, such as the position of the center of gravity and…
ERP denoising in multichannel EEG data using contrasts between signal and noise subspaces
2009
Abstract In this paper, a new method intended for ERP denoising in multichannel EEG data is discussed. The denoising is done by separating ERP/noise subspaces in multidimensional EEG data by a linear transformation and the following dimension reduction by ignoring noise components during inverse transformation. The separation matrix is found based on the assumption that ERP sources are deterministic for all repetitions of the same type of stimulus within the experiment, while the other noise sources do not obey the determinancy property. A detailed derivation of the technique is given together with the analysis of the results of its application to a real high-density EEG data set. The inter…
The VFR Phenomenon in Italy
2015
The collection is the first book to explore research on visiting friends and relatives (VFR). In assembling an international collection of quality VFR-related research the editors present the profiles, characteristics, opportunities and behaviours of VFR travel for the benefit of researchers, industry practitioners and educators. This chapter discusses the characteristics of the phenomenon in Italy, by analysing official data as well as data drawn from purpose research.
