Computing the Cell

2015

Here I call for the need to revisit cell theory. The idea that the cell is the basic unit of life is well-known and foundational to Biology, but it has not received sufficient attention. We have increasingly detailed knowledge of the intracellular world and all its components, but these are often considered independently. On the other hand, there is excessive theorising about the cell on the basis of its being a black box. The time is ripe to formulate an integrative cell theory .

On complexity and motion planning for co-rank one sub-Riemannian metrics

2004

In this paper, we study the motion planning problem for generic sub-Riemannian metrics of co-rank one. We give explicit expressions for the metric complexity (in the sense of Jean (10,11)), in terms of the elementary invariants of the problem. We construct asymptotic optimal syntheses. It turns out that among the results we show, the most complicated case is the 3-dimensional. Besides the generic C ∞ case, we study some non-generic generalizations in the analytic case.

On the spectrum of linear combinations of two projections inC*-algebras

2010

In this note, we study the spectrum and give estimations for the spectral radius of linear combinations of two projections in C*-algebras. We also study the commutator of two projections.

Lifting paths on quotient spaces

2009

Abstract Let X be a compactum and G an upper semi-continuous decomposition of X such that each element of G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum. If the quotient space X / G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum, under what conditions is X also the continuous image of an ordered compactum? Examples around the (non-metric) Hahn–Mazurkiewicz Theorem show that one must place severe conditions on G if one wishes to obtain positive results. We prove that the compactum X is the image of an ordered compactum when each g ∈ G has 0-dimensional boundary. We also consider the case when G has only countably many non-degenerate elements. These results extend earlier work of the firs…

On the consequences of the standard polynomial

1998

The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the polynomial identities of low degree for the n × n matrix algebra over a field of characteristic 0.Our main result is that we have found all the consequences of degree n + 2 of the standard polynomial have calculated the S n+2-character of the T-ideal generated by this polynomial.

The best constant for the Sobolev trace embedding from into

2004

Abstract In this paper we study the best constant, λ 1 ( Ω ) for the trace map from W 1 , 1 ( Ω ) into L 1 ( ∂ Ω ) . We show that this constant is attained in BV ( Ω ) when λ 1 ( Ω ) 1 . Moreover, we prove that this constant can be obtained as limit when p ↘ 1 of the best constant of W 1 , p ( Ω ) ↪ L p ( ∂ Ω ) . To perform the proofs we will look at Neumann problems involving the 1-Laplacian, Δ 1 ( u ) = div ( Du / | Du | ) .

On the Efficiency of Affine Invariant Multivariate Rank Tests

1998

AbstractIn this paper the asymptotic Pitman efficiencies of the affine invariant multivariate analogues of the rank tests based on the generalized median of Oja are considered. Formulae for asymptotic relative efficiencies are found and, under multivariate normal and multivariatetdistributions, relative efficiencies with respect to Hotelling'sT2test are calculated.

Weak commutation relations of unbounded operators and applications

2011

Four possible definitions of the commutation relation $[S,T]=\Id$ of two closable unbounded operators $S,T$ are compared. The {\em weak} sense of this commutator is given in terms of the inner product of the Hilbert space $\H$ where the operators act. Some consequences on the existence of eigenvectors of two number-like operators are derived and the partial O*-algebra generated by $S,T$ is studied. Some applications are also considered.

On the Conditions of Price Consistency in the Input-Output Model

2013

The input-ouput model remains the basis of most SAM or CGE models. It actually uses two periods: the prices indexes solve it with the current period coefficients; the corresponding physical model is monoperiodic: the current prices solve it with the base period coefficients. The Leontief model is not consistent --- both models diverge generally --- unless the interindustry matrix of direct and indirect quantities of labor is stable over time. This implies that the vertically integrated labor coefficients are stable. This assumption is satisfied when the physical production coefficients and the physical labor coefficients are stable over time, two very strong assumptions.

Multistate active spaces from local CAS-SCF molecular orbitals: the photodissociation of HFCO as an example.

2005

A recently developed algorithm to generate localized molecular orbitals (LMO) is applied to the study of excited states along a photodissociation process. The LMOs allow for the selection of a consistent complete active space (CAS) for the simultaneous description of all the electronic states involved in a multistate process on the basis of simple chemical criteria. The local nature of the orbitals is used to label them in a unique way that does not depend on the molecular geometry. The selection of the electronic configurations of interest for the set of target states on only the basis of the dominant excitations required by the simplest configuration interaction (CI) descriptions for both…
