Electron crystallography and non-linear optics
1999
Electron crystallography can be used to obtain specific information about molecular parameters such as the polarisability, dipole moment, and hyperpolarisability. In this, work we show how a combination of quantum mechanics and simulation methods can be used to solve several unknown organic structures and how the calculated molecular parameters can be used to predict the corresponding physical properties of the crystals.
Potentialities of microfibers for non linear optics
2010
Micro- and nanofibers present attractive optical properties and may be used in a variety of structures and devices. We report in this work the first global study on the non linear properties of these microfibers: an adequate source is built and its characteristics are described, our first results with a silica loop resonator are presented. Third harmonic generation is obtained in these conditions, however, the low intrinsic non linear index prevents the generation of large non linear effects. The use of highly non linear materials, such as soft glasses, is therefore discussed, with their potentialities and the challenges their integration with standard microfibers represent.
Nonlinear virtues of multimode fibre
2015
The finding that multimode optical fibres support a rich and complex mix of spatial and temporal nonlinear phenomena could yield a plethora of promising applications.
Kerr self-cleaning of pulsed beam in an ytterbium doped multimode fiber
2017
International audience; We experimentally demonstrate that Kerr spatial self-cleaning of a pulsed beam can be obtained in an amplifying multimode optical fiber. An input peak power of 500 W only was sufficient to produce a quasi-single-mode emission from the double-clad ytterbium doped multimode fiber (YMMF) with non-parabolic refractive index profile. We compare the self-cleaning behavior observed in the same fiber with loss and with gain. Laser gain introduces new opportunities to achieve spatial self-cleaning of light in multimode fibers at a relatively low power threshold.
Determination of Kerr and two-photon absorption coefficients of indandione derivatives
2017
This material is based upon work supported by the ERDF 1.1.1.1 activity project Nr. 1.1.1.1/16/A/046 “Application assessment of novel organic materials by prototyping of photonic devices” as well as by National Research Program “Multifunctional Materials and Composites, Photonics and Nanotechnology” (IMIS2) project “Photonics and materials for photonics”.
Observation of laser-induced field-free permanent planar alignment of molecules
2011
International audience; Permanent planar alignment of gas-phase linear molecules is achieved by a pair of delayed perpendicularly polarized short laser pulses. The experiment is performed in a supersonic jet, ensuring a relatively high number density of molecules with moderately low rotational temperature. The effect is optically probed on a femtosecond time scale by the use of a third short pulse, enabling a time-resolved birefringence detection performed successively in two perpendicular planes of the laboratory frame. The technique allows for an unambiguous estimation of the molecular planar delocalization produced within the polarization plane of the pulse pair after the turn-off of the…
All-optical extinction-ratio enhancement of a 160 GHz pulse train by a saturable-absorber vertical microcavity
2006
International audience; A vertical-access passive all-optical gate has been used to improve the extinction ratio of a 160 GHz pico-second pulse train at 1555 nm. An extinction ratio enhancement of 6 dB is observed within an 8 nm bandwidth. Such a device is a promising candidate for low-cost all optical reamplication and reshaping (211) regeneration at 160 Gbits/s.
Higher-order Kerr terms allow ionization-free filamentation in gases
2010
International audience; We show that higher-order nonlinear indices (n4 , n6 , n8 , n10) provide the main defocusing contribution to self-channeling of ultrashort laser pulses in air and Argon at 800 nm, in contrast with the previously accepted mechanism of filamentation where plasma was considered as the dominant defocusing process. Their consideration allows to reproduce experimentally observed intensities and plasma densities in self-guided filaments.
High-order Kerr nonlinearity of air calibrated with transient molecular alignment
2009
Talk given by O. Faucher; International audience; Nonlinear electronic Kerr index of the major air constituents has been measured up to high order terms using transient molecular alignment as a reference. Sign reversal associated to negative nonlinearity is observed above a pulse intensity of 26 TW/cm^2.
