Measurement of the Angular and Lifetime Parameters of the DecaysBd0→J/ψK*0andBs0→J/ψϕ

2009

We present measurements of the linear polarization amplitudes and the strong relative phases that describe the flavor-untagged decays $B_{d}^{0}\to J/\psi K^{*0}$ and $B_{s}^{0}\to J/\psi\phi$ in the transversity basis. We also measure the mean lifetime $\bar{\tau}_{s}$ of the $B_{s}^{0}$ mass eigenstates and the lifetime ratio $\bar{\tau}_{s}/\tau_{d}$. The analyses are based on approximately 2.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded with the D0 detector. From our measurements of the angular parameters we conclude that there is no evidence for a deviation from flavor SU(3) symmetry for these decays and that the factorization assumption is not valid for the $B_{d}^{0}\to J/\psi K^{*0}$ decay.

Polarization of the Radiation Emitted in GaAs Semiconductors Driven by Far Infrared Fields

2010

The effects due to the mixing of two far infrared electric fields on the harmonic generation process in low doped GaAs bulks are studied by a three dimensional multivalleys Monte Carlo simulation. The conversion efficiency is calculated by using the appropriate Maxwell equation for the propagation of an electro-magnetic wave along a given direction in the medium. In particular, we focus our attention on the polarization of the generated harmonics, by comparing the polarization obtained from the mixing of an oscillating field with a static electric field with that obtained in the presence of two cyclostationary fields, having an integer ratio between the two frequencies. The findings show th…

Polarization of high harmonic generated spectra in H+2ion

2013

AbstractWe study the polarization of the harmonics generated by a homonuclear diatomic molecule in the presence of an intense, linearly polarized laser field. The polarization parameters of the emitted radiation are investigated as a function of the angle between the laser electric field and the molecular axis. The calculations are carried out by assuming a single active electron model with fixed nuclei; a two-dimensional model of the system is used. We find a different dependence of the parameters of the harmonics vs in the first or second half of the emitted spectrum. In particular, the differences are accentuated for , while for higher angles, until the perpendicular orientation, almost …

Polarization phenomena in a laser coherently pumped by a linearly polarized field

1998

The field intensity and polarization behaviour of an optically pumped laser is investigated in different operating conditions. For a linearly polarized pump field, a strong gain anisotropy is induced which favours generation of light with a polarization parallel to that of the pump field. Thus gain anisotropy can be counterbalanced by cavity-loss anisotropy only at low pumping field intensities, and the interplay between both types of anisotropy leads to polarization switching phenomena. In contrast to the case of the incoherently pumped laser, the decay rate for the magnetic dipole induced on the J = 1 level plays a minor role in determining the polarization dynamics. The influence of a lo…

Reduction of focus size in tightly focused linearly polarized beams

2004

The electromagnetic theory predicts that when a linearly polarized collimated field is focused by a high-angle focusing system, components perpendicular to the initial polarization are generated. The use of annular masks to reduce the area of the focal spot usually increases the magnitude of this phenomenon, known as depolarization. We present a class of masks, the three-ring masks, which are important because they narrow the central lobe of the focal intensity distribution without increasing the depolarization. This can be very useful in modern optical applications, such as confocal microscopy or multiphoton scanning microscopy.

Quadrature and polarization squeezing in a dispersive optical bistability model

2007

We theoretically study quadrature and polarization squeezing in dispersive optical bistability through a vectorial Kerr cavity model describing a nonlinear cavity filled with an isotropic chi(3) medium in which self-phase and cross-phase modulation, as well as four--wave mixing, occur. We derive expressions for the quantum fluctuations of the output field quadratures as a function of which we express the spectrum of fluctuations of the output field Stokes parameters. We pay particular attention to study how the bifurcations affecting the non-null linearly polarized output mode squeezes the orthogonally polarized vacuum mode, and show how this produces polarization squeezing.

Laser driven structured quantum rings

2015

In this work we study harmonic emission from structured quantum rings (SQRs). In SQRs, electrons trapped in two-dimensional structures are further confined by an external potential composed of N scattering centers arranged on a circle. We build a suitable one-dimensional model Hamiltonian describing this class of systems and analytically solve the associated Schödinger equation. We find that the solution can be expressed in terms of Mathieu functions and focus on the specific case of N = 6. By exactly solving the time-dependent Schödinger equation, we then show how the harmonic response to linearly polarized lasers strongly depends on the ring physical parameters. The results illustrate how…

Transverse component of the magnetic field in the solar photosphere observed by Sunrise

2010

We present the first observations of the transverse component of photospheric magnetic field acquired by the imaging magnetograph Sunrise/IMaX. Using an automated detection method, we obtain statistical properties of 4536 features with significant linear polarization signal. Their rate of occurrence is 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than values reported by previous studies. We show that these features have no characteristic size or lifetime. They appear preferentially at granule boundaries with most of them being caught in downflow lanes at some point in their evolution. Only a small percentage are entirely and constantly embedded in upflows (16%) or downflows (8%).

Cascade coherence transfer and magneto-optical resonances at 455 nm excitation of Cesium

2010

We present and experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances observed in the fluorescence to the ground state from the 7P_{3/2} state of cesium, which was populated directly by laser radiation at 455 nm, and from the 6P_{1/2} and 6P_{3/2} states, which were populated via cascade transitions that started from the 7P_{3/2} state and passed through various intermediate states. The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was observed as the magnetic field was scanned through zero. Signals were recorded for the two orthogonal, linearly polarized components of the LIF. We compared the measured signals with the results of calculations from a model that was based on the optica…

Polarization instability in anisotropic-cavity degenerate four-wave mixing

2000

Abstract The emission and stability properties of a plane-wave model of intracavity degenerate four-wave mixing including self- and cross-phase modulation are studied. A Kerr medium inside an anisotropic cavity in which a linearly polarized field is injected is considered. Cavity anisotropy leads to qualitative new phenomena such as a subcritical polarization instability.
