Concurrent and lagged effects of counterdispositional extraversion on vitality

2020

Abstract There are two contrasting perspectives on the effects of state extraversion. One states that people benefit from behaving extraverted, regardless of their level of trait extraversion. The second entails that behaving concordant to one’s trait is natural while deviations from the trait level— counterdispositional behaviors—are effortful to maintain, leading to mental fatigue. We test the possibility that both perspectives are correct, with beneficial effects of high state extraversion showing immediately, while the depleting counterdispositional effects are delayed. Experience sampling data from 67 employees (N = 1,664), shows that extraverted behaviors are associated with high leve…

Extraversion and performance approach goal orientation : An integrative approach to personality

2019

Abstract Research shows that extraversion is unrelated to performance approach goal orientation, both at the trait- and the state-level. However, since previous studies have either focused on the trait- or the state-level, such a conclusion may be premature. Building upon the idea that acting against one’s trait consumes self-control resources, we reason that within-person deviations from one’s level of trait extraversion might negatively relate to performance approach goal orientation. Using experience sampling data from 47 employees across 10 days (N = 307), we found that deviations from one’s trait extraversion levels are associated with lower levels of performance approach goal orientat…

Aportaciones al cálculo de la latitud en la náutica española de principios del siglo XVII contenidas en el manuscrito de Diego Ramírez de Arellano &l…

2013

In 1620, was named chief pilot of the Casa de Contratación de Sevilla Diego Ramírez de Arellano, author of a manuscript entitled Reconocimiento de los estrechos de Magallanes y San Vicente, con algunas cosas curiosas de navegación. He had participated in the reconnaissance mission referred by the title of the manuscript, and in that book developed same methods and tools for a nautical understood scientifically, and even used a methodology close to modern science, as in refuting the theory about Figueiredo of the linear relationship between longitude and magnetic variation of the needle navigation. This article is based on some conclusions that can get an analysis of the manuscript. It focus…

SO2emissions and the environmental Kuznets curve: the case of Chinese provinces

2009

This paper aims at estimating the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for the sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions in a panel of 28 Chinese provinces. First, using a fixed effects model, econometric findings reveal an N shape EKC with a turning point of 4500 yuans (index 1990). However, a Chow test reveals a break in 1995, so that the estimation of the model indicates an increasing linear relationship between GDP per capita and SO2 emissions. The previous results imply that the decrease of the Chinese sulphur dioxide emissions during 1996–1999 did not result from the ECK but from an exogenous public action.

Comment on “Determining soil erodibility for the USLE-MM rainfall erosion model by P.I.A. Kinnell”

2018

Abstract The measurements units of the USLE-MM soil erodibility factor are dependent on the exponent of the erosivity term. This circumstance prevents to compare soil erodibility values of sites differing by the value of this exponent. To overcame this problem, Kinnell (2018) suggested to relate the soil erodibility factor of the USLE-MM with that of USLE-M by a linear relationship with the objective to obtain a soil erodibility factor independent of the power of the erosivity term. The USLE-MB, which is a recently proposed model, has also a soil erodibility factor having measurement units common to USLE modelling environment. Kinnell (2018) also showed that the relationship between the pow…

Muscular performances at the ankle joint in young and elderly men.

2005

The effect of aging on mechanical and electromyographic characteristics of ankle joint muscles was investigated in 11 young (mean age 24 years) and 12 elderly (mean age 77 years) males. Maximal and submaximal isometric voluntary torques were measured during ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Electromyographic activities of triceps surae and tibialis anterior muscles were recorded. The elderly group developed equal maximal dorsiflexion torques (42 vs 45 N.m, p >.05), but in plantarflexion, the elderly group was weaker (80 vs 132 N.m, p <.001) and presented a decreased twitch amplitude (11 vs 16 N.m) and lower coactivation (8% vs 15%) than that of the young adults. We established a linear…

The rat liver foci bioassay: II. Investigations on the dose-dependent induction of ATPase-deficient foci by vinyl chloride at very low doses

1985

In order to study the dose-dependence of the genotoxic effect of vinyl chloride (VC) hepatocellular ATPase-deficient foci were evaluated after subchronic exposure of newborn rats. Wistar rats were exposed from day 1 after birth over 10 weeks to 10, 40, 70, 150, 500 and 2000 p.p.m. VC (8 h/day; 5 days/week). One week after cessation of exposure hepatic ATPase-deficient foci were quantitated. For a subsequent investigation lower dose range groups of female and male Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed (8 h/day; 5 days/week) to 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 p.p.m. VC. Exposure started at day 3 of life and lasted for 3 weeks. After cessation of exposure the animals were maintained for 10 wee…

Relationship between lanthanide contents in aquatic turtles and environmental exposures

2013

International audience; Trace elements released in the environment during agricultural practices can be incorporated and accumulated in biological fluids and tissues of living organisms. The assessment of these exposures were carried out investigating lanthanide distributions in blood and exoskeleton samples collected from Emys trinacris turtle specimens coming from sites with anthropogenic discharge in western and south Sicily, along migration paths of many bird species from Africa to Europe. The data show a significant (Rxy = 0.72; Rxy > 0.67; α = 0.025) linear relationship between the size of turtle specimens and the lanthanide contents in blood lower than 0.4 μg L−1 whereas this relatio…

Relation between physical activity and academic performance in 3rd-year secondary education students

2011

The main aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the amount of physical activity and academic performance in 3rd-year secondary education students. The sample was taken from three secondary schools in the area of Barcelona. 284 students (158 girls, 126 boys) with an average age of 14.7 yr. participated. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used by students to self-report their amount of physical activity. Students’ academic records were obtained for comparisons. Results showed that there was a linear relationship between academic performance and physical activity; nevertheless, there was a trend to stronger correlation when modeling the relationship betwee…

Relations between subdomains of physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, and quality of life in young adult men

2018

Purpose To assess the relationship between physical activity (PA) in work, transport, domestic and leisure-time domains (with sitting time included) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among young adult men. Methods The long version of IPAQ and SF-36 Health Survey were used to assess PA and HRQoL, respectively, in 1425 voluntary 20 to 40 year old Finnish male participants. Participants were divided into tertiles (MET-h/week): Lowest tertile ( 100 MET-h/week). Results The IPAQ domain leisure-time PA predicted positively the Physical Component Summary (PCS) (β=0.11, 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.16) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) (β=0.11, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.16) dimensions.
