Generalized Interaction-Free Evolutions

2015

A thorough analysis of the evolutions of bipartite systems characterized by the \lq effective absence\rq\, of interaction between the two subsystems is reported. First, the connection between the concepts underlying Interaction-Free Evolutions (IFE) and Decoherence-Free Subspaces (DFS) is explored, showing intricate relations between these concepts. Second, starting from this analysis and inspired by a generalization of DFS already known in the literature, we introduce the notion of generalized IFE (GIFE), also providing a useful characterization that allows to develop a general scheme for finding GIFE states.

Measurement of damping and temperature: Precision bounds in Gaussian dissipative channels

2011

We present a comprehensive analysis of the performance of different classes of Gaussian states in the estimation of Gaussian phase-insensitive dissipative channels. In particular, we investigate the optimal estimation of the damping constant and reservoir temperature. We show that, for two-mode squeezed vacuum probe states, the quantum-limited accuracy of both parameters can be achieved simultaneously. Moreover, we show that for both parameters two-mode squeezed vacuum states are more efficient than either coherent, thermal or single-mode squeezed states. This suggests that at high energy regimes two-mode squeezed vacuum states are optimal within the Gaussian setup. This optimality result i…

Hilbert space partitioning for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: From off-resonance to Zeno subspaces

2020

Abstract Effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing decaying systems are derived and analyzed in connection with the occurrence of possible Hilbert space partitioning, resulting in a confinement of the dynamics. In some cases, this fact can be interpreted properly as Zeno effect or Zeno dynamics, according to the dimension of the subspace one focuses on; in some other cases, the interpretation is more complicated and traceable back to a mix of Zeno phenomena and lack of resonance. Depending on the complex phases of the diagonal terms of the Hamiltonian, the system reacts in different ways, requiring larger moduli for the dynamical confinement to occur when the complex phase is close to…

Zeroes of real polynomials on C(K) spaces

2007

AbstractFor a compact Hausdorff topological space K, we show that the function space C(K) must satisfy the following dichotomy: (i) either it admits a positive definite continuous 2-homogeneous real-valued polynomial, (ii) or every continuous 2-homogeneous real-valued polynomial vanishes in a non-separable closed linear subspace. Moreover, if K does not have the Countable Chain Condition, then every continuous polynomial, not necessarily homogeneous and with arbitrary degree, has constant value in an isometric copy of c0(Γ), for some uncountable Γ.

Principal polynomial analysis for remote sensing data processing

2011

Inspired by the concept of Principal Curves, in this paper, we define Principal Polynomials as a non-linear generalization of Principal Components to overcome the conditional mean independence restriction of PCA. Principal Polynomials deform the straight Principal Components by minimizing the regression error (or variance) in the corresponding orthogonal subspaces. We propose to use a projection on a series of these polynomials to set a new nonlinear data representation: the Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA). We prove that the dimensionality reduction error in PPA is always lower than in PCA. Lower truncation error and increased independence suggest that unsupervised PPA features can be b…

Poincaré Type Inequalities for Vector Functions with Zero Mean Normal Traces on the Boundary and Applications to Interpolation Methods

2018

We consider inequalities of the Poincare–Steklov type for subspaces of \(H^1\)-functions defined in a bounded domain \(\varOmega \in \mathbb {R}^d\) with Lipschitz boundary \(\partial \varOmega \). For scalar valued functions, the subspaces are defined by zero mean condition on \(\partial \varOmega \) or on a part of \(\partial \varOmega \) having positive \(d-1\) measure. For vector valued functions, zero mean conditions are applied to normal components on plane faces of \(\partial \varOmega \) (or to averaged normal components on curvilinear faces). We find explicit and simply computable bounds of constants in the respective Poincare type inequalities for domains typically used in finite …

Spaces of holomorphic functions in regular domains

2009

AbstractLet Ω be a regular domain in the complex plane C, Ω≠C. Let Gb(Ω) be the linear space over C of the holomorphic functions f in Ω such that f(n) is bounded in Ω and is continuously extendible to the closure Ω¯ of Ω, n=0,1,2,… . We endow Gb(Ω), in a natural manner, with a structure of Fréchet space and we obtain dense subspaces F of Gb(Ω), with good topological linear properties, also satisfying that each function f of F, distinct from zero, does not extend holomorphically outside Ω.

Inner functions and local shape of orthonormal wavelets

2011

Abstract Conditions characterizing all orthonormal wavelets of L 2 ( R ) are given in terms of suitable orthonormal bases (ONBs) related with the translation and dilation operators. A particular choice of the ONBs, the so-called Haar bases, leads to new methods for constructing orthonormal wavelets from certain families of Hardy functions. Inner functions and the corresponding backward shift invariant subspaces articulate the structure of these families. The new algorithms focus on the local shape of the wavelet.

Notes on the subspace perturbation problem for off-diagonal perturbations

2014

The variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under an additive bounded off-diagonal perturbation is studied. To this end, the optimization approach for general perturbations in [J. Anal. Math., to appear; arXiv:1310.4360 (2013)] is adapted. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of general perturbations, the corresponding optimization problem can not be reduced to a finite-dimensional problem. A suitable choice of the involved parameters provides an upper bound for the solution of the optimization problem. In particular, this yields a rotation bound on the subspaces that is stronger than the previously known one from [J. Reine Angew. Math. (2013), DOI:10.1515/cre…

Ulam Stability for the Composition of Operators

2020

Working in the setting of Banach spaces, we give a simpler proof of a result concerning the Ulam stability of the composition of operators. Several applications are provided. Then, we give an example of a discrete semigroup with Ulam unstable members and an example of Ulam stable operators on a Banach space, such that their sum is not Ulam stable. Another example is concerned with a C 0 -semigroup ( T t ) t &ge
