Transverse patterns in degenerate optical parametric oscillation and degenerate four-wave mixing.
1996
Transverse pattern formation in both degenerate optical parametric oscillation and degenerate four-wave mixing is considered both theoretically and numerically. In the limit of small signal detuning both systems are shown to be described by the real Swift-Hohenberg equation. Contrarily, for small signal and large pump detunings the Swift-Hohenberg equation is modified differently in both systems, by the appearance of additional nonlinear terms, which signal the existence of nonlinear resonances that are theoretically studied through the derivation of the amplitude equation for the roll pattern in both systems. Numerical analysis supports the theoretical predictions. \textcopyright{} 1996 Th…
Solitary excitations in one-dimensional magnets
1991
Abstract The present status of theoretical and experimental investigations of solitary excitations in one-dimensional magnetic systems is reviewed. A survey of exact solutions to the nonlinear equations of motion for pertinent classical chain systems (sine-Gordon chain and ferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with various anisotropies) is given. Particular emphasis is devoted to the role of solitons in the thermodynamics of such systems. Models corresponding to real quasi-one-dimensional magnets are broadly discussed to demonstrate the properties of their solitary excitations. The experimental significance of such nonlinear excitations in the static and dynamic quantities of such systems is disc…
GAP solitons in 1D asymmetric physical systems
2008
We present a general approach for studying the nonlinear transmittance and gap solitons characteristics of asymmetric and one dimensional (1 D) systems in the low amplitude or Nonlinear Schrodinger limit. Included in this approach are some novel results on naturally asymmetric systems and systems where the symmetry is broken by an external constant force.
LONG TIME DYNAMICS OF MODULATED WAVES IN A NONLINEAR DISCRETE LC TRANSMISSION LINE
2003
The long-time dynamics of modulated waves in a nonlinear LC transmission line is investigated. Considering the higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we define analytically the conditions leading to the instability of modulated waves. We show that two kinds of instabilities may develop in the network depending on the frequency range of the chosen carrier wave and on the magnitude of its initial amplitude, which is confirmed by our numerical simulations. The nonreproducibility of numerical experiments on modulated waves is also considered.
Efficient adiabatic tracking of driven quantum nonlinear systems
2013
We derive a technique of robust and efficient adiabatic passage for a driven nonlinear quantum system, describing the transfer to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate from an atomic one by external fields. The pulse ingredients are obtained by tracking the dynamics derived from a Hamiltonian formulation, in the adiabatic limit. This leads to a nonsymmetric and nonmonotonic chirp. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated in terms of classical phase space, more specifically with the underlying fixed points and separatrices. We also prove the crucial property that this nonlinear system does not have any solution leading exactly to a complete transfer. It can only be reached asymptotically …
Ansatz-independent solution of a soliton in a strong dispersion-management system
2000
We introduce a theoretical approach to the study of propagation in systems with periodic strong-management dispersion. Our approach does not assume any ansatz about the form of the solution nor does it make use of any average procedure. We find an explicit solution for the pulse evolution in the fast dynamics regime (distances smaller than the dispersion period). We also establish the equation of motion governing the slow dynamics of an arbitrary pulse and prove that the pulse evolution is nonlinear and Hamiltonian. We solve this equation and find that a nonlinear solitonlike solution occurs self-consistently in the form of an asymptotic stationary eigenfunction of the Hamiltonian.
Discrete-ring vortex solitons
2010
We study analytically and numerically the existence and stability of discrete vortex solitons in the circular arrays of nonlinear optical waveguides, governed by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Stable vortex breathers with periodically oscillating topological charge are identified and a continuous interpolating map is constructed which allows to recover trajectories of individual phase dislocations in the form of hyperbolic avoided crossings.
IMEX Finite Volume Methods for Cloud Simulation
2017
We present new implicit-explicit (IMEX) finite volume schemes for numerical simulation of cloud dynamics. We use weakly compressible equations to describe fluid dynamics and a system of advection-diffusion-reaction equations to model cloud dynamics. In order to efficiently resolve slow dynamics we split the whole nonlinear system in a stiff linear part governing the acoustic and gravitational waves as well as diffusive effects and a non-stiff nonlinear part that models nonlinear advection effects. We use a stiffly accurate second order IMEX scheme for time discretization to approximate the stiff linear operator implicitly and the non-stiff nonlinear operator explicitly. Fast microscale clou…
Long-Range interaction of temporal incoherent solitons
2014
Contrary to conventional solitons, temporal incoherent solitons are sustained by a defocusing nonlinearity with anomalous dispersion and exhibit a non-mutual attractive-repulsive interaction. We explain these results by a long-range Vlasov formalism.
Breather compactons in nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems
1999
We demonstrate the existence of a localized breathing mode with a compact support, i.e., a stationary breather compacton, in a nonlinear Klein-Gordon system. This breather compacton results from a delicate balance between the harmonicity of the substrate potential and the total nonlinearity induced by the substrate potential and the coupling forces between adjacent lattice sites.
