Interannual persistence effects in vegetation dynamics of semi-arid Africa

2005

[1] Over 15 years of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) are used to study the response of vegetation activity to rainfall in three semi-arid regions of Africa. The relationships between annual NDVI and annual precipitation (PPT) time series are examined using statistical approaches (simple and partial correlations, linear multiple regressions). It appears that annual NDVI highly depends on PPT of the concurrent year and the previous year. An analysis of particularly dry and wet years enables to better diagnose two distinct responses of vegetation activity to rainfall. The “recovery” effect represents the difficulty o…

Empirical determination of the average annual runoff coefficient in the Mediterranean area

2014

Runoff estimation in ungauged basin is a challenge for the hydrological engineers and planners. For an y hydrological study on an ungauged basin, a methodology has to be appropriately selected for the determination of runoff at its outlet. Several meth ods have been used to estimate the basin runoff production. In this study the empirical Kennessey m ethod to determine average annual runoff coefficien t, RC, is tested on 61 Sicilian basins characterized b y different climate conditions, surface permeabilit y, mean slope and vegetation cover. A comparison between observed and calculated RC showed that a calibration of the Kennessey model could be necessary. The slight and not satisfying impr…

Testing the Outflow Process over a Triangular Labyrinth Weir

2017

In this paper, the dimensionless stage-discharge relation for a sharp-crested triangular labyrinth weir, determined in a previous study, is initially tested by some experimental runs carried out in a laboratory flume. According to this relationship, the flow magnification is affected by the length-magnification ratio and the head to one cycle width ratio. The measurements allowed to test the applicability of this dimensionless relation for different values of both the angle of the sidewall to the main flow direction and the weir height. Finally, the proposed dimensionless equation was also tested by using experimental measurements carried out for broad-crested triangular labyrinth weir.

Passive millimeter wave image classification with large scale Gaussian processes

2017

Passive Millimeter Wave Images (PMMWIs) are being increasingly used to identify and localize objects concealed under clothing. Taking into account the quality of these images and the unknown position, shape, and size of the hidden objects, large data sets are required to build successful classification/detection systems. Kernel methods, in particular Gaussian Processes (GPs), are sound, flexible, and popular techniques to address supervised learning problems. Unfortunately, their computational cost is known to be prohibitive for large scale applications. In this work, we present a novel approach to PMMWI classification based on the use of Gaussian Processes for large data sets. The proposed…

Geographical variation in pharmacological prescription

2009

Promoting rational drug administration in treatments is one of the most important issues in Public Health. Bayesian hierarchical models are a very useful tool for incorporating geographical information into the analysis of pharmacological prescription data. They allow the mapping of spatial components which express the trend of geographical variation. In addition, these models are able to deal with uncertainty in a sequential way through prior distributions on parameters and hyperparameters. Bayes' theorem combines all types of information and provides the posterior distribution which is computed through Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation methods. Simulated data for pharmacological …

New Internal-Charge-Transfer Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Chromophores Based on the Donor Ferrocenylpyrazole Moiety

2016

A series of new N-arylated ferrocenepyrazole structures, carrying different donor or acceptor substituents in the para position of the aryl ring, has been synthesized by the Chan-Lam cross-coupling reaction. The nonplanar geometric molecular structure of some of these chromophores together with their crystal packing was determined by X-ray diffraction, and the HOMO and LUMO energy levels were evaluated by electrochemical and optical measurements and by density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. By the investigation of solvent effects and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, the intense electronic absorption band around 270-310 nm was confirmed to be an internal-chargetransfer (…

Fuzzy Non-fragile H∞ Tracking Control for Flexible Air-breathing Hypersonic Vehicles

2012

Abstract This paper proposed a fuzzy non-fragile tracking control design method for flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicles (FAHVs). The T-S fuzzy set approach is applied to the modeling of the complex nonlinear dynamics of FAHVs, and a T-S fuzzy model is constructed, which can represent the nonlinear hypersonic vehicle system. Then, by considering the actuator controller coefficients uncertainties and disturbances, the fuzzy non-fragile H ∞ tracking problem for FAHVs is proposed. A state-feedback controller design method is proposed to guarantee the tracking performance in the presence of actuator controller coefficients uncertainties. By a Lyapunov approach, the existence conditions fo…

Reference tracking control of hypersonic vehicles using switched linear parameter-varying approach

2013

This paper is concerned with the control problem of the air-breathing hypersonic vehicle using switched linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems approach. By linearizing the nonlinear model of the hypersonic vehicle at trim points and dividing the velocity scope into several partitions, a switched LPV model for the underlying systems is derived. With aid of multiple Lyapunov-like functions technique, the controllers ensuring the tracking of given commands of the closed-loop system are designed under the mode-independent and mode-dependent switching logics, respectively. Simulation results for the hypersonic vehicle show the effectiveness of the proposed method and the advantages of the mode-d…

Hyperspectral LCTF-based system for classification of decay in mandarins caused by Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium italicum using the most rele…

2013

[EN] Green mold (Penicillium digitatum) and blue mold (Penicillium italicum) are important sources of postharvest decay affecting the commercialization of mandarins. These fungi infections produce enormous economic losses in mandarin production if early detection is not carried out. Nowadays, this detection is performed manually in dark chambers, where the fruit is illuminated by ultraviolet light to produce fluorescence, which is potentially dangerous for humans. This paper documents a new methodology based on hyperspectral imaging and advanced machine-learning techniques (artificial neural networks and classification and regression trees) for the segmentation and classification of images …

An ab initio study of the unimolecular decomposition mechanism of formamidine. 4-31G Characterization of potential energy hypersurface

1991

Ab initio MO calculations have been carried out for the unimolecular decomposition of formamidine. The Hartree–Fock method in LCAO approximation with the 4-31G basis set was used. The 4-31G potential hypersurface has been further studied. The stationary points (R, TS, and P) were localized. A reaction analysis by correlation of bond-order indices and localized molecular orbitals demonstrated that the decomposition is an asynchronous process. The TS can be described as four-membered ring.
