Some diffusion equations with finite propagation speed
2007
We summarize some of our recent results on diffusion equations with finite speed of propagation. These equations have been introduced to correct the infinite speed of propagation predicted by the classical linear diffusion theory. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
Design optimization for the quench protection of DTT's superconducting toroidal field magnets
2021
Abstract The paper is focused on the optimal design of Fast Discharge Unit (FDU) for the quench protection of the Toroidal Field (TF) magnets of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT), an experimental facility under construction in ENEA Frascati Research Centre (Rome, Italy). The FDU is a safety key component that protects the superconducting magnets when a quench is detected through the fast extraction of the energy stored in the magnets by adding a discharge dump resistor (DR) in the TF magnets circuit. A comparison between a fixed DR and a switched variable DR has been implemented by changing resistor parameters and by using multiple current control of the power electronics components …
High Performance Liquid Chromatografy-Mass Spectrometry based chemometric characterization of olive oils
2005
In this study the effective discrimination of extra virgin olive oils is described using HPLC-MS, combined with chemometric evaluation. The presented method is simple since the diluted oil sample is directly injected into the system, without any preliminary chemical derivatization or purification step. Separation of diacylglycerols, triacylglycerols and sterols occurs within 20 min and is achieved using an octadecyl-silica column. Detection is performed by positive APCI mass spectrometry which provided sensitivity to detect over 50 compounds in the sample. After extraction of data, stepwise discriminant function analysis is used to select the variables with the highest discriminative power.…
Linear dynamics induced by odometers
2022
Weighted shifts are an important concrete class of operators in linear dynamics. In particular, they are an essential tool in distinguishing variety dynamical properties. Recently, a systematic study of dynamical properties of composition operators on $L^p$ spaces has been initiated. This class of operators includes weighted shifts and also allows flexibility in construction of other concrete examples. In this article, we study one such concrete class of operators, namely composition operators induced by measures on odometers. In particular, we study measures on odometers which induce mixing and transitive linear operators on $L^p$ spaces.
Functional Definition of a B Cell Epitope, KGEQGEPGA, on C1q the Fc-Binding Subunit of the First Component of Complement
1999
A synthetic peptide representing the C1q epitope KGEQGEPGA has been shown to suppress or delay the onset of CII-induced arthritis when applied intravenously (i.v.) prior to an intradermal (i.d.) challenge, in a mouse model; the phenomenon being associated with the development of immunoglobulin (Ig)M antibodies specific for the KGEQGEPGA epitope. Here we show that this amino acid sequence provides an immunodominant B cell epitope that is recognised by autoantibodies present in the sera of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis, two diseases associated with an immune response to C1q. The peptide's ability to produce pept…
Effective Linear Friction Welding Machine Redesign through Process Analysis
2014
Linear friction welding is a solid-state joining process developed for non-axisymmetric components in which the joining of the specimens is obtained through reciprocating motion and pressure. In the process, the friction forces work due to the high frequency oscillation and the pressure between the specimens is converted in thermal energy. In order to design an effective machine, relevant issues derive from the high frequency and the large inertial forces involved in the process. In this study, the authors describe the redesign of a preexisting prototypal machine for LFW processes. A machine redesign is needed when welding high resistant materials, i.e. steels or titanium alloys, with high …
Estimation of the energy producibility of an offshore wave energy converter
2022
Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world. Each year that passes the atmosphere warms up and the climate changes with possible catastrophic consequences for all living species. It is therefore necessary to implement a decisive change of course in terms of energy and environmental strategies at a global level, gradually abandoning the use of fossil sources in favor of renewable ones. A lot of country participates to European or global energy treaties or pacts to reduce step by step their fossil energy consumption and greenhouse gas. Among all renewable energies, the engineering department of the University of Palermo focuses the exploitati…
Small-angle x-ray scattering experiments for investigating the validity of the two-phase model
1973
A New method for evaluating SAXS curves of polymer samples with lamellar structure is applied to two typical scattering curves measured with a solution-crystallized linear polyethylene and a melt-crystallized branched polyethylene respectively. The method permits a rigorous check of the validity of the two-phase model and yields, without additional measurement, the volume fractions of the two phases and the difference in their densities. The densities can than be obtained by measuring the overall density of the sample. The results are: ρc = 0.996 g/cm3,ρa = 0.854 g/cm3, wa = 0.20 for the solution-crystallized sample; ρc = 0.967 g/cm3,ρa = 0.850 g/cm3, wa = 0.36 for the melt-crystallized sam…
Design criteria of tubular linear induction motors and generators: A prototype realization and its characterization
2013
In this paper a mathematical model of tubular linear induction machines (TLIM) with hollowed induced part is recalled. Moreover the design criteria of a TLIM with hollowed iron induced part are presented as well as the technological processes to be adopted and the choice of materials to construct the various parts. The methodologies for mechanical assembling and electric wiring are considered too. A prototype with bimetallic induced part has been designed and built. Finally some experimental results on electrical and mechanical variables, when the machines are used as motors, are shown.
On semi-fredholm properties of a boundary value problem inR + n
1988
The paper considers a boundary value problem with the help of the smallest closed extensionL ∼ :H k →H k 0×B h 1×...×B h N of a linear operatorL :C (0) ∞ (R + n ) →L(R + n )×L(R n−1)×...×L(R n−1). Here the spacesH k (the spaces ℬ h ) are appropriate subspaces ofD′(R + n ) (ofD′(R n−1), resp.),L(R + n ) andC (0) ∞ (R + n )) denotes the linear space of smooth functionsR n →C, which are restrictions onR + n of a function from the Schwartz classL (fromC 0 ∞ , resp.),L(R n−1) is the Schwartz class of functionsR n−1 →C andL is constructed by pseudo-differential operators. Criteria for the closedness of the rangeR(L ∼) and for the uniqueness of solutionsL ∼ U=F are expressed. In addition, ana prio…
