Confinement effects for ionic carriers in SrTiO3 ultrathin films: first-principles calculations of oxygen vacancies.

2010

One-dimensional confinement effects are modelled within the hybrid HF-DFT LCAO approach considering neutral and single-charged oxygen vacancies in SrTiO(3) ultrathin films. The calculations reveal that confinement effects are surprisingly short-range in this partly covalent perovskite; already for film thickness of 2-3 nm (and we believe, similar size nanoparticles) only the surface-plane defect properties differ from those in the bulk. This includes a pronounced decrease of the defect formation energy (by ∼1 eV), a much deeper defect band level and a noticeable change in the electronic density redistribution at the near-surface vacancy site with respect to that in the bulk. The results als…

Harmonic emission at microwave frequencies in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals near Tc

1998

Abstract Nonlinear microwave emission by YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 single crystals is investigated at temperatures close to T c . Second- and third-harmonic signals are studied as a function of the temperature and input power, for different values of the external magnetic field. The results are discussed in the framework of a phenomenological theory based on the two-fluid model which assumes that both the microwave and static fields perturb the partial concentrations of the normal and condensate fluids. It is suggested that, at temperatures very close to T c , this mechanism is the only one responsible for the harmonic emission by YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 single crystals in the Meissner state. It is also effect…

Two-color holographic-grating formation in amorphous As_2S_3 films

1998

A detailed experimental study of the holographic gratings recorded in nonannealed amorphous As2S3 films by 514.5-nm light in the presence of 632.8-nm readout light is carried out. A strong influence of a continuous 632.8-nm readout is found. The dependences of the maximal first-order diffraction efficiency and the corresponding specific recording energy on the holographic grating period were studied in a wide range of periods from 0.40 to 70.0 μm for 2-yr-old films. The obtained results are discussed in terms of photoinduced structural changes, relaxational structural changes, photoinduced anisotropy, and photoinduced recharging of the localized states in the bandgap. The photoinduced sulph…

<title>Effects of light polarization and crystal orientation on the holographic recording efficiency in doped LiNbO<formula><inf>&l…

2008

The holographic recording efficiency in doped LiNbO3 crystals has been studied both experimentally and theoretically depending on the type of dope, on the recording geometry and on the polarizations of the recording and readout light.. The studied crystals can be arranged in the following order by their efficiency: LiNbO3:Cu, LiNbO3:Fe (yet having a smaller thickness and donor concentration than LiNbO3:Cu), LiNbO3:Fe+Cu, LiNbO3:Fe+Ti, LiNbO3:Ti. It was found that the recording geometry with the holographic grating vector along the optical axis is much more efficient than in the perpendicular configuration. This fact is in accordance with the photorefraction theory based on photogalvanic and …

Hydrogen adsorption on the ZnO $(1\bar{1}00)$ surface: ab initio hybrid density functional linear combination of atomic orbitals calculations

2014

Hydrogen atoms unavoidably presented in ZnO samples or thin films during their synthesis considerably affect electrical conductivity. Results of first principles hybrid functional linear combination of atomic orbitals calculations are discussed for hydrogen atoms incorporated in bulk or adsorbed upon non-polar ZnO (1¯ 100) surfaces. The energy of H incorporation, atomic relaxation, electronic density redistribution and modification of the electronic structure are compared for both surface adsorption and bulk absorption. It is shown that hydrogen forms a strong bonding with the surface O ions (Eads = 2.7eV) whereas its incorporation into bulk is energetically quite unfavorable. Hydrogen adso…

Characterization of Non-linear Inductors Including Thermal Effects for Power Applications

2018

This paper is focused on the behaviour of non-linear inductors employed in DC/DC switching converters considering the effects due to variations of both current and temperature. The characterization of the inductors is performed by a buck converter operated to stimulate the inductor under test by a constant current with superimposed a large signal. The measurements are carried out at several inductor’s temperature values. Data are automatically collected by a novel virtual instrument developed by the authors in LabVIEW® environment aiming to obtain a polynomial based analytical model. The deep knowledge of the inductor model allows its design to be optimized improving the power density of th…

Two-wave mixing at 854 nm in BaTiO3:Rh planar waveguide implanted with He+

2001

Abstract Guided waves at 854 nm are observed in a BaTiO 3 :Rh waveguide fabricated by the technique of ion-beam implantation. The photorefractive interaction between two guided modes is demonstrated and characterized. The experiments reveal that the gain direction is reversed in the guiding layer in comparison with that in the bulk. A maximum gain of 24 cm −1 is achieved.

Filamentation-induced spectral broadening and pulse shortening of infrared pulses in Tellurite glass

2016

Abstract Filamentation of infrared femtosecond pulses in Tellurite glass is reported, leading to the generation of a supercontinuum generation spanning from the visible up to 4 μm. The angular distribution of the supercontinuum shows clear evidence of conical waves generation, in particular, in the visible region. Moreover, taking advantage of the spatio-temporal self-focusing effect occurring in the Tellurite glass, a twofold pulse shortening is demonstrated. Tellurite glass appears as a very convenient, versatile and promising medium for femtosecond nonlinear optics in the infrared region.

Dispersion-optimized multicladding silicon nitride waveguides for nonlinear frequency generation from ultraviolet to mid-infrared

2016

Nonlinear frequency conversion spanning from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared (beyond 2.4 μm) is experimentally demonstrated in multicladding silicon nitride (𝑆𝑖𝑋𝑁𝑌) waveguides. By adjusting the waveguide cross-section the chromatic dispersion is flattened, which enhances both the efficiency and the bandwidth of the nonlinear conversion. How accurately the dispersion is tailored is assessed through chromatic dispersion measurements and an experiment/simulation comparison of the dispersive waves' wavelength locations. Undesirable fluctuations of both the refractive index and the dimensions of the waveguide during the fabrication process result in a dispersion unpredictability of at l…

Modelling intergranular and transgranular micro-cracking in polycrystalline materials

2018

Abstract In this work, a grain boundary formulation for intergranular and transgranular micro-cracking in three-dimensional polycrystalline aggregates is presented. The formulation is based on the displacement and stress boundary integral equations of solid mechanics and it has the advantage of expressing the polycrystalline problem in terms of grain boundary variables only. The individual grains within the polycrystalline morphology are modelled as generally anisotropic linear elastic domains with random spatial orientation. Transgranular micro-cracking is assumed to occur along specific cleavage planes, whose orientation in space within the grains depend upon the crystallographic lattice.…
