Subparsec Polarimetric Radio Observations of 3C 120: A Close‐up Look at Superluminal Motion

1998

We present two-epoch polarimetric images of the radio galaxy 3C 120 obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 22 and 43 GHz. Because of the proximity of 3C 120 (z = 0.033), the 43 GHz observations allow us to observe superluminal motions with the highest resolution achieved to date, 0.07 h-1 pc. Up to ten different superluminal components, with velocities between 2.3 and 5.4 h-1c, can be observed in this active source, with approximately monthly ejections of new components. Polarization is observed in several components and at both frequencies, with peaks in the linearly polarized flux not always coincident with the peaks in total intensity. The orientation of the magnetic field is obse…

Noise-induced effects in nonlinear relaxation of condensed matter systems

2015

Abstract Noise-induced phenomena characterise the nonlinear relaxation of nonequilibrium physical systems towards equilibrium states. Often, this relaxation process proceeds through metastable states and the noise can give rise to resonant phenomena with an enhancement of lifetime of these states or some coherent state of the condensed matter system considered. In this paper three noise induced phenomena, namely the noise enhanced stability, the stochastic resonant activation and the noise-induced coherence of electron spin, are reviewed in the nonlinear relaxation dynamics of three different systems of condensed matter: (i) a long-overlap Josephson junction (JJ) subject to thermal fluctuat…

Effects of Lévy noise on the dynamics of sine-Gordon solitons in long Josephson junctions

2015

We numerically investigate the generation of solitons in current-biased long Josephson junctions in relation to the superconducting lifetime and the voltage drop across the device. The dynamics of the junction is modelled with a sine-Gordon equation driven by an oscillating field and subject to an external non-Gaussian noise. A wide range of $\alpha$-stable L\'evy distributions is considered as noise source, with varying stability index $\alpha$ and asymmetry parameter $\beta$. In junctions longer than a critical length, the mean switching time (MST) from superconductive to the resistive state assumes a values independent of the device length. Here, we demonstrate that such a value is direc…

Observation of collapse arrest in pure kerr media sustained by a parametric interaction

2013

We demonstrate a parametric interaction based on four wave mixing that can arrest the collapse and stabilize solitary propagation in a pure Kerr material by controlling the wavelength of the interacting beams.

Laser-induced field-free alignment of the OCS molecule

2007

We investigate the dynamical alignment of jet-cooled OCS molecules induced by a short laser pulse. The alignment is measured through the orientational contribution of the optical Kerr effect using a second weak laser pulse as a probe. Maximum alignment is observed at conditions close to saturation of ionization. The results are analysed with a quantum mechanical model solving for the rotational dynamics.

Incoherent modulation instability in instantaneous nonlinear Kerr media

2005

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally in an optical fiber system that partially temporally incoherent light exhibits modulational instability during its propagation in an instantaneous response nonlinear medium. We show that the modulation frequency and gain are substantially increased with respect to the corresponding values of coherent modulational instability.

Switching Dynamics of Dark Solitons in Kerr Microresonators

2019

Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKS) are localized structures in optical resonators that arise from a double balance between dispersion and Kerr effect, and linear loss and parametric gain [1]. The periodic nature of DKS corresponds to frequency combs. DKS can be generated in high-Q microresonators for diverse applications, from coherent communications to precision frequency synthesis [1]. Most studies of DKS have focused on microresonator cavities operating in the anomalous dispersion regime, where the waveforms correspond to bright soliton pulses. Coherent microresonator combs can also be formed in the normal dispersion regime [2]. The time-domain waveform corresponds to a localized dark-pulse…

Kerr effect as a tool for the investigation of dynamic heterogeneities

2006

We propose a dynamic Kerr effect experiment for the distinction between dynamic heterogeneous and homogeneous relaxation in glassy systems. The possibility of this distinction is due to the inherent nonlinearity of the Kerr effect signal. We model the slow reorientational molecular motion in supercooled liquids in terms of non-inertial rotational diffusion. The Kerr effect response, consisting of two terms, is calculated for heterogeneous and for homogeneous variants of the stochastic model. It turns out that the experiment is able to distinguish between the two scenarios. We furthermore show that exchange between relatively 'slow' and 'fast' environments does not affect the possibility of …

Counter-propagating difference-frequency generation in diamond with terahertz fields

2013

The nonlinear interaction of terahertz (THz) pulses with optical fields in Kerr, gaseous media is a key ingredient for broadband THz detection schemes [1]. Terahertz field-induced second harmonic generation in solid-state media has also been considered for THz detection and as a tool e.g. for liquid dynamics investigations [2,3], while four-wave mixing has been addressed as a possible mechanism for THz generation [4,5]. © 2013 IEEE.

Vectorial Kerr-cavity solitons.

2000

It is shown that a Kerr cavity with different losses for the two polarization components of the field can support both dark and bright cavity solitons (CS’s). A parametrically driven Ginzburg–Landau equation is shown to describe the system for large-cavity anisotropy. In one transverse dimension the nonlinear dynamics of the bright CS’s is numerically investigated.
