Discrimination of LINAC photon and sunlight contributions in watch glass analyzed by means of thermoluminescence

Abstract The research described in this paper shows how to extract from the glow curves of watch glasses exposed to LINAC photons and sunlight a contribution sensitive to LINAC photons dose. As first step, the dependence of the TL signal due to sunlight on the exposure duration was studied and a signal saturation was observed after about 20 weeks. The comparison of TL signals due to solar light and to LINAC photons highlights a partial overlap of the two signals. Abstract Laser spectroscopy experiments at radioactive ion beam facilities around the world investigate properties of exotic nuclei for scientific endeavours such as, but not limited to, the investigation of nuclear structure. High brilliance uranium beams for the GSI FAIR

The 40 years old GSI-UNILAC (Universal Linear Accelerator) as well as the heavy ion synchrotron SIS18 will serve as a high current heavy ion injector for the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) synchrotron SIS100. In the context of an advanced machine investigation program in combination with the ongoing UNILAC upgrade program, a new uranium beam intensity record (11.5 emA, ${\mathrm{U}}^{29+}$) at very high beam brilliance was achieved recently in a machine experiment campaign. Accelerated radioactive beams from REX-ISOLDE

In 2001 the linear accelerator of the Radioactive beam EXperiment (REX-ISOLDE) delivered for the first time accelerated radioactive ion beams, at a beam energy of 2 MeV/u. REX-ISOLDE uses the method of charge-state breeding, in order to enhance the charge state of the ions before injection into the LINAC. Radioactive singly-charged ions from the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge bred to an A/q < 4.5 in an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and finally accelerated in a LINAC from 5 keV/u to energies between 0.8 and 2.2 MeV/u. A source of polarized electrons based on photoemission of GaAsP.

Abstract The source described is based on photoemission of electrons from 100-GaAs0.62P0.38 activated to negative electron affinity. It is built to inject a beam of polarized electrons into the 350 MeV linear accelerator in Mainz. It is capable of delivering a mean current of 28 μA spin-polarized longitudinally to a degree of 0.44. The lifetime of the cathode under operational conditions is better than 200 h. The source was successfully run in a parity experiment, in which the analysing power of quasielastic scattering from beryllium for longitudinally polarized electrons was measured.

On the variational approach to Jastrow correlations in nuclei

The variational equation determining the Jastrow correlation function is investigated with particular emphasis on the healing problem for both nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The consequences of several healing conditions are discussed. Furthermore, influences from the choice of the single particle basis and from long range correlations are studied and are found to be small in the short range region.

Bunching and cooling of radioactive ions with REXTRAP

The properties of radioactive ion beams produced by the present on-line target ion source technology are often not suitable for direct post acceleration. For that purpose pulsed and cooled beams of higher charged ions are required. In the case of REX-ISOLDE, the post accelerator at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive beam facility, a unique system for beam preparation is used. It consists of a gas-filled cylindrical Penning trap (REXTRAP) for bunching and cooling followed by an electron beam ion source for charge state breeding. Charged Higgs mass bounds from b → sγ in a bilinear R-parity violating model

1998

The experimental measurement of $B(b \to s\gamma)$ imposes important constraints on the charged Higgs boson mass in the MSSM. If squarks are in the few TeV range, the charged Higgs boson mass in the MSSM must satisfy $m_{H^{\pm}} \gsim 440$ GeV. For lighter squarks, then light charged Higgs bosons can be reconciled with $B(b \to s\gamma)$ only if there is also a light chargino. In the MSSM if we impose $m_{\chi^{\pm}_1}>90$ GeV then we need $m_{H^{\pm}} \gsim 110$ GeV. We show that by adding bilinear R--Parity violation (BRpV) in the tau sector, these bounds are relaxed. The bound on $m_{H^{\pm}}$ in the MSSM--BRpV model is $\gsim 340$ GeV for the the heavy squark case and $m_{H^{\pm}} \gsi…

Performance of the ATLAS Hadronic End-Cap Calorimeter in Beam Tests

Abstract Modules of the ATLAS liquid argon Hadronic End-cap Calorimeter (HEC) were exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6⩽ E ⩽200 GeV at the CERN SPS. A description of the HEC and of the beam test setup are given. Results on the energy response and resolution are presented and compared with simulations. The ATLAS energy resolution for jets in the end-cap region is inferred and meets the ATLAS requirements.

Study of meson production in nuclei near threshold

We present a study of the η production at low energies in pd collision with 3He and pd nuclear systems in the final state. The η production mechanism is described by a two-step model and the final state interactions are included fully. The η - d and η - 3He final state interactions are incorporated through the solution of the Lippmann Schwinger equation for a half off-shell η - AT-matrix. For η - d this t -matrix is written in a factorized form, with an off-shell form factor multiplying an on-shell part having the scattering length representation.
