The Multi-period Multi-trip Container Drayage Problem with Release and Due Dates

2021

Abstract The Container Drayage Problem (CDP) aims at routing a fleet of trucks, based at a common terminal, to serve customers while minimizing the total travel distance. Each trip starts from and ends at the terminal, and handles a subset of customers. Each customer requires either that a container is picked up or delivered. We introduce a more realistic variant, i.e., the Multi-trip Multi-period CDP with Release and Due Dates (MM-CDP-RDD), in which the planning horizon is composed of several periods (days). On each day, each truck may perform more than one trip respecting the Release and Due Dates (RDD) associated with customer services, corresponding to the first and the last day on whic…

Singular Neumann (p, q)-equations

2019

We consider a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by the sum of a p-Laplacian and of a q-Laplacian and exhibiting in the reaction the competing effects of a singular term and of a resonant term. Using variational methods together with suitable truncation and comparison techniques, we show that for small values of the parameter the problem has at least two positive smooth solutions.

Multiple solutions for (p,2)-equations at resonance

2019

We consider a nonlinear nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem driven by the sum of a p-Laplacian and a Laplacian and a reaction term which is (p− 1)-linear near ±∞ and resonant with respect to any nonprincipal variational eigenvalue of (−∆p, W01,p(Ω)). Using variational tools together with truncation and comparison techniques and Morse Theory (critical groups), we establish the existence of six nontrivial smooth solutions. For five of them we provide sign information and order them.

Modeling multiple taxis: Tumor invasion with phenotypic heterogeneity, haptotaxis, and unilateral interspecies repellence

2021

We provide a short review of existing models with multiple taxis performed by (at least) one species and consider a new mathematical model for tumor invasion featuring two mutually exclusive cell phenotypes (migrating and proliferating). The migrating cells perform nonlinear diffusion and two types of taxis in response to non-diffusing cues: away from proliferating cells and up the gradient of surrounding tissue. Transitions between the two cell subpopulations are influenced by subcellular (receptor binding) dynamics, thus conferring the setting a multiscale character. We prove global existence of weak solutions to a simplified model version and perform numerical simulations for the full se…

The predictive power of power-laws: An empirical time-arrow based investigation

2022

The efficient market hypothesis forbids any predictability towards future, but there is no such restriction in the case of reversed-looking approaches. We analyze if this asymmetry in non-predictability is reflected in the statistical features of financial time series. Our study is based on the analysis of the length-distribution of periods with high variability, and introduces time-asymmetric modifications of the method which are capable of revealing differences of the time series in forward and reversed time. We show that the future and reversed-looking time-series possess very similar properties, with some features being distinguishable with our method. Our findings give also evidence of…

Seismic Behavior of Lisbon Mixed Masonry-RC Buildings With Historical Value: A Contribution for the Practical Assessment

2018

The fact that linear analysis is still the most used procedure in the design engineering offices, studies which addresses issues associated to the estimation of the structural behavior factor values are relevant. In this study, the behavior factor of a particular type of mixed masonry-reinforced concrete buildings in Lisbon is estimated. The typology chosen in this study represents 30% of building stock in Lisbon; these buildings were built between 1930 and 1960 and thus were designed without considering the seismic-design requirements proposed in current codes. The evaluation of the behavior factors was based on the use of nonlinear static analyses, performed in the form of the sensitivity…

Factorization of strongly (p,sigma)-continuous multilinear operators

2013

We introduce the new ideal of strongly-continuous linear operators in order to study the adjoints of the -absolutely continuous linear operators. Starting from this ideal we build a new multi-ideal by using the composition method. We prove the corresponding Pietsch domination theorem and we present a representation of this multi-ideal by a tensor norm. A factorization theorem characterizing the corresponding multi-ideal - which is also new for the linear case - is given. When applied to the case of the Cohen strongly -summing operators, this result gives also a new factorization theorem.

Bicommutants of reduced unbounded operator algebras

2009

The unbounded bicommutant $(\mathfrak M_{E'})''$ of the {\em reduction} of an O*-algebra $\MM$ via a given projection $E'$ weakly commuting with $\mathfrak M$ is studied, with the aim of finding conditions under which the reduction of a GW*-algebra is a GW*-algebra itself. The obtained results are applied to the problem of the existence of conditional expectations on O*-algebras.

Riesz-like bases in rigged Hilbert spaces

2015

The notions of Bessel sequence, Riesz-Fischer sequence and Riesz basis are generalized to a rigged Hilbert space $\D[t] \subset \H \subset \D^\times[t^\times]$. A Riesz-like basis, in particular, is obtained by considering a sequence $\{\xi_n\}\subset \D$ which is mapped by a one-to-one continuous operator $T:\D[t]\to\H[\|\cdot\|]$ into an orthonormal basis of the central Hilbert space $\H$ of the triplet. The operator $T$ is, in general, an unbounded operator in $\H$. If $T$ has a bounded inverse then the rigged Hilbert space is shown to be equivalent to a triplet of Hilbert spaces.
