Manuale di linguistica ladina

2020

This volume is the first comprehensive handbook on Ladin linguistics. Ladin ("ladino brissino-tirolese" in Italian) is a group of varieties belonging to Rhaeto-Romance and spoken in North-eastern Italy. The volume consists of 18 chapters divided into three sections: 1. history and description of the internal linguistic properties of the Ladin varieties; 2. sociolinguistics and normalisation processes of Ladin; 3. tools for documenting and studying the Ladin varieties. Since this is the first handbook entirely dedicated to this language group, it aims both at a description that covers all the traditional topics and at an overview of the most recent approaches to the study and the preservatio…

Epistemic uses of the pretérito pluscuamperfecto in La Paz Spanish

2020

This paper explores epistemic-evidential uses of the pluperfect, i.e. pretérito pluscuamperfecto, in La Paz Spanish. The pretérito pluscuamperfecto displays functions of a reported evidential form, conforming to results from previous studies on Argentinian Spanish (Bermúdez 2008; Speranza 2014) and, furthermore, is used according to a previously unnoticed inferential evidential function. Using theoretical frameworks from Kockelman (1957) and Bergqvist (2018), this paper describes the configuration of participant roles and event types implied in the different evidential functions of the pretérito pluscuamperfecto.

I composti nominali e aggettivali in The Ryme of the Ancient Mariner di S.T. Coleridge e nelle traduzioni italiane

2012

The Author examines the compounds in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and in the Italian translations by M. Luzi and B. Fenoglio, paying attention to the 3rd part of the poem about the skeleton-ship and the characters Death and Life-in-Death. The morphological analysis of English compounds shows the problems that the translators met in translating compounds and in interpreting verses written in a language where grammar gender is not expressed. Through this type of analysis we can infer and explain what was in the minds of the Poet and of his translators during their writing-process.

Irregularity in Latin: gender and inflexional classes

2012

The Author searches the Latin common nouns beginning with the letters from a- to i- in order to have a statistical datum of the frequency of grammatical genders and inflexional classes. Then, analysing the masculine nouns in –a and the feminine ones in –o, that appear exceptions to the normal trends of the gender assignment, she notices that the masculine in –a, which are complex words, constitute a productive class whereas the feminine in –o are weak and subject to change of gender and declensional class. Finally, she shows that compound or derivative words are more numerous than the simplex ones and concludes that the selection of gender is generally arbitrary but it often depends on the …

Morfologia e sintassi: questioni di confine ‘vecchie’ e ‘nuove’

2010

A Grammar of Central Trentino

2020

Central Trentino is a Romance dialect spoken in the North-East of Italy, which shows features belonging to both Gallo-Italic and Venetan dialects. Grammar of Central Trentino aims to present the first comprehensive grammatical description of this dialect, taking into consideration its morpho-syntactic properties and pragmatic phenomena. The book's general approach is synchronic and focused on the language currently in use. The authors discuss a wide range of examples gathered from both oral and written sources. The theoretical reference model is that of generative grammar, but the description of the phenomena is also accessible to a non-specialized audience.

Deissi spaziale e verbi di movimento in vedico

2016

This study is part of a broader research project on temporal and spatial deixis in the Proto-Indo-European language. Specifically, the aim of this paper is to investigate the basic motion verbs go and come in Vedic. The deictic component of PATH has often been considered as inherent to the lexical semantics of these verbs cross-linguistically. However, I will show that Vedic i “go”, gā “go; come; step” and gam “go; come” express a deictically-neutral meaning of ‘moving along a path’, which is not characterized with regard to both MANNER and PATH. Data suggest that these verbs can take on a deictic interpretation by cooccurring with specific particles, adverbs, demonstratives, and personal p…
