Guessing Meaning From Word Sounds of Unfamiliar Languages: A Cross-Cultural Sound Symbolism Study

2019

Sound symbolism refers to a non-arbitrary relationship between the sound of a word and its meaning. With the aim to better investigate this relationship by using natural languages, in the present cross-linguistic study 215 Italian and Polish participants were asked to listen to words pronounced in 4 unknown non-indo-European languages (Finnish, Japanese, Swahili, Tamil) and to try to guess the correct meaning of each word, by choosing among 3 alternatives visualized on a computer screen. The alternatives were presented in the mother tongue of participants. Three different word categories were presented: nouns, verbs and adjectives. A first overall analysis confirmed a semantic role of sound…

Does daily distress make parents prone to using psychologically controlling parenting?

2016

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether parental daily distress in terms of negative emotions is associated with the daily variation in parental use of psychological control with their children. Whether parental positive emotions play a role in the use of psychological control was also investigated. The participants were 149 Finnish families with a child between the ages of 6 and 7 years. Parents’ negative and positive emotions, children’s misconduct, and parental use of psychological control when interacting with their children were measured daily using diary questionnaires filled in by the mothers and fathers over 7 successive days in the fall term of the children’s first…

First World War Diaries: Making the Private Public

2020

This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.

'It's like a Sentence before the Sentence' - Exploring the Pains and Possibilities of Waiting for Imprisonment

2020

This article explores the implications of the ‘imprisonment queue’ in Norway. Based on interview data (N = 200), we show that while interviewees waiting to serve their sentences enjoy certain benefits such as being able to prepare for or negotiate the terms of their imprisonment, they also suffer from uncertainty and powerlessness. The suspension of their lives while they wait hinders them in pursuing their ground projects, things that really matter to them. This peculiar phenomenon has not received attention from prison scholars generally, as well as scholars writing on Nordic Exceptionalism specifically. This article addresses that gap and poses questions about the relative mildness of th…

Rédiger pour être publié ! 2e édition 2012

2012

Publish or perish. This saying clearly exemplifies that science communication is vital for scientists, research bodies and nation competitiveness. Nowadays both computers and internet have deeply changed the way scientific articles are written and published. In an editorial world moving at accelerated pace, scientists are eager to get their papers published in the best journals because impact factors are ruling careers and funding. Since fundings are provided by various public and private bodies, scientific papers should be partly understandable by a wide audience from journalists to entrepreneurs, political leaders and the general public. However, as an editor of scientific journals, I obs…

Differences between students' PISA reading literacy scores and grading for mother tongue and literature at school : A geostatistical analysis of the …

2016

In Finland, the national Core Curriculum for Basic Education defines the learning objectives along with the numerical grade to be given for good competence in each school subject in the final phase of basic education. While serving as a guideline for schools and teachers, it should also ensure an objective evaluation of all students in Finland. In this paper, we take a closer look at the equality of student assessment in Finland in the light of student performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009. This study investigates the relationship between the grades given to students in mother tongue and literature at different schools and the same students’ reading l…

Les non-publics de la culture. Une approche ethnographique de situations de réception demi-contraintes

2013

Photographic exhibitions are organized today "outdoor"; I study the "non-public" (Ancel & Pessin, 2004): the absents. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure? The article attempts to study the performances of culture that are forged by the respondents (migrants from the lower classes) during outings organized by community centers or municipal associations. To understand why photographic exhibitions fail to mobilize some, I observe in fact that the last prefer other cultural events. Using two case studies (a contemporary dance show, a play), I show that the contact of some actors with culture lead to misunderstandings or misconceptions that me…
