Detecting Hand-Head Occlusions in Sign Language Video

2013

A large body of current linguistic research on sign language is based on analyzing large corpora of video recordings. This requires either manual or automatic annotation of the videos. In this paper we introduce methods for automatically detecting and classifying hand-head occlusions in sign language videos. Linguistically, hand-head occlusions are an important and interesting subject of study as the head is a structural place of articulation in many signs. Our method combines easily calculable local video properties with more global hand tracking. The experiments carried out with videos of the Suvi on-line dictionary of Finnish Sign Language show that the sensitivity of the proposed local …

Anthropology and translation

2021

"The empirical study of the cognitive processes at work in various forms of translation makes it possible to leave aside the idealistic postulate of a universal grammar of human culture. The ontological problem, then, no longer refers to the different conceptions of the world expressed in different languages, but to the multiple non-systematic ways of constantly activating different forms of thought [...].

Bearing gods in mind and culture

2011

Abstract Where do supernatural agents come from and why do they stay around? Within the biocultural study of religion one finds a growing tendency to answer these questions by weaving together two conceptual threads, which I will refer to as anthropomorphic promiscuity and sociographic prudery. Although descriptions of these theogonic (god-bearing) mechanisms can differ significantly, the theoretical pattern can be recognized in authors from a variety of disciplines. I illustrate this pattern using four books published in 2010: David Lewis-Williams's Conceiving God: The Cognitive Origin and Evolution of Religion, Pascal Boyer's The Fracture of an Illusion: Science and the Dissolution of Rel…

Is the chromanol head group of vitamin E nature's final truth on chain-breaking antioxidants?

2012

AbstractTocopherol is believed to be the most potent naturally occurring chain-breaking antioxidant. Hence, its refined phenolic head group chromanol may represent an optimum evolutionary solution to the problem of free-radical chain reactions in the lipid bilayer. To test the universal validity of this assumption beyond phenolic head groups, we have synthesized aromatic amine analogues of vitamin E and trolox with otherwise closely matching physicochemical properties: NH-toc and NH-trox. We have found that NH-toc and NH-trox were significantly more potent free radical scavengers, lipid peroxidation inhibitors and cytoprotective agents than their phenolic templates, tocopherol and trolox. I…

La continuïtat «bioliterària» al País Valencià: de Carles Ros a Carles Salvador (o de Gregori Maians a Vicent Andrés Estellés, passant per Teodor Llo…

2015

Teacher's reflections on experimenting with technology-enriched inquiry-based mathematics teaching with a preplanned teaching unit

2013

Abstract According to previous studies, inquiry-based mathematics teaching enhances learning. However, teachers need support in implementing this type of teaching. In this study, a high school teacher was given a short preplanned inquiry-based mathematics teaching unit that included activities with GeoGebra. The teacher was interviewed after every lesson to explore her reflections after teaching. I analyzed how the teacher described the differences between her regular teaching style and the teaching unit and the pros and cons of the teaching unit. The teacher reflected on the roles of the teacher and students, depth of students’ knowledge, her stance toward the teaching unit, constraints fo…
