Pilot study on the combination of an organophosphate-based insecticide paint and pyrethroid-treated long lasting nets against pyrethroid resistant ma…
2015
International audience; A pilot study to test the efficacy of combining an organophosphate-based insecticide paint and pyrethroid-treated Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vector mosquitoes was performed in a real village setting in Burkina Faso. Paint Inesfly 5A IGR™, comprised of two organophosphates (OPs) and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), was tested in combination with pyrethroid-treated LLINs. Efficacy was assessed in terms of mortality for 12 months using Early Morning Collections of malaria vectors and 30-minute WHO bioassays. Resistance to pyrethroids and OPs was assessed by detecting the frequency of L1014F and L1014S kdr mutation…
Insulin degludec and insulin glargine 300 U/mL: Which of these two insulins causes less hypoglycemia?
2019
The interesting article by Yamabe et al.1 showed, using continuous glucose monitoring, that insulin degludec (I‐Deg) was associated with a high percentage of time with nocturnal hypoglycemia than with insulin glargine 300 U/mL (I‐G300; P = 0.02). However, we observe that some possible confounding factors might have influenced the results, such as differences in concomitant medications, use of the same titration protocol for both kinds of insulin or differences in glucose levels. This is also a recurrent problem in clinical trials, which sometime produce conflicting results. In fact, the study of Yamabe et al. is partly in agreement with some recently published clinical trials that gave diff…
Internalization of Echovirus 1 in Caveolae
2002
ABSTRACT Echovirus 1 (EV1) is a human pathogen which belongs to the Picornaviridae family of RNA viruses. We have analyzed the early events of infection after EV1 binding to its receptor α2β1 integrin and elucidated the route by which EV1 gains access to the host cell. EV1 binding onto the cell surface and subsequent entry resulted in conformational changes of the viral capsid as demonstrated by sucrose gradient sedimentation analysis. After 15 min to 2 h postinfection (p.i.) EV1 capsid proteins were seen in vesicular structures that were negative for markers of the clathrin-dependent endocytic pathway. In contrast, immunofluorescence confocal microscopy showed that EV1, α2β1 integrin, and …
Increased gene expression of a cytokine-related molecule and profilin after activation of Suberites domuncula cells with xenogeneic sponge molecule(s)
2000
Porifera (sponges) constitute the lowest metazoan phylum, Experiments examined whether sponges can recognize self/nonself molecules. Cells from the marine sponge Suberites domuncula were incubated with membranes from either S. domuncula or another marine sponge, Geodia cydonium, as well as with recombinant alpha-integrin from G. cydonium. The cells responded immediately with a rise of intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca-i(2+)]) if they were treated with membranes from G. cydonium but not after treatment by those from S. domuncula. This change of [Ca-i(2+)] was also recorded with G. cydonium alpha-integrin. In parallel, the expression of two genes was strongly upregulated; one codes for a cytokine-relat…
Inhibition of Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity by Cucurbitacin R through the Curbing of Lymphocyte Proliferation and Cytokine Expression by Means of Nuc…
2009
Cucurbitacin R is known to exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect in different experimental models of inflammation. In this article, we outline the effect of cucurbitacin R on T lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine production, and nuclear factor activation, as well as its influence on various experimental models of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice. Cucurbitacin R reduced the proliferation of phytohemagglutinin A-stimulated human T lymphocytes (IC(50), 18 microM), modifying the cell cycle, as well as the production of cytokines [interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10, and especially interferon-gamma] and the induction of the principal cyclins implicated in the cell cycle (A(1), B(1), D(2), an…
Intestinal Involvement in Kawasaki Disease
2018
Objectives To describe a case of Kawasaki disease with intestinal involvement and to analyze other published reports to define clinical characteristics, diagnostic issues, and therapeutic approaches of gastrointestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease. Study design A computerized search without language restriction was conducted using PubMed and SCOPUS. An article was considered eligible for inclusion in the systematic review if it reported data on patient(s) with intestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease. Our case was also included in the analysis. Results Thirty-three articles reporting 48 cases of Kawasaki disease with intestinal involvement were considered. Fever, abdominal pain, and vo…
Child behaviour and adult personality: comparisons between criminality groups in Finland and Sweden
2000
Background; Lately there has been an increasing interest in whether personality traits are associated with criminal behaviour in male and female subjects. Criminality and alcohol abuse are often associated. Delinquent adolescents are impulsive and danger seeking. Childhood aggression may be a precursor of adult criminality. Method Using longitudinal data, adult personality and childhood behaviours were examined for groups of non-criminals and criminals of Finnish (n = 268) and Swedish (n + 169) samples, and crime groups were compared in the two cultures. Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) were given at adult age and the participants had been observed and rated by their teachers in respe…
