Echinostoma caproni: kinetics of IgM, IgA and IgG subclasses in the serum and intestine of experimentally infected rats and mice.
2007
The kinetics of specific immunoglobulin M, A and IgG subclasses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) were analyzed in serum and intestinal fluid of two host species (Wistar rats and ICR mice) in which the course of the infection markedly differs. In rats, the worms were rapidly expelled, whereas E. caproni evokes in mice long-lasting infection. The pattern of antibody responses in both serum and intestinal samples was different in each host species. Serum responses in mice were characterized by significant increases of IgM, IgA, total IgG, IgG1 and IgG3, but not IgG2a. In contrast, serum responses in rats showed elevated levels of IgM, probably in relation to thymus-ind…
A study of serum immunoglobulin levels in elderly persons that provides new insights into B cell immunosenescence.
2007
The literature on immunosenescence has focused mainly on T cell impairment. With the aim of gaining insight into B cell immunosenescence, we investigated the serum immunoglobulin levels in a cohort of 166 subjects (20-106 years). Serum IgG (and IgG subclasses) were quantified by the nephelometric technique, IgE by CAP system fluorescence enzyme immunoassay, and IgD by radial immunodiffusion (RID). There was an age-related increase of IgG and IgA; the IgG age-related increase was significant only in men, but IgG1 levels showed an age-related increase both in men and women, whereas IgG3 showed an age-related increase only in men. IgE levels remain unchanged, whereas IgD and IgM serum levels d…
The effect of RAAS blockade on markers of renal tubular damage in diabetic nephropathy: u-NGAL, u-KIM1 and u-LFABP.
2012
Blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) affects both the glomerulus and tubules. We aimed to investigate the effect of irbesartan on the tubular markers: urinary (u) neutrophil gelatinase associated protein (NGAL), Kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM1) and liver-fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP).A substudy of a double-masked, randomized, cross-over study including 52 patients with type 2 diabetes, hypertension and microalbuminuria. After 2 months washout of all antihypertensive medication except bendroflumethiazid, patients were treated in random order with irbesartan 300, 600 and 900 mg for 2 months.Urinary tubular markers at baseline and after each treatment period (ELISA),…
Differences in the composition of inflammatory cell infiltrate in lens-induced uveitis under therapy with allopurinol or steroids.
2001
Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the qualitative changes in the composition of inflammatory cell infiltrate in lens-induced uveitis (LIU) under treatment with allopurinol (Allo), methylprednisolone (Pred) or the two drugs combined (Allo/Pred). Methods Twenty male Wistar rats were sensitized with lens proteins for eight weeks. Intravenous (IV) therapy was started after anterior capsule disruption in one eye of each animal. Five rats were randomly assigned to each of the four groups: controls, Allo (50 mg/kg bw), Pred (7.5 mg/kg bw) and Allo/Pred (50 mg/7.5 mg per kg bw). Eyes were enucleated 24 hours later and fixed in paraformaldehyde/glutaraldehyde. Sections at three levels wer…
Does plasma endothelin during thrombolysis depend on infarct size? A pilot study
1995
Dear Sir, Endothelin is a recently discovered endotheliumderived vasoconstrictive peptide [1]. Endothelin's actions are altered in various models of cardiac injury [2]. Furthermore, it has been shown that endothelin is increased during reperfusion [2]. Studies have shown a significant increase in endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the early phases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) [3-8]. In addition, a significant inverse relation between ventricular function and plasma ET-1 has been shown [6]. These data suggest that ET-1 may provide a marker of endothelial injury in the early phases of coronary ischemia or may even contribute to alterations…
Rheopheresis in Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia--Results of an Open Label Prospective Pilot Trial
2005
Rheopheresis is a specifically designed application of double filtration plasmapheresis, for extracorporeal treatment of microcirculatory disorders. Safety and efficacy of Rheopheresis for wound healing and skin oxygenation were investigated in patients with critical limb ischemia. Twelve patients of Fontaine stage III-IV were treated with a series of 10 Rheopheresis sessions over 17 weeks. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (tcpO(2)) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were repeatedly determined to monitor the effects of the Rheopheresis treatment series on microcirculation and skin blood flow. Laboratory parameters of blood rheology were measured in addition to safety parameters and course of the …
Antihypertensive effects of lactoferrin hydrolyzates: Inhibition of angiotensin- and endothelin-converting enzymes
2013
The potential of bovine lactoferrin (LF) as a source of antihypertensive peptides acting on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the endothelin (ET) system as dual vasopeptidase inhibitors has been examined. For this purpose enzymatic LF hydrolyzates (LFHs) were generated by trypsin and proteinase K digestions. Permeate fractions with molecular masses lower than 3 kDa (LFH <3 kDa) were orally administered to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Although both LFHs <3 kDa showed in vitro angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity, only proteinase K LFH <3 kDa exerted an in vivo antihypertensive effect. The proteinase K LFH <3 kDa and a previously characterized pepsin LFH <…
A step forward in disclosing the secret of stradivari's varnish by NMR spectroscopy
2017
It is commonly thought that the varnishes used by the great violin-maker Antonio Stradivari may have a role in determining not only the esthetical features but also the acoustic properties of his instruments, and the idea of a “lost secret” is still widespread among musicians and violin-makers. Previous scientific researches on varnish samples of Stradivari's instruments revealed that they were generally made by a mix of linseed oil with and colophony or metal rosinates in different ratios ranging between 75/25 (oil/resin) and 60/40 (oil/rosinate). However, it is still not clear whether the mixture composition can be related to any structural and/or functional feature of the resulting varni…
Preparation, characterization and in vitro antimicrobial activity of ampicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles.
1998
In this paper, the experimental conditions for preparing ampicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate (PECA) nanoparticles are described. The effects of drug concentration and surfactant type in the polymerization medium on the particle size distribution and loading capacity were studied. The results of these studies show that only the type of surfactant has an impact on the nanoparticle dimensions. The release rate of ampicillin from PECA nanoparticles at pH 7.4 (extracellular value pH) performed either with and without esterases, show that the drug release is considerably increased in the presence of these exzymes. The results of drug release study at pH 1.1 (simulated gastric juice) are very…
Application of AC and DC magnetic field for surface wave excitation to enhance mass transfer
2020
Abstract Refining the metallic melts and removal of contaminants from the free surface may be sped up by increasing the surface area of mass exchange interface. It is relevant to both the case of volatile impurity evaporation in a vacuum as well as the case of chemical reactions when the continuous crust of reaction products should be interrupted. Previously proposed low-frequency AC magnetic field excitation of intense surface waves is limited by skin-effect. The induced sign-alternating forcing at high dimensionless frequency values becomes dominantly pulsing at considerably higher than unity values, delivering time-averaged stirring without intense surface waves. Superimposing DC magneti…
