Survival of an Endangered OrchidLiparis loeseliiin Habitats with Different Water Level Fluctuations

Liparis loeselii (L.) Rich. is an endangered orchid species which occurs in wetland habitats. For successful conservation of this orchid it is necessary to recognize its adaptive traits and special habitat requirements. Therefore, we examined morphological and anatomical traits in relation to the water level, cover of vascular plants and seed viability of L. loeselii in habitats with different water level fluctuations. Abstract This paper provides new petrochemical and paleomagnetic data from obsidian sub-sources on the island of Pantelleria, exploited since the Neolithic. Data has been obtained from 14 obsidian samples from 4 locations: Fossa della Pernice (2 sites), Salto la Vecchia and Balata dei Turchi. Here, we aim to better characterize these obsidians using a cross-disciplinary and multi-analytical approach, to further understand their archaeological significance. Origin of clay minerals in soils on pyroclastic deposits in the island of Lipari (Italy)

The island of Lipari (Italy) is characterized by calc-alkaline to potassic volcanism and a Mediterranean-type climate. The mineralogical and chemical features of two different soil profiles with ages of 92,000 and 10,000–40,000 y, respectively, have been investigated. There were no Andisols, but Vitric and Vertic Cambisols have developed at both sites. Although the morphology of the soils was similar, remarkable differences in the clay mineralogy between the two sites were observed. The site with the Vitric Cambisol was associated with the weathering sequence: glass → halloysite → kaolinite or interstratified kaolinite-2:1 clay minerals. The paper offers a contribution to the study of Lilibeo’s figured vases, which make extensive use of added color. The examination of some contexts allows us to clarify the old idea of a derivation of the Lilibetane vases from the workshops of Lipari, due to a displacement of artisans who would operate first in Lipari and then in Lilibeo (like the Swans Painter). It is not completely excludes the movement of craftsmen due to destructions or political changes. However it reconstructs complex interactions in which a main role had to play the influence and the action of medium exercised by the same imported artifacts (Lipari vases, mainly, but not only).

Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands, is located in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. Archeological evidence suggests an early human occupation starting from the Neolithic period. The island, favored by its volcanic history, was an important crossroads of cultures and commerce exchanges during prehistory up to Greek and Roman dominations.
