Evidence of the role of short-term exposure to ozone on ischaemic cerebral and cardiac events: the Dijon Vascular Project (DIVA)

2010

Objectives To confirm the effects of short-term exposure to ozone (O 3 ) on ischaemic heart and cerebrovascular disease. Methods Daily levels of urban O 3 pollution, the incidence of first-ever, recurrent, fatal and non-fatal ischaemic cerebrovascular events (ICVE) and myocardial infarction (MI) were correlated using a case-crossover design. The authors analysed 1574 ICVE and 913 MI that occurred in Dijon, France (150 000 inhabitants) from 2001 to 2007. Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter with an aerodiameter of ≤10 μg/m 3 (PM 10 ) were used to create bi-pollutant models. Using the adjusted OR, the effects of O 3 exposure were calcul…

Significance of lipopigments with fingerprint profiles in eccrine sweat gland epithelial cells.

1995

Lipopigments with fingerprint profiles in eccrine sweat gland epithelial cells are regular findings in childhood NCL. They have also been described in adult NCL (ANCL) a few times, but not consistently. However, they have been considered nonspecific when not matched by similar abnormal profiles in noneccrine sweat gland epithelial cells. These conflicting reports may pose a diagnostic dilemma as outlined in the following 2 examples. Patient 1 is a 20-year-old man who developed severe tetraparesis and dementia over 2 years. Electroencephalogram was abnormal with epileptiform discharges. The patient died at age 21 years without autopsy ; no other relatives are known to have a similar disease.…

Characterization of benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver with SonoVue and pulse inversion US.

2007

Background: We describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US). Methods: Sixteen patients (12 women and four men) with 27 benign hepatic tumors (17 hemangiomas, eight focal nodular hyperplasias, and two hepatocellular adenomas) arising in fatty liver underwent baseline and pulse inversion US after administration of SonoVue. Two experienced radiologists evaluated baseline echogenicity and dynamic enhancement pattern of each lesion in comparison with adjacent liver parenchyma. Results: After administration of SonoVue, in the arterial phase 13 of 17 hemangiomas showed peripheral globular enhancement and…

Heterogeneous delayed enhancement of hepatic parenchyma after intravenous infusion of sonographic contrast agent: a new hypothesis

2007

Purpose. The aim of this paper was to report a heterogeneous latephase hepatic enhancement pattern observed after administration of a sonographic contrast agent and to present an aetiological hypothesis for the phenomenon. Materials and methods. A total of 1,729 (1,012 women and 717 men; age range 28–82; mean age 51) patients underwent contrastenhanced sonography of the liver. The examination was performed with a low mechanical index (MI <0.09) after injection of sulphur-hexafluoride-filled microbubbles, using different fonographic equipment and different contrast-specific algorithms. Results. Heterogeneous delayed liver enhancement was observed in six patients in the late phase (180 s), wi…

Fibrinolysis in hypertriglyceridaemic subjects in response to venous occlusion.

1993

We have measured various fibrinolytic and coagulation parameters (t-PA antigen, PAI, fibrinogen, plasminogen and factor VII) before and after 10 min of venous occlusion in 20 hypertryglyceridaemic subjects (twelve males and eight females, age 38 +/- 4 years, body mass index 23 +/- 1.5) and 20 healthy normal subjects, matched for sex (twelve males and eight females), age (37 +/- 3.5 years) and body mass index (22.8 +/- 1.4). At rest, t-PA:Ag, PAI, fibrinogen, plasminogen and factor VII were significantly (P < 0.005) higher in hypertriglyceridaemic subjects than in normal controls. After venous occlusion, the increase in all parameters except t-PA:Ag was more marked in the patient group than …

Heat-shock protein 60 kDa and atherogenic dyslipidemia in patients with untreated mild periodontitis: a pilot study

2012

Identification of predictors of cardiovascular risk can help in the prevention of pathologic episodes and the management of patients at all stages of illness. Here, we investigated the relationships between serum levels of Hsp60 and dyslipidemia in patients with periodontitis by performing a cross-sectional study of 22 patients with mild periodontitis without any prior treatment for it (i.e., drug naive) and 22 healthy controls, matched for age and body mass index (BMI). All subjects were evaluated for periodontal status, gingival inflammation, and oral hygiene. Levels of circulating Hsp60, C-reactive protein (CRP), and plasma lipids were measured, and small, dense low-density lipoproteins …

Lack of association between hemorheological alterations and upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis.

2009

Introduction: There is an association between rheological alterations and lower extremity deep vein thrombosis, although no research has been carried out regarding the possible influence of rheological alterations in the development of venous thrombosis in the upper limbs. Materials and methods: We have determined in 54 patients (23 male, 31 female; aged 35 ± 11 years) with primary upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT), and in a well matched control group of 87 subjects (41 male, 46 female; aged 36 ± 12 years) the rheological profile (blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, erythrocyte aggregation, erythrocyte de- formability) along with plasma lipids (total cholesterol and tr…

LDL particle size and composition and incident cardiovascular disease in a South-European population: The Hortega-Liposcale Follow-up Study.

2018

Abstract Background The association of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle composition with cardiovascular risk has not been explored before. The aim was to evaluate the relationship between baseline LDL particle size and composition (proportions of large, medium and small LDL particles over their sum expressed as small-LDL %, medium-LDL % and large-LDL %) and incident cardiovascular disease in a population-based study. Methods Direct measurement of LDL particles was performed using a two-dimensional NMR-technique (Liposcale®). LDL cholesterol was assessed using both standard photometrical methods and the Liposcale® technique in a representative sample of 1162 adult men and women from Sp…

Polymorphisms in the SCD1 gene are associated with indices of stearoyl CoA desaturase activity and obesity: a prospective study.

2013

Scope The serum fatty acid (FA) composition is influenced by dietary fat and the endogenous production of FAs. Stearoyl CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) is the rate-limiting enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of MUFAs from saturated FAs. Variations in SCD1 activity have been associated with obesity, diabetes, or inflammation. We evaluated the associations between genetic variation of the SCD1 gene, SCD1 activity, intake of oil, and obesity in a population-based prospective study in southern Spain. Methods and results We collected phenotypic, metabolic, nutritional, and genetic information. The type of dietary fat was assessed from samples of cooking oil taken from the participants’ kitchens and analyze…

A new delivery system of clobetasol-17-propionate (lipid-loaded microspheres 0.025%) compared with a conventional formulation (lipophilic ointment in…

2004

Summary Background  Topical application of clobetasol-17-propionate has been diffusely reported as an efficacious therapy in atrophic/erosive oral lichen planus (OLP), without exposing the patient to systemic side-effects. However, prolonged contact and respective topical effects on the oral mucosa should be avoided. Objectives  The aim of the present study was to evaluate efficacy and compliance of new lipid microspheres loaded with 0·025% of clobetasol propionate (formulation A) compared with a commonly used formulation (a sort of dispersion of a lipophilic ointment in a hydrophilic phase) with the same amount of drug (formulation B) in the topical treatment of OLP.
