Study of lip hydration with application of photoprotective lipstick : influence of skin phototype, size of lips, age, sex and smoking habits

Objectives: To study lip hydration levels when applying a lipstick sunscreen for 3 months and to evaluate the influence of size of lips, age, sex, smoking and skin phototype. Study design: The study group was formed by 140 volunteer subjects, one group consisting of 70 patients applying a commercial lipstick sunscreen three times a day and the other group of 70 controls in which no product was applied. The age range was 20-86 years. The influence in lip hydration levels of age, sex, phototype, size of the lips and smoking habits was studied using a Corneometer 825® (Courage and Khazaka Electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany). Determination of butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, benzophenone-3, octyl dimethyl PABA and octyl methoxycinnamate in lipsticks.

The complex composition of lipstick formulations usually needs the use of organic solvents for sample dissolution. A treatment based on dissolution of cosmetic samples in ethanol-water (70 : 30, v/v) by use of ultrasonic irradiation is proposed. A C(18) stationary phase and an isocratic mobile phase of ethanol:water:acetic acid (70 : 29.5 : 0.5, v/v/v) with a flow rate of 1 mL min(-1) and an injection volume of 20 microL is proposed for the high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of four UV-filters, and detection was carried out at 309 nm. Persistent lipsticks and their lip prints: new hidden evidence at the crime scene

Latent lip print test results produced by permanent lipsticks are presented in this work. This cosmetic product, contrary to conventional lipsticks, does not leave visible prints and can thus be overlooked at the crime scene. As print vehicles the study used ceramics, glass, cotton fabric and paper. Lip prints were left to dwell for different periods and were later developed using aluminum powder, cobalt oxide powder and magnetic powder. The results show that identifiable lip prints can be obtained up to 30 days after being produced.

At the present time fingerprints are one of the simplest, and most reliable means of identification. Increasingly, crime scene investigators look for palm, foot, ear or lip prints.
