One-piece micropumps from liquid crystalline core-shell particles

2012

Responsive polymers are low-cost, light weight and flexible, and thus an attractive class of materials for the integration into micromechanical and lab-on-chip systems. Triggered by external stimuli, liquid crystalline elastomers are able to perform mechanical motion and can be utilized as microactuators. Here we present the fabrication of one-piece micropumps from liquid crystalline core-shell elastomer particles via a microfluidic double-emulsion process, the continuous nature of which enables a low-cost and rapid production. The liquid crystalline elastomer shell contains a liquid core, which is reversibly pumped into and out of the particle by actuation of the liquid crystalline shell i…

Fast photoconduction in the highly ordered columnar phase of a discotic liquid crystal

1994

THE search for organic materials suitable for electronic applica-tions dates back to the early 1950s. But the only organic systems known so far to show electronic charge-carrier mobilities comparable to the amorphous inorganic semiconductors that are the main-stay of the microelectronics industry are zone-refined organic single crystals1–4. Single crystals are difficult and costly to process, however, and are not suitable for device applications. Here we show that a highly ordered columnar (stacked) phase of disk-like organic molecules can exhibit high mobilities for photoinduced charge carriers, of the order of 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1—higher than for any organic material other than single-crystal …

Analysis of multiple internal reflections in a parallel aligned liquid crystal on silicon SLM

2014

Multiple internal reflection effects on the optical modulation of a commercial reflective parallel-aligned liquid-crystal on silicon (PAL-LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM) are analyzed. The display is illuminated with different wavelengths and different angles of incidence. Non-negligible Fabry-Perot (FP) effect is observed due to the sandwiched LC layer structure. A simplified physical model that quantitatively accounts for the observed phenomena is proposed. It is shown how the expected pure phase modulation response is substantially modified in the following aspects: 1) a coupled amplitude modulation, 2) a non-linear behavior of the phase modulation, 3) some amount of unmodulated light…

Liquid Crystalline Ordering and Charge Transport in Semiconducting Materials

2009

Organic semiconducting materials offer the advantage of solution processability into flexible films. In most cases, their drawback is based on their low charge carrier mobility, which is directly related to the packing of the molecules both on local (amorphous versus crystalline) and on macroscopic (grain boundaries) length scales. Liquid crystalline ordering offers the possibility of circumventing this problem. An advanced concept comprises: i) the application of materials with different liquid crystalline phases, ii) the orientation of a low viscosity high temperature phase, and, iii) the transfer of the macroscopic orientation during cooling to a highly ordered (at best, crystalline-like…

Structural, electronic, and electrical properties of an Undoped n-Type CdO thin film with high electron concentration

2014

Transparent conducting metal oxides (TCOs) combine the properties of optical transparency in the visible region with a high electrical conductivity. They are a critical component as the window electrode in liquid crystal and electroluminescent display devices, as well as in many designs of solar cells now under development. Sn-doped In2O3 is currently the most important TCO, but it suffers from some drawbacks. These include the high cost of indium, weak optical absorption in the blue-green region, as well as chemical instability that leads to corrosion phenomena in organic light-emitting devices. Indium tin oxide (ITO) films are also brittle and of relatively low durability. A number of oth…

Synthesis of Fluorinated Bent-Core Mesogens (BCMs) Containing the 1,2,4-Oxadiazole Ring

2015

New fluorinated bent-core mesogens containing the 1,2,4-oxadiazole or 1,2,4-triazole nucleus have been synthesized taking advantage of the ANRORC (Addition of Nucleophile, Ring-Opening, Ring-Closure) reactivity of 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles. Physical state changes of the obtained compounds were characterized through DSC, POM, and SAXS. Besides the formation of a smectic mesophase, a novel behavior as organic molecular glass was evidenced for some 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives.

Solubilisation of multi walled carbon nanotubes by alpha-pyrene functionalised PMMA and their liquid crystalline self-organisation.

2008

alpha-Pyrene functionalised poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains were synthesised by RAFT polymerisation and found to be highly efficient to solubilise and disentangle multi walled carbon nanotubes that can now self-organise as liquid crystalline phases in PMMA and PEG 400 matrices.

Spectroscopic characterization of red perylimide/surfactant nanocomposites

2011

Novel photoluminescent materials formed by some selected surfactants, metal derivatives of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (M(AOT)n; M = Na+, Co2+, Er3+ and Yb3+), bis(2-ethylhexyl) amine (BEEA), bis(2-ethylhexy1) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) and a 1:1 BEEA/HDEHP mixture, doped with the red perylimide (ROT-300) have been prepared, and their optical properties have been tested by absorption spectroscopy and steady state and timeresolved fluorescence. Experimental results show spectral shifts of the typical ROT-300 absorption and fluorescence bands with respect to that in apolar solvent medium. Data analysis leads consistently to attribute this feature mainly to the freezing of the diffusive move…
