ASSESMENT OF TEMPERATURE POLARIZATION IN MEMBRANE DISTILLATION CHANNELS BY LIQUID CRYSTAL THERMOGRAPHY
2014
AbstractThe measurement of local temperature distributions within a membrane distillation (MD) channel is a crucial step for the optimization of the channel and spacer geometry. This information allows the estimation of temperature polarization phenomena, which can dramatically influence the thermal efficiency of the process and the optimal choice of the geometric configuration (net spacer features, channel size, etc.). In the present work, a recently presented experimental technique, based on the use of thermochromic liquid crystals and digital image analysis, has been employed in order to assess the temperature polarization phenomena. The local heat transfer coefficient distribution on th…
First Example of Coexistence of Thermal Spin Transition and Liquid-Crystal Properties.
2001
The rodlike FeIII complex of an N-alkyloxysalicylidenyl-N'-ethyl-N-ethylenediamine ligand, shown as a computer model in the picture, is the first compound in which spin-crossover (SC) and liquid-crystalline (LC) properties coexist. This synergy should allow the magnetic and optical properties of SC compounds to be combined with the sensitivity of the LC state to electromagnetic fields.
X-ray investigations of the superstructure of collagen
2008
When compared with results from humid fibers, characteristic changes of the SAXS-pattern taken from dried collagen fibers have been observed. The average lateral width of the various reflexions increases with the order of reflexion whereby a fluctuation is superimposed, the type of which cannot easily be related to the reflexion order. Moreover, each of the reflexions is obviously laterally split into three components. An explanation of these characteristics can be given with the aid of a distinct model, assuming that the collagen fibrils have definitely varying diameters along their axis, whereby paracrystalline distortions appear, represented by nematic fluctuations. Additionally, there i…

Discotic Liquid Crystals - A New Class of Fast Photoconductors
1993
We showed for the first time that discotic liquid crystals are well suited for a new class of fast photoconducting materials. Due to their spontaneous orientation and their dynamical fluctuations in the mesophase, they show exceptionally high mobilities of 1·10−3 cm2/Vs, about two to three orders of magnitude higher than those obtained for conventional amorphous polymers. Further on, the Gaussian transport (for holes in the mesophase) is remarkable, which is characterized by the existence of a conduction band and the absence of trapping states. In contrast, the charge carrier transport in amorphous photoconductors is generally trap-dominated which limits technical properties, leading to low…

Vibrational circular dichroism studies of exceptionally strong chirality inducers in liquid crystals.
2021
7,7′-Disubstituted 2,2′-methylenedioxy-1,1′-binaphthyls are highly efficient chirality inducers in nematic liquid crystals. The absolute configuration of these compounds is, however, hard to determine as they only crystallize as racemic mixtures. In this work a Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) study is reported that provides an unambiguous determination of the absolute configuration of these compounds. An in-depth General Coupled Oscillator (GCO) analysis of the source of the VCD signal reveals that the unusual structure of these binaphthyl compounds inherently leads to strong and robust VCD bands. Combined with linear transit calculations, our VCD studies allow for the determination of…

Multifunctionality in spin crossover materials
2005
Abstract One of the most important trends in the spin crossover (SCO) field is focused on the synthesis of new molecule-based functional materials in which the SCO properties may be combined with other physical or chemical properties in a synergic fashion. The current stage of investigations regarding interplay and synergic effects between SCO, magnetic coupling, liquid crystalline properties, host–guest interactions, non-linear optical properties, electrical conductivity, and ligand isomerization is highlighted and discussed.

3,6-Bis(2-arylethenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazines - Synthesis, LC Properties and Photochemistry The (E,E)-3,6-Bis(2-arylethenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazines 8 were prepared in a synthetic sequence starting with aromatic aldehydes 1 and cinnamic acids 2, respectively (Scheme 1). The rod-like conjugated molecules represent calamitic mesogens as well as extended chromophores. Hence, we investigated the formation of liquid crystals, achieved by the introduction of long flexible side chains, and the photochemical behaviour that is characterized by the fragmentation of the central ring (Scheme 3).
