The IFN-γ-Inducible GTPase, Irga6, Protects Mice against Toxoplasma gondii but Not against Plasmodium berghei and Some Other Intracellular Pathogens
2011
Clearance of infection with intracellular pathogens in mice involves interferon-regulated GTPases of the IRG protein family. Experiments with mice genetically deficient in members of this family such as Irgm1(LRG-47), Irgm3(IGTP), and Irgd(IRG-47) has revealed a critical role in microbial clearance, especially for Toxoplasma gondii. The in vivo role of another member of this family, Irga6 (IIGP, IIGP1) has been studied in less detail. We investigated the susceptibility of two independently generated mouse strains deficient in Irga6 to in vivo infection with T. gondii, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Leishmania mexicana, L. major, Listeria monocytogenes, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Plasmodium …

Physical forces in blister formation. The role of colloid osmotic pressure and of total osmolality in fluid migration into the rising blister.
1978
The physical forces operative in the fluid migration from the interstitial spaces into the blister cleft have not been directly measured until now. The colloid osmotic pressure and the total osmolality were determined in suction blister fluid after mild suction blister production by a modified “Dermovac” and in blister fluid of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, bullous allergic contact dermatitis and pemphigus vulgaris and in the sera of healthy persons. The colloid osmotic pressure was measured by means of a recently developed osmometer with a semipermeable membrane between 2 chambers, one of them filled with Ringer solution, the other with the blister fluid or serum sample. The nega…
Yksilöllistetyssä erityisopetuksessa työskentelevien erityisopettajien oppimiskäsitykset
2017
TIIVISTELMÄ Tommila-Väisänen, Riikka, 2017. Yksilöllistetyssä erityisopetuksessa työskentelevien erityisopettajien oppimiskäsitykset. Kasvatustieteen pro gradu - tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Kasvatustieteiden laitos. 126 sivua. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella yksilöllistetyssä erityisopetuksessa työskentelevien erityisopettajien näkemyksiä ja kokemuksia opetusta ohjaavista tai siihen vaikuttavista oppimiskäsityksistä. Lisäksi tutkimuksen päätehtävänä on selvittää, millaisen teoreettisen tietämyksen erityisopettajat omaavat erilaisista oppimiskäsityksistä. Tutkielman teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä tarkastellaan oppimiskäsityksiä, yksilöllistettyä erityisopetusta sekä erityisopet…
“No, I’m Not Reading”: How Two Language Learners Enact Their Investments by Crossing and Blurring the Boundaries of Literacy and Orality
2019
This chapter makes an argument for bridging the gap between Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Literacy Studies from the perspective of so-called transmodalities, i.e. ways of using language that merge and blur the modalities of writing, speaking, listening, and reading. This argument is based on data from a qualitative case study that describes the transmodal practices of two trilingual high school students in a German classroom in the Midwestern US. More precisely, the study investigated how the high school students Jana and Karina (both pseudonyms), users of English, Latvian, and German, engaged in activities that mixed and blurred oral and literacy modalities in their German classroo…
Incidence of microorganisms from fresh orange juice processed by squeezing machines
2012
Abstract This study was carried out to evaluate the microbiological quality of orange juice obtained from squeezing machines in foodservice establishments. The samples included fresh squeezed orange juice and juice which is maintained in metal jugs until consumption. According to the European Commission Regulation (No. 2073/2005 and No. 1441/2007) and Spanish microbiological criteria (No. 3484/2000), 12% and 43% of the total examined lots exceed the adopted limits of mesophilic aerobic counts and Enterobacteriaceae, respectively. Possibly, this contamination is caused by incorrect handling of oranges and juices and also by inadequate cleaning and sanitization of squeezing machine and metal …
Generation Z and Organizational Listening on Social Media
2020
Young people are avid users of social media and have appeared as a powerful force for social change, as shown by the ranks of those who have joined Greta Thunberg in the global climate movement. In addition to challenging political institutions and governments, young people today are also holding the corporate world accountable. To respond to young people’s expectations, brands, and organizations have turned to social media to interact and build relationships with them. However, critics have lamented that these attempts often fail and that young people’s trust in institutions, brands, and organizations continues to decline. This article asks how young people perceive organizational listenin…
Virtual reality acceptance and commitment therapy intervention for social and public speaking anxiety : A randomized controlled trial
2023
Virtual reality (VR) offers new and flexible ways to provide psychological interventions. The aim of this study was to develop and investigate the effectiveness of a VR intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for social and public speaking anxiety. ACT is a process-based approach that aims to (a) increase individuals’ abilities to handle difficult emotional and cognitive experiences and (b) develop the motivation required for change to occur. In this study, a sample of university students with social interaction or communication anxiety (N = 76; age M = 24.95, SD = 6.50, 69.7% females) was blindly randomized into a total of 2 h of VR ACT training (VRACT; n = 37) or a w…
Impact of relative air humidity fluctuations on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes : application to improve hygiene in food processing environment
2016
Environmental hydration fluctuations influence microorganism viability and activity. The air relative humidity (RH) is a potentially effective parameter to control the development and the persistence of pathogenic microorganisms. However, efficiency of this parameter remains not well characterized compared to others environmental factors such as pH or temperature. Drying is the final step of cleaning and disinfection processes used in the food industry. However, if this process is empirically used, it could also be used to improve the decontamination of surfaces in premises and reduce the persistence of microorganisms. Despite cleaning and disinfection, Listeria monocytogenes is commonly fo…
