This paper describes the development, current state and expected future development of the assessment systems that most of the papers in the present volume cover. Our focus is on the systems serving general education, particularly the Matriculation Examination and national evaluations of educational achievement in languages, as well as the National Certificates of Proficiency aimed at adult language learners. We describe how changes in our understanding of what language proficiency is have affected these assessment systems and discuss the impact that some of them have been expected to have and what is known about that impact. Tässä artikkelissa pohditaan, millainen ammattikorkeakoulujen hoitoalan englanninkielinen tutkinto-ohjelma on suomen kielen oppimisen näkökulmasta. Artikkeli pohjautuu asiasta tehtyyn taustatutkimukseen, omiin kokemuksiimme kansainvälisille hoitoalan opiskelijoille suunnattujen suomen kurssien opettajina sekä opiskelijoilta saatuun palautteeseen. Hoitotyössä tarvittavan ammatillisen kielitaidon oppiminen erillisellä kielikurssilla on haastavaa. Kielitaito kehittyy parhaiten todellisten työtehtävien yhteydessä ja kielellisen tuen avulla. Suomen kielen U-verbit taitotason indikaattorina

Artikkelin lahtokohtana on kysymys lingvistisista indikaattoreista eri funktionaalisia kielitaitotasoja osoittamassa. Tutkimuskohteena ovat suomen kielen U-verbit, joiden on aiemman tutkimuksen perusteella todettu tuottavan ongelmia hyvin edistyneillekin suomenoppijoille. U-verbit ovat intransitiivisia verbijohdoksia, joiden kantaverbeilla on tavallisesti A-vartalo, esim. vaihtaa > vaihtua ja jatkaa > jatkua . U-verbit voivat olla esimerkiksi refleksiivisia tai automatiivisia. Automatiivisuudella tarkoitetaan, etta jotakin tapahtuu ei-intentionaalisesti tai ilman elollista agenttia. Tämän pro gradu –tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella englannin opettajaopiskelijoiden näkemyksiä englannin opettamisen tapoja ja tavoitteita. Kielen opettamista säädetään ja määritellään kansallisissa opetussuunnitelmissa, joita uudistetaan noin kymmenen vuoden välein. Englanti on Suomessa eniten opiskeltu vieras kieli ja tavoitteet englannin opettamiselle ovat korkeat. This article discusses an experiment which we are conducting in the field of Finnish as a second language. We are developing an Internet-based program that learners of Finnish can use to assess their own writing skills. The program code originally comes from the DIALANG project, which is developing a diagnostic language assessment system for 14 languages for the Internet. We selected two new writing tasks for the program, and constructed related sets of benchmark performances to enable the learners to assess their own abilities. In this chapter, we present multilingual and intercultural communication competence (MICC) as a situational and contextual process. The aim of this qualitative, empirical study is to understand the students’ perceptions of assessing MICC as a holistic phenomenon that does not represent an ethnocentric world view and considers the role of language use in interaction. We look at assessing MICC as a process of giving and receiving feedback rather than as a summative assessment. The data consist of 74 texts on assessments written by university students. AbstractIn this chapter, we analyse the features of textbooks that enable and facilitate their role as material agents in the classroom. Rather than analyse the ways textbooks are used in interaction with humans, we analyse the elements in the textbook itself that facilitate intra-action and the ensuing material agency. Based on a discursive analysis of self-assessment in one textbook and discussing that construct against the Finnish national core curriculum and previous research, we present an ‘ideal imaginary’ of classroom activities as construed in the textbook.
