Bridging the Gaps: Literacy, Media Literacy Education, and Critical Digital Social Work

Drawing from literacy studies and research in media literacy education, this article contends that a series of conceptual gaps need to be bridged in order to have a better understanding of how these traditions can contribute to redefining the field of digital social work. The field of digital social work should move towards a more critical-oriented dimension so that digital media and the internet should not simply be considered (as is often the case), as mere tools to improve the professionality of social workers, but rather as life environments and systems of representation shaping individuals’ identities and social relationships.

Literacy practices in two Danish-Somali families : Between training, testing and “feeding the soul”

This article explores the literacy practices in two Danish-Somali families with young children. The data comes from focused ethnographic fieldwork in the families. The study is rooted in a sociocultural view of literacy, aiming at understanding how different ways of engaging with language and the written word express different beliefs and values about literacy. The study finds that school-oriented literacy training and literacy tests as well as religious practices play important roles in the everyday lives of the families. Il presente capitolo ricostruisce, attraverso una disamina della letteratura scientifica di riferimento, il tema del rapporto tra giovani e partecipazione in rete. Il primo paragrafo ripercorre brevemente le principali tesi con cui si è cercato di descrivere e spiegare in che modo i media digitali e la rete sono una risorsa cruciale nel processo di socializzazione e costruzione dell’identità di adolescenti e giovani.
