Methods Data consisted of cross-sectional data from Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study from year 2017/18 of ten European countries (Austria, Belgium (Fl), Czechia, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, and Slovakia). 2022
Objective The aim of this systematic review was to provide an overview of cross-sectional studies that examined health literacy among university students and to identify possible determinants related to health literacy. Results of included studies were narratively summarized. Results The systematic review includes twenty-one research studies. The majority of studies report health literacy scores…
Historical literacy and contradictory evidence in Finnish high school setting : The Bronzen Soldier of Tallinn
2016
This article revolves around three key issues. First, over the last 30 years, the traditional approach to history teaching as memorization of facts and chains of events has been changing. Currently, the Finnish national core curriculum fixes the focus of history teaching on students’ critical and historical thinking skills. However, the curriculum leaves a lot of maneuvering scope for schools and individual teachers, but teachers seemingly still emphasize content over skills with too little focus on historical thinking skills. Second, Finland has so far been lacking in research on students’ historical thinking skills, even if they have been adopted as an important part of the curriculum. Wh…
Narrative inquiry and historical skills. A study in teacher training
2017
This paper addresses narrative thinking and literacy levels in future primary school teachers in Spain. It uses the study of a historical synthesis of one of the main narratives in Spanish history: the Christian expansion through Muslim territories in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. Accounts by 283 students of the degree in elementary school teaching at the universities of Valencia and Murcia were studied. The aim was to ascertain the students' discursive abilities with respect to their historical thinking skills. The results reveal poor narrative skills in future teachers and a very low level of historical literacy.
The home literacy model in a highly transparent orthography
2019
We investigated the extent to which home literacy activities during the preschool year would predict the development of children’s language and literacy skills in primary school, in a highly transparent Finnish language. Also, the correlates of maternal literacy activities during preschool were examined. Literacy and language skills of 1,880 children (6-year-olds at the baseline) were tested at 5 time points from the beginning of preschool to the end of Year 2; mothers filled in questionnaires at the end of preschool. The results showed that home teaching of reading at preschool age predicted children’s emergent literacy (letter knowledge, word reading fluency) in primary school, while shar…
Household Budget Management and Financial Behaviour of the Italian Family in Times of Crisis*
2023
Why are Italians at the bottom of international rankings on financial literacy? Why do they fail to make speculative financial choices and have a marked aptitude for precautionary saving? Using a Weberian perspective on household “budget management” [haushalt] and analysing the results of recent research (e.g. OECD, CONSOB and Bank of Italy), the authors argue that there are always “good reasons” and thus specific rationality that encourages people to save and reject financial speculation. This economic choice emanates from cognitive bias, financial socialisation, financial literacy, and environmental conditions. The hypothesis is that Italian households demonstrate a weaker attitude toward…

Learning English informally through authentic literacy practices : a case study of Finnish 8th grade students
2010
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten hyödyllisinä englannin oppimisen kannalta kahdeksasluokkalaiset nuoret kokevat erilaiset tekstikäytännöt koulun ulkopuolella arkitodellisuudessaan. Tutkimuksessa etsitään vastauksia seuraaviin kysymyksiin: 1) Mitkä koulun ulkopuoliset tekstikäytännöt tukevat englannin oppimista? 2) Millaisia yhtäläisyyksiä ja eroja oppilaiden…
Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa: Goals and Prospects of CAPOLSA at the University of Zambia
2014
The convergence of two complementary agendas motivated collaboration between two universities (in Zambia and Finland) to establish the Centre for the Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa (CAPOLSA), focused on initial literacy learning in indigenous languages. The project’s mandate and activities are closely related to Zambia’s national context of literacy and educational provision, emerging trends in information and communication technology, and the University of Zambia’s institutional context of research and development on literacy, child development, and education. CAPOLSA has afforded opportunities for enhancing the working relations between the national university and government …
