Experiments on tritium generation and yield from lithium ceramics during neutron irradiation
2021
Abstract The vacuum extraction method with a mass spectrometry registration of tritium is presented in paper. It can provide a full-range analysis of gas phase composition in the chamber with samples under neutron irradiation. Lithium ceramics Li2TiO3 in the form of pebbles with lithium enrichment on 6Li isotope of 96% was examined. The paper shows the results of reactor experiments on study the extraction of tritium-containing molecules from lithium ceramics Li2TiO3 at various temperatures and reactor power levels at the WWR-K research reactor (Almaty, Kazakhstan). The time dependences of tritium yield from the ampoule with ceramics during reactor irradiation were obtained. Near-surface co…
Lithium niobate step-index waveguides for broadband second harmonic generation
2006
We investigate modal phase matching in lithium niobate step-index waveguides for second harmonic generation. We predict doubling bandwidths as large as 110 nm and show that temperature tuning can compensate for any deviation from the designed film thickness. © World Scientific Publishing Company.
Aluminum-lithium clusters: First-principles simulation of geometries and electronic properties
2002
The geometries and electronic properties of small lithium-rich ${\mathrm{Al}}_{N}{\mathrm{Li}}_{5N}$ $(N=1--6,10)$ clusters are studied using first-principles simulations. Aluminum ions form a compact inner core configuration in the clusters that changes into a chainlike skeleton embedded in a lithium surrounding as the cluster size increases. This behavior restricts $s\ensuremath{-}p$ hybridization effects and causes separate s and p bands in the electronic energy spectrum. A significant charge transfer from Li ions and nearby Al ions strengthens ionic Al-Li bonds, while Al-Al bonds gain a more covalent nature. The evolution of some bulk properties of $B2$ and $B32$ phases of AlLi alloys i…
Characterisation and radiolysis of modified lithium orthosilicate pebbles with noble metal impurities
2017
Modified lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) pebbles with additions of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are suggested as an alternative tritium breeding ceramic for the European solid breeder test blanket module. The noble metals – platinum (Pt), gold (Au) and rhodium (Rh), can be introduced into the modified Li4SiO4 pebbles during the melt-based process, due to the corrosion of Pt-Rh and Pt-Au alloy crucible components. In this study, the surface microstructure, chemical and phase composition of the modified Li4SiO4 pebbles with different contents of the noble metals was analysed. The influence of the noble metals on the radiolysis was evaluated after irradiation with accelerated electrons (E = 5 MeV),…
Reaction pathways for atomic layer deposition with lithium hexamethyl disilazide, trimethyl phosphate, and oxygen plasma
2020
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of lithium-containing films is of interest for the development of next-generation energy storage devices. Lithium hexamethyl disilazide (LiHMDS) is an established precursor to grow these types of films. The LiHMDS molecule can either be used as a single-source precursor molecule for lithium or as a dual-source precursor molecule for lithium and silicon. Single-source behavior of LiHMDS is observed in the deposition process with trimethylphosphate (TMP) resulting in the deposition of crystalline lithium phosphate (Li3PO4). In contrast, LiHMDS exhibits dual-source behavior when combined with O2 plasma, resulting in a lithium silicate. Both processes were characte…
<title>Optical characteristics of doped lithium niobate single crystals</title>
2003
Studing of the Raman spectra was established that an optical parameters of oxygen-polyhedral ferroelectric single crystals can be improved by increasing the degree of structural ordering of the cation sublattice along the polar axis by doping them. In this case the impurity ions with the ionic radii close to the radii of the main cations (Li+ and Nb5+) and charges intermediate between those of main cations (1<Z<5) in the area of rather low concentrations were shown to exert an ordering effect on the cation sublattice of a congruent lithium niobate single crystals. Moreover the crystal resistance to laser radiation is also observed to grow. It was determined that the effect of diminishing ph…
Volume integrated phase modulator based on funnel waveguides for reconfigurable miniaturized optical circuits.
2015
We demonstrate the integration of a miniaturized 30(x) μm × 30(y) μm × 2.7(z) mm electro-optic phase modulator operating in the near-IR (λ = 980 nm) based on the electro-activation of a funnel waveguide inside a paraelectric sample of photorefractive potassium lithium tantalate niobate. The modulator forms a basic tassel in the realization of miniaturized reconfigurable optical circuits embedded in a single solid-state three-dimensional chip.
Kinetics of Photorefractive Light Scattering in LiNbO3:Cu and LiNbO3:Zn Single Crystals
2011
Results of studies of the kinetics of photorefractive light scattering (PRLS) in optically nonlinear congruent single crystals of lithium niobate (LiNbO3, Li/Nb = 0.946) containing multivalent cation admixtures of Cu [0.015 mass %] (“photorefractive”) and Zn [0.5 mass %] (“non-photorefractive”) are reported. The shape of the PRLS indicatrix is found to be different in case of Cu and Zn admixtures. However, the angular widening of the indicatrix in both cases reaches its stationary value faster at higher laser radiation intensities. The PRLS is found to depend on the site of the ingot from which the samples are cut – an evidence of non-uniform distribution of defects with localised electrons…
Dielectric properties of PMN+2%Li 2 O at low frequencies
2012
The reported study is focused on effects of the admixture of lithium (2% Li2O) on the low-frequency dielectric response in lead magnesium niobate ceramics over the 100 -300 K range of temperature. The obtained results reveal an essential thermal broadening of the e′(ν) spectra specific to relaxor ferroelectrics. Dispersion Δe′ = e′1Hz-e′1kHz and values of e′′(ν) in lead magnesium niobate ceramics containing Li are well described by the Cole-Cole equation at temperatures below the e′(T) maximum. Based on the analysis of the experimental data admixture of lithium is suggested to promote formation of domains in lead magnesium niobate ceramics (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
Features of randomized electric-field assisted domain inversion in lithium tantalate
2011
We report on bulk and guided-wave second-harmonic generation via random Quasi-Phase-Matching in Lithium Tantalate. By acquiring the far-field profiles at several wavelengths, we extract statistical information on the distribution of the quadratic nonlinearity as well as its average period, both at the surface and in the bulk of the sample. By investigating the distribution in the two regions we demonstrate a non-invasive approach to the study of poling dynamics.
