The role of radiolysis products in in situ luminescence of Li2O

Abstract A new phenomenon of an “excess luminescence” (EL) in Li 2 O observed at 4.5–2.5 eV under light ion (H + , He + ) irradiation during the rise of temperature (>573 K ) was studied. The essence of the EL is in the rapid pulse increase of the luminescence intensity. It is proposed that this phenomenon is based on the thermo-dissociation of colloidal Li into Li lattice ions, F + and F 0 centers, and oxygen vacancies. Formed oxygen vacancies capture electrons during the irradiation and form excited F-centers, whose relaxation gives the EL. Radiation displacement defect formation in some complex oxide crystals

The work is devoted to an analysis of the formation processes of radiation displacement defects (RDDs) and color centers (CCs) under irradiation of complex oxide crystals. The results of the displacement process simulation as well as the analysis of the RDDs and CCs accumulation kinetics in some complex oxide crystals are presented. New experimental results on additional absorption spectra induced by neutron irradiation of LiNbO3 (LNO) crystals doped with Fe and Cr and YAlO3 (YAP) crystals doped with Nd and Er as well are presented. Abstract Tin–lithium alloys have several attractive thermo-physical properties, in particular high thermal conductivity and heat capacity, that make them potentially interesting candidates for use in liquid metal blankets. This paper presents an evaluation of the advantages and drawbacks caused by the substitution of the currently employed alloy lead–lithium (Pb–17Li) by a suitable tin–lithium alloy: (i) for the European water-cooled Pb–17Li (WCLL) blanket concept with reduced activation ferritic–martensitic steel as the structural material; (ii) for the European self-cooled TAURO blanket with SiCf/SiC as the structural material. Abstract One of the technological problems of a fusion reactor is the change in composition and structure of ceramic breeders (Li 4 SiO 4 or Li 2 TiO 3 pebbles) during long-term operation. In this study changes in the composition and microstructure of Li 4 SiO 4 pebbles with 2.5 wt% silicon dioxide additions, fabricated by a melt-spraying process, were investigated after fast electron irradiation ( E = 5 MeV, dose rate up to 88 MGy h −1 ) with high absorbed dose from 1.3 to 10.6 GGy at high temperature (543–573 K) in air and argon atmosphere. Abstract Ceramic breeder (CB) pebbles consisting of lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) as the main phase and lithium metasilicate (Li2SiO3) as a secondary phase were analysed with respect to radiation-induced defects and radiolysis products. Therefore, pebbles that were irradiated with neutrons in the so-called HICU experiment ( H igh neutron fluence i rradiation of pebble sta c ks for f u sion) were compared to pebbles irradiated with accelerated electrons and to an unirradiated sample. Stimulated-echo NMR spectroscopy of 9Be and 7Li in solids: method and application to ion conductors.

The generation of pure quadrupolar stimulated-echo spectra is successfully demonstrated for the spin-3/2 probe 9Be in a single crystal of triglycine fluoberyllate. This solid exhibits a paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition. From experiments carried out for various mixing times no indications for a slow soft mode could be detected in this crystal. Then ion conducting lithium metal phosphates were studied using 7Li, another spin-3/2 probe which allows for a non-selective excitation of the entire NMR spectrum. Hardening and long-range stress formation in lithium fluoride induced by energetic ions

Abstract LiF crystals were irradiated with Au, Pb, Bi and S ions in the energy range 400–2300 MeV and studied by means of Vickers microindentation. Remarkable hardening effects are observed which depend on the applied fluence and ion species, and correlate with the ion energy loss along the ion path. Structural investigations reveal irradiation-induced stress extending deep into the adjacent non-irradiated crystal and leading to the formation of dislocations. X-ray diffraction measurements of the irradiated crystals show a decrease of the lattice constant indicating the presence of internal stress.

Abstract Lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) pebbles with 2.5 wt.% excess of silicon dioxide (SiO2) are the European Union's designated reference tritium breeding ceramics for the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) Test Blanket Module (TBM). However, the latest irradiation experiments showed that the reference Li4SiO4 pebbles may crack and form fragments under operation conditions as expected in the HCPB TBM. The intended steady-state operation conditions of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-DEMO Oriented Neutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) target system are based on the D+ beam stationary running at full nominal power (5 MW). Nevertheless, critical situations can occur in the case of unavoidable sudden events like beam trips. Comparative study of electrical behavior and phase transitions in pure and chromium doped α-LiIO3single crystals

Abstract The polymorphic phase transitions of undoped and chromium doped α-LiIO3 crystals have been investigated by means of DTA experiments at slow heating rates and electrical measurements vs temperature and frequency. Upon heating the well known α ⇔ γ ⇒ β sequence appears to be influenced by the sample's morphology, acidity of the growing solution and doping. Dielectric response at room temperature is close to the type “superposition of d.c. ionic conductivity and dipolar response”. We describe the thermal behavior of conductivity along the c polar axis at three frequencies.
