The development of extra-judicial systems of collective conflict resolution in Southern Europe: Understanding the Spanish system

There has been an increasing tendency to promote systems of extra-judicial intervention in resolving collective conflicts in Southern European countries. However, it seems that it has been difficult for these initiatives to displace traditional judicial avenues of settlement. We consider various efforts to promote extra-judicial settlement, and identify the greater success enjoyed by the Spanish system of settlement in providing an alternative to labour courts. Explanatory factors include its distinctive design features, social partner unity and deficiencies in the judicial system. This introductory chapter proposes a mainly theoretical reflection on the category of the urban, both as a spatial and social product and as an economic and political one, in territories marked by settlement transformation phenomena. In tracking this evolutionary path, this chapter addresses the huge thematic bibliog- raphy on the phenomena of urban regionalisation without any demand for systematic approach but pursuing the aim of tracing the geography of this on-going transition in Sicily.
La Blanca, un asentamiento urbano maya en la cuenca del río Mopán

[EN] The purpose of this paper is to discuss about a recent research carried out at La Blanca, an ancient Mayan settlement in Guatemala. The urban and architectural features of this site reveal us important data about its social and cultural significance, and also about the role it played in the Mopan river basin area. The research methodology as well as La Blanca cultural heritage enhancement has produced results that demonstrated the possibility of conducting social action aimed at promoting economic and cultural developing of neighboring communities.

(in press) took the opportunity offered by our paper to repeat again all the set of ideas supporting an interpretative model of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC), a model they assert to be valid for the whole Mediterranean basin. Human rights-based national climate litigation is a growing phenomenon. In Europe, this type of litigation is essentially based on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, whose human rights obligations are used as a means of interpreting climate obligations of States towards their citizens. The analysis of domestic jurisprudence produces a complex picture. On the one hand, we find elements facilitating access to environmental justice, such as more flexible eligibility criteria and the issuing of immediately enforceable judgments. Abstract The process of Neolithization of Southern Italy and Sicily covers about 500 years (6200–5700 cal BC) and involves two cultural horizons: Archaic Impressed Ware or “Impresse Arcaiche” and Advanced Impressed Ware or “Impresse Evolute”. In Southern Italy the Neolithic peopling from the East is characterized by a “package” of plenty domesticated plants and livestock; in Sicily the adoption of the new economical system is apparently more slow and with no evidences of ruptures between the Mesolithic groups and first farmers. The aim of the Madonie research project is to analyse mobility strategies and the use of a mountainous territory by relating geomorphologic features, raw material sources and landscape to the prehistoric settlement.
