Abstract Vermetid bioconstructions are biogenic formations, built by sessile gastropod molluscs belonging to the family Vermetidae worldwide distributed, occurring in the intertidal and upper subtidal in the rocky shores. In the Mediterranean basin, they occur in complex and tridimensional structures that enhance the local biodiversity, allowing to qualify the structuring species as ecosystem engineers. Stable isotopes and trophic positions of littoral fishes from a Mediterranean Marine Protected Area

Stable isotope analyses were employed to explore feeding and foraging habitats and trophic levels of littoral fishes in a western Mediterranean Marine Protected Area (Egadi Islands, Sicily, Italy). Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were measured in primary producers, invertebrates and fishes collected in December 2001 and January 2002. Fishes of the littoral region of the Egadi Islands had isotopic signatures that fell into a wider range for δ13C (about 6‰) than for δ15N (about 3‰). Geomorphological evolution of the River Loukkos estuary around the Phoenician city of Lixus on the Atlantic Littoral of Morocco

The ancient city of Lixus, today situated on a hill on the right bank of the River Loukkos, 4km from the coast, was founded on the shore of a brackish lagoon that was sheltered from Atlantic storms. This geographical context provided the city with one of the best Phoenician harbors and abundant fishing resources, and allowed access to the Gharb cattle farming resources and cereal production systems. In this study, the historical evolution of the Loukkos estuarine environment is reconstructed through geomorphological and sedimentological analyses, combined with cartographic, archaeological, and geographical data. We explored environmental variables structuring littoral macroinvertebrate communities in a large lake basin along a gradient of nutrient enrichment. Furthermore, we evaluated sensitivity and cost-effi ciency of different sampling schemes (i.e. combinations of three habitat types and a number of standard sampling methods) to detect changes in macroinvertebrate communities along this anthropogenic disturbance gradient. Combined shell growth pattern and oxygen isotope analysis has become a powerful approach in palaeoclimate and archaeological studies for reconstructing palaeoclimate conditions and littoral exploitation patterns, respectively. UNLABELLED HISTORY AND PRE-ADMISSION FINDINGS: Routine abdominal sonography of a 51-year-old man 6 years after removal of the right testis and radiotherapy for a seminoma revealed a 3 cm mass within the spleen. INVESTIGATIONS All biochemical tests were normal. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the tumour which had not been present on the CT before the seminoma had been treated. No other space-occupying lesions were found in the thorax and abdomen. TREATMENT AND COURSE A splenectomy was performed because a metachronous metastasis of the seminoma was suspected. Initiées en 2009, ces recherches ont permis de mettre au jour les vestiges d’un centre artisanal et commercial dont le dynamisme et la prospérité sont exprimés par de nombreux marqueurs dont l’association est rarement documentée en dehors des sanctuaires ou des nécropoles (amphores républicaines, statères, parures en matériaux importés).
