Screening for celiac disease in patients with chronic liver disease
2003
Dear Sir:We read with interest the paper of Kaukinen et al. reporting anelevated frequency of celiac disease (CD) (4.3%) in patients with previousliver transplantation due to severe hepatic dysfunction.1However, wewould like to report our experience of the serologic assays for CDdiagnosis in patients with chronic liver disease and comment on thescreening methods for CD used in that study. Functional gastrointestinal disorders: Dynamic observation of pediatric cases
2015
Introduction: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are a variable set of clinical cases characterized by recurrent/chronic symptoms not associated with an organic pathology. These disorders are classified using the Rome III criteria. Objective: The study wanted to evaluate the prevalence by gender and age of FGIDs in a pediatric population recruited on the basis of recurrent/chronic abdominal pain, and to follow up patients for six months by administering questionnaires aimed at verifying any changes in symptoms. We also evaluated the possible involvement of factors responsible for these changes. Results: 62 patients between 4 and 17 years of age (27 males and 35 females) were inclu…

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Increases the Risk of Anxiety and Depression.
2020
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and anxiety disorders are frequent diseases, and data on mutual influence are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to explore the incidence of depression and anxiety in a large primary care cohort in Germany and to study the impact of NAFLD over a 10‐year time frame. Patients with NAFLD diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 were matched to a cohort without NAFLD controlling for age, sex, physician, index year, and Charlson comorbidity index. The primary outcome of the study was the incidence of depression, anxiety, and first prescription of antidepressant drugs. We compared 19,871 patients with NAFLD to 19,871 matched controls. Within 10 ye…
