Force measurements and tip shape approximation with the atomic force microscope
2011
The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is an instrument with huge impact on modern research in the nanosciences and in nanotechnology. In AFM, a tip which is sharp on a scale of nanometers or tens of nanometers, is scanning along the surface which is imaged. A few among the large numbers of factors that potentially affect the interaction between the tip and the surface were studied in the experimental work that form this Thesis. Friction and elasticity measurements with AFM and the approximation of the tip shape are discussed. Also the contribution of the imaging environment is studied. A commercial AFM was modified into a so called environmental-AFM (env- AFM) , where the imaging conditions, su…

Ultrasound-Guided Infraclavicular Axillary Vein Versus Internal Jugular Vein Cannulation in Critically Ill Mechanically Ventilated Patients: A Random…
2022
OBJECTIVES: This clinical trial aimed to compare the ultrasound-guided in-plane infraclavicular cannulation of the axillary vein (AXV) and the ultrasound-guided out-of-plane cannulation of the internal jugular vein (IJV). DESIGN: A prospective, single-blinded, open label, parallel-group, randomized trial. SETTING: Two university-affiliated ICUs in Poland (Opole and Lublin). PATIENTS: Mechanically ventilated intensive care patients with clinical indications for central venous line placement. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assigned into two groups: the IJV group (n = 304) and AXV group (n = 306). The primary outcome was to compare the IJV group and AXV group through the venipuncture an…
An impaired alveolar-capillary barrier in vitro : effect of proinflammatory cytokines and consequences on nanocarrier interaction.
2009
The alveolar region of the lung is an important target for drug and gene delivery approaches. Treatment with drugs is often necessary under pathophysiological conditions, in which there is acute inflammation of the target organ. Therefore, in vitro models of the alveolar-capillary barrier, which mimic inflammatory conditions in the alveolar region, would be useful to analyse and predict effects of novel drugs on healthy or inflamed tissues. The epithelial cell line H441 was cultivated with primary isolated human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) or the endothelial cell line ISO-HAS-1 on opposite sides of a permeable filter support under physiological and inflammatory condi…
First record of Icerya seychellarum and confirmed occurrence of Aulacaspis tubercularis (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) in Italy
2020
The Seychelles scale, Icerya seychellarum (Westwood, 1855) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Monophlebidae), is reported for the first time in Italy. Moreover, the occurrence of the white mango scale, Aulacaspis tubercularis (Newstead, 1906) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae), firstly reported in 1990 on mango trees growing outdoors in a nursery near Milazzo (Messina province, Sicily), and then intercepted in 2013 on mango plants imported from Florida (USA) to the Botanical Garden in Padova (Italy), is confirmed. Both species were found in two Sicilian mango orchards located in the province of Messina. Their introduction is most likely due to the orchards planting using infested mango nursery pla…

Sella, A NEW NAME FOR THE GENUS Linaresia EL KADIRI, 1992 (NASSELLARIA, RADIOLARIA) PREOCCUPIED BY COPEPOD CRUSTACEANS (LAMIPPIDAE, MAXILLOPODA)
2021
The aim of this short note is to create a new name of this genus since the original name Linaresia proved to pre-exist in the paleontological literature ( Linaresia de Zulueta, 1908, Family Lamippidae, Copepod crustaceans, and Linaresia Gonzalez-Donoso, 1968, Family Gavelinellidae, Agglutinated Foraminifera). The new name created for the above mentioned radiolarians is: Sella . This name derives from an arbitrary combination of letters (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). The type species of Sella is S. beniderkoulensis by original designation (El Kadiri, 1992).
A histological study of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian from southern GEmany, using thin sections and micro-CT scan…
2013
AbstractThe histology of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian, is described on the basis of two supplementary methods: classic thin sectioning and micro-CT scanning. In addition, the effectiveness of high-resolution micro-CT scanning for histological analysis is assessed. A classic, mid-shaft thin section of the femur was prepared, but prior to slicing two micro-CT scans were made. One of these has an image stack of a total of 1,024 images in the horizontal plane and a slice thickness of 87.8 μm, so that the entire bone could be captured, while the second was at mid-shaft region only, yet with a higher resolution of 28.3 μm and an image stack of 787 images in th…
Long bone histology of Metoposaurus diagnosticus (Temnospondyli) from the Late Triassic of Krasiejów (Poland) and its paleobiological implications
2013
ABSTRACT Long bones of the temnospondyl Metoposaurus diagnosticus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Krasiejow, Poland, were studied using histological analysis. Six femora, three humeri, a radius, and an ulna were prepared for thin-sectioning. In all bones, the dominant type of primary bone matrix is parallel-fibered bone with secondary, or rarely primary, deposition of lamellar bone inside vascular canals. Two small humeri and the smallest femur showed incipient fibrolamellar bone, which may be a character typical for juvenile individuals. The medullary region is filled with well-developed trabecular bone. The growth marks in all bones are organized as thick layers of highly vascula…
Effects of intensity and duration of infection by a hemiparasitic plant, Rhinanthus serotinus, on growth and reproduction of a perennial grass, Agros…
1999
Arising from annual variation in parasitic plant population densities, substantial yearly changes may occur in the parasitic load of an individual perennial host. We conducted two two-year greenhouse pot experiments to examine the effects of varying intensities and duration of infection by an annual root hemiparasitic plant, Rhinanthus serotinus, on the growth and reproduction of its perennial host grass, Agrostis capillaris. In the first experiment, one host plant was growing either alone or under a load of 1 or 3 root hemiparasitic plants for one growing season, and during the next season all hosts continued their life free of hemiparasites. In the second experiment, the host plants eithe…
