Cryopreservation of Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) Axillary Buds from In Vitro Shoots Using the Droplet Vitrification Method

2021

Cryopreservation by droplet vitrification was applied to hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.). axillary buds of the Italian cultivated variety Tonda Gentile Romana, which were collected from in vitro growing shoots, immersed in ice cooled PVS2 or PVS3 for 60 or 90 min, then transferred to a droplet of vitrification solution, placed on a strip of aluminium foil, and plunged into liquid nitrogen (LN). Additionally, the effect on the recovery of the mother plant after cryopreservation was evaluated, following a cold pre-treatment at 4 °C for 3 months. The highest regrowth percentage (56.7%) was obtained after applying PVS3 for 60 min, while the application of PVS2 for the same amount of time reduced…

Safety of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in Patients With Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Real-World Use of Lenvatinib and Sorafenib in Korea

2019

Background: Thyroid cancer has become the most common cancer in Korea. Generally, thyroid cancer patients have a good prognosis; however, 15–20% of patients experience recurrence or distant metastasis or are refractory to standard treatment. We assessed the safety of sorafenib and lenvatinib in patients with advanced or metastatic radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC) consecutively treated at a tertiary center in South Korea. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all consecutive patients with DTC treated during ≥6 months with lenvatinib (February 2016–April 2018) and sorafenib (January 2014–April 2018) at Gangnam Severance Hospital. Patients were tre…

III Filar systemu emerytalnego w Polsce - uwarunkowania, struktura oraz tendencje zmian

2018

Metodolog…

Employee Pension Plans as Retirement Saving Form

2020

The forecasts referring to the effectiveness of the system introduced by the law act in 1999 show that the retirement pensions paid in the future from the obligatory part of the system will be low and they will significantly decrease the life level of the pensioners. The forecasted low level of the effectiveness of the new pension system leads to a bigger interest in solutions which can partially reduce the poverty level of the future pensioners. This article is devoted to a new pension saving form, that is Employee Pension Plans (EPP). The goal of this paper is the attempt to answer the question whether the proposed form of saving can have a crucial influence on the pension amount of an av…

Ancient architecture in Provence between the Iron Age and the Imperial era: the pillars of the Château-Bas site in Vernègues

2013

The site of Château-Bas (Vernègues, Bouches-du-Rhône), famous above all for its Augustan Roman temple, has yielded a set of pillars decorated either with writhing snakes or with straight rods. As yet there are no known parallels to such pillars. The discovery of a fragment of a pillar reused in a 1st c. AD structure demonstrates that these carvings are ancient. The architectural study of the fragments and comparison with other sculptural elements from southern Gaul suggest they date approximately to the turn of the millenium. The originality of these pieces should perhaps be sought in the copying and adaptation of Italic architectural features (Attic base, Tuscan capital) to a particular fo…

Shakespeare, Art and Artifice: An Interview with Stuart Sillars

2019

Ahead of the publication of his forthcoming book, Shakespeare Seen: Image, Performance and Society (Cambridge, 2018), Stuart Sillars sat down for an interview with Perry McPartland. The discussion revisited a number of topics that Sillars has explored in his various publications on Shakespeare, including Shakespeare’s aesthetic strategies of transformation, the relationship his work takes to the visual, and the uses to which Shakespeare puts aesthetic artifice. The interview was conducted in two parts over a very nearly adequate Skype connection in the summer of 2018.

Investigating the Structure of Vela X

2018

Vela X is the prototypical example of a pulsar wind nebula whose morphology and detailed structure have been affected by the interaction with the reverse shock of its host supernova remnant. The resulting complex of filamentary structure and mixed-in ejecta embedded in a nebula that is offset from the pulsar provides the best example we have of this middle-age state that characterizes a significant fraction of composite SNRs, and perhaps all of the large-diameter PWNe seen as TeV sources. Here we report on an XMM-Newton Large Project study of Vela X, supplemented by additional Chandra observations. Through broad spectral modeling as well as detailed spectral investigations of discrete emiss…

Un modello realistico per visualizzazioni in didattica

2019

In this work, two applications for the visualization of the aggregation and the solubilization of structureless interacting particles are presented. The applications allow to demonstrate on a qualitative basis as well as by quantitatively monitoring the time evolution of the surface/volume ratio and of the fractions of aggregated particles, that, on the one hand, the growth of nanoaggregates implies a decrease of their surface/volume ratio and, on the other, that the formation of homogeneous mixtures is the result of favorable solute-solvent interactions as well as of temperature. It is suggested that, along with the use of suitable macroscopic examples, visualizations by the present applic…
