The internal calcar septum and its contact with the virtual stem in THR: a computer tomographic evaluation.

The internal calcar septum is a ridge of cortical bone protruding from the inner cortical wall of the proximal femur into the medullary canal. It extends from the lesser trochanter into the femoral neck and narrows the femoral cavity in its dorsal third. This region is essential for THR stability, but the degree of contact between the septum and standard THR implants has never been studied. We obtained CT scans of 50 arthrotic hip joints from patients requiring THR. “Preemptive” Live Donor Liver Transplantation for Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Report

Fibrolamellar (FL) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a distinctive form of primary HCC that occurs principally in children and young adults. Although liver transplantation is not contraindicated for FL-HCC, noncirrhotic patients with large HCC tumors (including FL-HCCs) are not prioritized. Although hepatic resection is considered to be the primary treatment for FL-HCC, living donor liver transplantation is evolving into a potentially better alternative. Herein we have reported successful "preemptive" living donor liver transplantation for presumed recurrence of FL-HCC after an extended right hepatectomy with resection and synthetic graft replacement of the inferior vena cava.

Macular edema computer-aided evaluation in ocular vein occlusions.

This paper is concerned with the use of digital fundus imaging to detect, quantify, and follow up macular angiographic leakage due to retinal vein occlusions. Images were matched automatically. We detected those pixels with a high increment in gray level within the closest area to the foveal center. Binary images displaying leakage were obtained. The procedure was checked against two observers' agreement. Twenty-one angiographic studies were collected. Two images of each sequence were selected for digitalization. The present study describes some of the applications of ultrasound in bone surgery, based on the presentation of two clinical cases. The Piezosurgery® ultrasound device was used (Tecnología Mectron Medical, Carasco, Italy). In one case the instrument was used to harvest a chin bone graft for placement in a bone defect at level 1.2, while in the other case a bony window osteotomy was made in the external wall of the maxillary sinus, in the context of a sinus membrane lift procedure. X-linked hydrocephalus is due to mutations in the L1 neuronal cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) gene. L1 protein plays a key role in neurite outgrowth, axonal guidance, and pathfinding during the development of the nervous system. We report on a familial case diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonographic examination, with cerebellar hypoplasia, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and the bilateral overlapping of the second and third fingers of the hand.
