New Therapeutic Approach for the Treatment of B-Cell Disorders Using Chlorambucil/Hydroxychloroquine-Loaded AntiCD20 Nanoparticles
2012
Abstract Abstract 158 B-cell disorders show highly variable clinical courses, ranging between indolent diseases like the chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and highly aggressive lymphoproliferative disorders like Burkitt Lymphoma. The treatments of these disorders have been characterized by the development of new approaches, including dose-intensive chemotherapy regimens and immunotherapy via monoclonal antibodies (Ab). Despite the promising survival rates, these multi-agent treatments are flawed by a high degree of toxicity and a significant fraction of patients do not respond. The use of core shell nanoparticles design with specific Ab-coating represents a new strategy to target only tumo…
Prospero hierae (Hyacinthaceae), a New Species from Marettimo Island (Sicily)
2009
A new species, Prospero hierae C. Brullo, S. Brullo, Giusso, Pavone & Salmeri (Hyacinthaceae), from Island of Marettimo (Egadi Archipelago, Sicily) is described and illustrated. Its chromosome number (2n = 14), leaf anatomy and ecology are examined. This small species with glaucous, adaxially flat leaves is closely related with the taxa belonging to the Prospero autumnale group and, in particular, it shows more affinities with P. corsicum, P. pulchellum and P. minimum.
Reversible radiculomyelitis after ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination
2022
Adverse events occurring after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination have been reported and are the subject of ongoing research. We present the case of a young woman with fully reversible radiculomyelitis, which happened after the first dose of the ChAdOx1 nCOVID-19 vaccine. A previously healthy woman in her 20s presented with a subacute onset of legs’ weakness and sensory disturbances, urinary dysfunction and cramping pain after receiving the first dose of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine. A diagnostic workup led to the diagnosis of inflammatory radiculomyelitis. Her clinical status improved, with complete recovery after a few months. The case described a reversible radiculomyelitis associated with the ChAdOx…

Bacteria Associated with Copestylum (Diptera, Syrphidae) Larvae and Their Cactus Host Isolatocereus dumortieri
2011
We describe the gut bacterial diversity inhabiting two saprophagous syrphids and their breeding substrate (decayed tissues of the columnar cactus Isolatocereus dumortieri). We analyzed the gut microbiota of Copestylum latum (scooping larvae that feed on decayed cactus tissues) and Copestylum limbipenne (whose larvae can also feed on semiliquid tissues) using molecular techniques. DNA was extracted from larval guts and cactus tissues. The V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA genes was amplified and sequenced. A total of 31079 sequences were obtained. The main findings are: C. limbipenne is dominated by several Enterobacteriaceae, including putative nitrogen-fixing genera and pectinolitic species and…

Phenolic compounds and abscisic acid as potential markers for the floral origin of two Polish unifloral honeys
2012
The phenolic profiles of Polish honey samples from heather (Calluna vulgaris L.) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.) were determined. The phenolic components were isolated from honey samples using Amberlite-XAD-2 as a solid-phase extraction sorbent. For the determination of the composition of the honey extracts HPLC with photodiode array detector was applied. Identification and quantification of phenolics was performed by comparison of their retention times and UV spectra with those of standard solutions of pure reference substances and by using those references as external standards. From among 20 commercially available standards over 15 of them were identified as present in all analys…
Chemometrics as a Tool of Origin Determination of Polish Monofloral and Multifloral Honeys
2014
The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of chemometrics studies to determine the botanical origin of Polish monofloral honeys using NMR spectroscopy. Aqueous extracts of six kinds of honeys, namely, heather (Calluna vulgaris L.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L), lime (Tilia L), rape (Brassica napus L. var. napus), acacia (Acacia Mill.), and multifloral ones, were analyzed. Multivariate chemometric data analysis was performed using principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). Chemometric analysis supported by pollen analysis revealed the incorrect classification of acacia honeys by the producers. Characteristic moti…
THE MEDITERRANEAN AS SOURCE OF ORNAMENTAL
2013
Cultivation of plants for ornamental purposes throughout the Mediterranean dates back to deep antiquity. In fact Egyptian, Greek, Roman and other previous myths are pervaded with correlations among humans, gods and plants either useful or ornamental – whose names such as hyacinth, narcissus, and many others that are still common. In that period almost all of the ornamental flora was native to the Mediterranean and next countries, having been the flow from other territories irrelevant up to the Renaissance. From XVI century on, the whole Mediterranean ornamental heritage was gradually spread throughout the new discovered territories, and from there a huge number of plants was introduced to M…
