Unexpected Formation of a 1,2-Dichloroacenaphthylene in a Friedel-Crafts Reaction with Chloral Hydrate
2012
An unprecedented rearrangement was encountered during an attempted alkylation of an electron-rich naphthalene with chloral hydrate. The reaction produced a dichlorinated acenaphthylene and presumably involves the intermediate formation of a chloronium ion which is opened to produce the five-membered ring of the final product.
Hexanuclear Cu3O–3Cu triazole-based units as novel core motifs for high nuclearity copper(ii) frameworks
2019
The asymmetric 3,5-disubstituted 1,2,4-triazole ligand H2V (5-amino-3-picolinamido-1,2,4-triazole) by reaction with an excess of Cu(II) perchlorate (Cu : H2V being 12 : 1) has produced a novel hexanuclear {Cu6(m3-O/H)(HV/V)3} fragment, with one triangular Cu3(m3-O/H) group connected to three peripheral single Cu(II) ions through a cis–cis–trans bridging mode of the ligand, which is the building block of the three structures described here: one hexanuclear, [Cu6(m3-O)(HV)3(ClO4)7(H2O)9]$8H2O (1), one dodecanuclear, [Cu12(m3-O)2(V)6(ClO4)5(H2O)18](ClO4)3$6H2O (2), and one tetradecanuclear 1D-polymer, {[Cu14(m3-OH)2(V)6(HV)(ClO4)11(H2O)20](ClO4)2$14H2O}n (3), the last two containing hexanuclea…
Conductance in isodielectric mixtures. III.i-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dichlorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol
1975
The conductance of tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylboride, picrate, perchlorate, and nitrate has been measured at 25°C in mixtures ofi-butyronitrile with chlorobenzene,o-dichlorobenzene,p-dicholorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, andn-pentanol covering the range of dielectric constants 10≤D≤20. In these mixtures of polar solvents, both association constants and ionic mobilities depend on ion-solvent interaction energies and on free volume in a manner that is specific for each system. This failure of the primitive model (rigid charged spheres in a continuum) is shown to be the consequence of short-range spatial and energetic interactions between ions and adjacent solvent molecules.
Supramolecular 2D/3D isomerism in a compound containing heterometallic Cu(II)2Co(II) nodes and dicyanamide bridges.
2014
Three new heterometallic copper(II)-cobalt(II) complexes [(CuL(2))2Co{dca}2]·H2O(1), [(CuL(1))2Co{dca}2]n (2a), and [(CuL(1))2Co{dca}2]n (2b) [dca(-) = dicyanamide = N(CN)2(-)] have been synthesized by reacting the "metallo-ligand" [CuL(1)] or [CuL(2)] with cobalt(II) perchlorate and sodium dicyanamide in methanol-water medium (where H2L(1) = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine and H2L(2) = N,N'-bis(α-methylsalicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine). The three complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. Complex 1 is a discrete trinuclear species in which two metallo-ligands coordinate to a cobalt(II) ion through the phenoxido oxygen atoms along with two terminally coordina…
ChemInform Abstract: Formation in Solution, Synthesis and Crystal Structure of μ-Oxalatobis(bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amido)dicopper(II).
1989
Abstract The compound μ-oxalatobis[bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amido] dicopper(II), [Cu 2 {(NCsH 5 CO) 2 N} 2 - (C 2 O 4 )] was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopy, EPR and diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 with cell constants: a =7.6793(6), b =9.238(2), c =10.007(2) A, α=83.80(1), β=68.37(1) and γ=69.44(1)°; V =617.7(3) A 3 , D (calc., Z =2)=1.80 g cm −3 , M r =667.6, F (000)=336, λ, (Mo Kα)=0.71069 A, μ (Mo Kα)=17.895 cm −1 and T =295 K. A total of 3587 data were collected over the range of 1 ⩽ θ ⩽ 30°; of these, 2391 (independent and with I⩾2σ( I )) were used in the structural analysis. The final R and R w residuals were 0.049 and 0.053, respective…

Walking Children Through a Minefield: How Professionals Experience Exploring Adverse Childhood Experiences
2017
Understanding the challenges of professionals in addressing child adversity is key to improving the detection, protection, and care of exposed children. We aimed to synthesize findings from qualitative studies of professionals’ lived experience of addressing child adversity. Through a systematic search, we identified eight qualitative studies and synthesized them using metaethnography. We generated three themes, “feeling inadequate,” “fear of making it worse,” and “facing evil,” and one overarching metaphor, “walking children through a minefield.” The professionals felt that they lacked the means necessary to explore child adversity, that they were apprehensive of worsening the child’s situ…
Chloracne after release of TCDD at Seveso, Italy
1981
ABSTRACT The paper deals with clinical and epidemiological findings concerning persons showing skin lesions after release of TCDD at Seveso. A positive association was observed between geographical distribution of cases and levels of soil contamination. Gastro-intestinal tract impairments were more frequently observed in children with chloracne than in children from the same areas showing no skin lesions. To date, no major immunological involvement has been observed in samples of children exposed to TCDD.
p53 is involved in regulation of the DNA repair gene O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) by DNA damaging agents
1998
The DNA repair protein O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is inducible by genotoxic stress. MGMT induction results from transcriptional activation of the MGMT gene which is a specific response to DNA damage. A possible factor involved in triggering MGMT induction might be p53, because both p53 and MGMT are activated by DNA breaks. To study the effect of p53 on induction of the MGMT gene, we compared the presence of functional wild-type (wt) and mutant p53 with MGMT expression level in various mouse fibroblasts and rat hepatoma cell lines upon genotoxic treatment. Cells which responded to ionizing radiation (IR) by MGMT induction displayed functional p53, whereas in cells not expr…
Binding of Tat Protein to TAR Region of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Blocks TAR-Mediated Activation of (2′-5′)Oligoadenylate Synthetase
1990
The TAR sequence of the 5' leader of HIV-1 long terminal repeat-directed mRNA was found to be able to bind to and to activate double-stranded RNA-dependent (2'-5')A synthetase. Binding of TAR to the purified synthetase in vitro was abolished by addition of HIV-1 Tat protein, which binds to this sequence with a high affinity. Inhibition of TAR-mediated activation of (2'-5')A synthetase by Tat was prevented in the presence of the Zn2+ and Cd2+ chelators o-phenanthroline and penicillamine, which did not impair TAR-synthetase interaction. Transient expression assays of bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene in HeLa cells revealed that the levels of both CAT mRNA and CAT protein …
