Understanding the impact of the EU-led urban initiatives on city-making: evidences from the case of Palermo (Italy)
Southern Italy – the “Italian Mezzogiorno” – is recognised as one of the most controversial case for regional development in the European Union (Leonardi, 2005; Piattoni and Polverari, 2016). Within this broad geographical unit, home of around one third of the country’s population, after thirty years from the reform of the structural funds that in 1988 reshaped Cohesion policy, large regions such as Campania and Sicily have never changed their status of ‘less developed regions’. Major urban areas within these regions, therefore, reflect – and to some extent are an expression of – all the development questions the EU’s regional policy has aimed to address from the beginning: infrastructures …
LA QUESTIONE DELLA VALUTAZIONE DELLE PERFORMANCE DI SVILUPPO LOCALE NEI GAL. UN APPROCCIO GEOGRAFICO
2019
This paper aims to advance a critical review of a LAG’s Local Development Strategy. This paper is methodologically based on the geographical qualitative approach; moving from the debate about the local development, the contribution tackles a case study and proposes an initial reflection on the possible approaches to the evaluation of the performance of LAG policies in the territory.
MARGINALITÀ E COVID 19: RIPENSARE IL TURISMO?
2020
The contribution aims to help open a reflection on the impact that the pandemic has had on the implementation of tourism enhancement strategies in marginal areas and at the same time raise a question relating to the next European programming. LEADER planning experiences are then taken into consideration and, in particular, the local development strategies prepared by the LAGs and their evaluation. In Sicily, the LAGs' SSLTPs, in the 2013-2020 programming period, in fact had a strategic hub in sustainable tourism. In this sense, Belìce represents the significant case study that is analyzed in order to advance, in an ongoing and fully open debate, a reflection that looks forward from continge…
Il bosco in aree interne. Risorsa locale o paesaggio ludico?
2021
This communication intends to represent a preliminary survey of the characteristics, envisaged by the new European Programming, of the programmatic synergies that …
Compliance with the rules and partnerships engagement as determinants of good governance: an analysis of the experiences of local development in Italy
2012

Urban areas are becoming important units for territorial cohesion policy and strategic planning represents more and more an important policy instrument. Methods and Results This study uses multidimensional scaling and rank-size regressions across Sicilian Functional Urban Areas (FUA) as well as descriptive information drawn from strategic plans in order to identify …
Developing IRT Approach in the Area of Central Southern Sicily Through Governance and Strategic Planning
2010
The paper presents a case study concerning the development of IRT approach in the area of central southern Sicily, the ample portion of territory surrounding Agrigento and its Archeological Area known as “The Valley of Temples”. This has been inscribed in the Unesco List of World Heritage in 1997, due to the fact that Agrigento was one of the greatest cities of the ancient Mediterranean world, and it has been preserved in an exceptionally intact condition. Its great row of Doric temples is one of the most outstanding monuments of Greek art and culture. Despite this uncommon characteristic, touristic development in the area is still latent and the “Valley” has become somehow a bulky presence…
