Mapping surface plasmon propagation by collection-mode near-field microscopy

2011

Surface plasmon propagation along striped Gold structures has been investigated by collection-mode near-field microscopy, leading to map the field intensity at the structure surface and to assess the system behavior at the nanoscale.

Chapter 3 Surface Plasmon Optics for the Characterization of Biofunctional Architectures

2007

Publisher Summary This chapter describes a wide variety of work employing surface plasmon resonance (SPR), surface plasmon field-enhanced fluorescence spectroscopy (SPFS), and surface plasmon field-enhanced diffraction spectroscopy (SPDS) analysis, specifically for investigations relevant to biofunctional, bio-affinity aspects. The SPR has shown already its impact on interfacial analysis. The combination of these three methods has the potential to generate more information and reveal details of biofunctional interfaces. The versatility of the SPR technique is shown by a vast amount of publications in the past decades; the method has matured into a well-accepted analytical tool for the chara…

Curvature effects in surface plasmon dispersion and coupling

2005

We have studied the resonant coupling of surface plasmons in curved thin-film tunneling geometries by obtaining the dispersion relations for the system. The surface plasmon dispersion relations are calculated for a metal-coated dielectric probe above a dielectric half space with and without metal coating. The system is modeled in the prolate spheroidal system, and the dispersion relations are studied as functions of the parameter that defines the boundaries of the tip and the corresponding coating, and as functions of the involved coating thicknesses. Using this type of probe-substrate configuration, the nonradiative surface plasmon coupling mechanism is investigated in the visible spectrum…

Differential method for modeling dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides

2008

This paper demonstrates the efficiency of the differential method, a conventional grating theory, to investigate dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs), known to be a potential solution for optical interconnects. The method is used to obtain the mode effective indices (both real and imaginary parts) and the mode profiles. The results obtained with the differential method are found to be in good agreement with those provided by the effective index method or finite elements. The versatility of the differential method is demonstrated by considering complex configurations such as trapezoidal waveguides or DLSPPWs lying on a finite width metal stripe.

Control of surface plasmon resonances in dielectrically coated proximate gold nanoparticles immobilized on a substrate

2008

We present experimental and theoretical results for the changes in the optical-plasmon resonance of gold-nanoparticle dimers immobilized on a surface when coated with an organic dielectric material. The plasmon band of a nanoparticle dimer shifts to a higher wavelength when the distance between neighboring particles is decreased, and a well-separated second peak appears. This phenomenon is called cross-talk. We find that an organic coating lets cross-talk start at larger separation distances than for uncoated dimers by bridging the gap between immobilized nanoparticles (creating optical clusters). We study this optical clustering effect as a function of the polarization of the applied light…

Propagation length enhancement of surface plasmon polaritons in gold nano-/micro-waveguides by the interference with photonic modes in the surroundin…

2017

Abstract In this work, the unique optical properties of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), i.e. subwavelength confinement or strong electric field concentration, are exploited to demonstrate the propagation of light signal at 600 nm along distances in the range from 17 to 150 μm for Au nanostripes 500 nm down to 100 nm wide (30 nm of height), respectively, both theoretically and experimentally. A low power laser is coupled into an optical fiber tip that is used to locally excite the photoluminescence of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) dispersed in their surroundings. Emitted light from these QDs is generating the SPPs that propagate along the metal waveguides. Then, the above-referred propagat…

Self-assembled metal-oxide nanoparticles on GaAs: infrared absorption enabled by localized surface plasmons

2021

Abstract Metal-oxides hold promise as superior plasmonic materials in the mid-infrared compared to metals, although their integration over established material technologies still remains challenging. We demonstrate localized surface plasmons in self-assembled, hemispherical CdZnO metal-oxide nanoparticles on GaAs, as a route to enhance the absorption in mid-infrared photodetectors. In this system, two localized surface plasmon modes are identified at 5.3 and 2.7 μm, which yield an enhancement of the light intensity in the underlying GaAs. In the case of the long-wavelength mode the enhancement is as large as 100 near the interface, and persists at depths down to 50 nm. We show numerically t…

Strong coupling between surface plasmon polaritons and β-carotene in nanolayered system.

2013

In this article we experimentally demonstrate the strong coupling between surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and the S(2) state of β-carotene. The SPPs are excited by prism coupling technique on a thin silver film with β-carotene embedded in a polymer layer on top of that. Rabi splittings with energies 80 and 130 meV are observed in the recorded dispersion relations. Both coupled oscillator model and transfer matrix method are used to fit the experimental results. The scattered radiation of the propagating strongly coupled SPP-S(2) hybrids is collected and an increase of the low energy splitting to 120 meV is observed compared to the reflectivity data. In addition, we performed molecule excit…

Vacuum Rabi splitting for surface plasmon polaritons and Rhodamine 6G molecules

2011

We report on strong coupling between surface-plasmon polaritons and Rhodamine 6G molecules at room temperature. As a reference to compare with, we first determine the dispersion curve of (uncoupled) surface plasmon polaritons on a 50 nm thick film of silver. Consequently, we determine the dispersion curve of surface plasmon polaritons strongly coupled to Rhodamine 6G molecules, which exhibits vacuum Rabi splitting. Depending on the Rhodamine 6G concentration, we find splitting energies between 0.05 eV and 0.13 eV.
