Posterior moments and quantiles for the normal location model with Laplace prior
2021
We derive explicit expressions for arbitrary moments and quantiles of the posterior distribution of the location parameter η in the normal location model with Laplace prior, and use the results to approximate the posterior distribution of sums of independent copies of η.
Sequential estimation of a location parameter and powers of a scale parameter from delayed observations
2013
The problem of sequentially estimating a location parameter and powers of a scale parameter is considered in the case when the observations become available at random times. Certain classes of sequential estimation procedures are derived under an invariant balanced loss function and with the observation cost determined by a convex function of the stopping time and the number of observations up to that time.
Designing and pricing guarantee options in defined contribution pension plans
2015
Abstract The shift from defined benefit (DB) to defined contribution (DC) is pervasive among pension funds, due to demographic changes and macroeconomic pressures. In DB all risks are borne by the provider, while in plain vanilla DC all risks are borne by the beneficiary. However, for DC to provide income security some kind of guarantee is required. A minimum guarantee clause can be modeled as a put option written on some underlying reference portfolio and we develop a discrete model that selects the reference portfolio to minimize the cost of a guarantee. While the relation DB–DC is typically viewed as a binary one, the model shows how to price a wide range of guarantees creating a continu…
Some Remarks on Exponential Families
1987
Abstract The following facts may serve to provide a feeling about how restrictive the assumption of an exponential family is. (a) A one-parameter exponential family in standard form with respect to Lebesgue measure is a location parameter family iff it is normal with fixed variance. (b) It is a scale parameter family iff it is gamma with fixed shape parameter. Both facts are known (see Borges and Pfanzagl 1965; Ferguson 1962; Lindley 1958) but may not have received as much attention as they deserve. Under the assumption of differentiable densities, short and elementary proofs are given.
Sample size in cluster-randomized trials with time to event as the primary endpoint
2011
In cluster-randomized trials, groups of individuals (clusters) are randomized to the treatments or interventions to be compared. In many of those trials, the primary objective is to compare the time for an event to occur between randomized groups, and the shared frailty model well fits clustered time-to-event data. Members of the same cluster tend to be more similar than members of different clusters, causing correlations. As correlations affect the power of a trial to detect intervention effects, the clustered design has to be considered in planning the sample size. In this publication, we derive a sample size formula for clustered time-to-event data with constant marginal baseline hazards…

Balanced difficulty task finder: an adaptive recommendation method for learning tasks based on the concept of state of flow
2020
An adaptive task difficulty assignment method which we reckon as balanced difficulty task finder (BDTF) is proposed in this paper. The aim is to recommend tasks to a learner using a trade-off between skills of the learner and difficulty of the tasks such that the learner experiences a state of flow during the learning. Flow is a mental state that psychologists refer to when someone is completely immersed in an activity. Flow state is a multidisciplinary field of research and has been studied not only in psychology, but also neuroscience, education, sport, and games. The idea behind this paper is to try to achieve a flow state in a similar way as Elo’s chess skill rating (Glickman in Am Ches…
Strategic Asset Building and Competitive Strategies for SMEs which Compete with Industry Giants
2014
This chapter studies companies which are arguably business super-heroes – the small firms which despite the apparent handicap of very limited resources are able to compete against much larger, multinational firms – the micro-giants Davids that take on Goliaths. Through a process of detailed case studies of actual firms, analysis of asset structure, and experiments with a simulation model, the relationships between key assets, critical success factors, and micro-giant competiveness are explored. The model produces six scenarios reflecting different strategies for developing tangible and intangible assets and, critically, the balance between them. A level of aggression is needed in asset buil…
Jubilación parcial y contrato de relevo: regulación y prospectiva
2022
Formation of dislocation patterns: Computer simulations
1996
Dislocations patterns have been extensively studied by means of TEM. In parallel, theoretical approaches have been developed by using two methods; reaction diffusion schemes and computer simulation models. This distinction is not rigid since some computer models include the former approach in their evolution equations. Independently from the difficulties each approach presents in formulating the collective behavior of dislocations, the aim of these studies is to exhibit simple dislocation patterns as persistent slip bands and/or cellular organization. In this context, computer simulations brought a methodology which undoubtedly is a complement to the existing approaches for dislocations. Ne…
