The cavity-nest ant

2014

Colonies of the ant Temnothorax crassispinus inhabit mostly cavities in wood and hollow acorns. Typically in the field, nest sites that can be used by the ant are a limited resource. In a field experiment, it was investigated whether the ants prefer a specific size of nest, when different ones are available. In July 2011, a total of 160 artificial nests were placed in a beech-pine forest. Four artificial nests (pieces of wood with volume cavities, ca 415, 605, 730, and 980 mm3, respectively) were located on each square meter of the experimental plot. One year later, shortly before the emergence of new sexuals, the nests were collected. In July 2012, colonies inhabited more frequently bigger…

Social Animation in Complex Environments

2007

This work presents a market-based social model to produce good quality behavioral animations for groups of intelligent virtual agents. The social model coordinates the activities of groups of virtual characters and also includes social actions in the agent decision-making. We follow the Multi-Agent Resource Allocation approach presented in [2], where agents express their preferences using utility functions. The dynamics of social interactions is inspired by the theory of Piaget [3] over which we have implemented reciprocal task exchanges.

A Computational Technique for Solving Singularly Perturbed Delay Partial Differential Equations

2021

Abstract In this work, a matrix method based on Laguerre series to solve singularly perturbed second order delay parabolic convection-diffusion and reaction-diffusion type problems involving boundary and initial conditions is introduced. The approximate solution of the problem is obtained by truncated Laguerre series. Moreover convergence analysis is introduced and stability is explained. Besides, a test case is given and the error analysis is considered by the different norms in order to show the applicability of the method.

Location of navigation menus in websites: an experimental study with Arabic users

2015

Published online: 31 October 2015 While Arabic users represent by far the fastest growing language population on the Internet, research about how the peculiarities of Arabic language may shape users’ web interactions is still scarce. The preferences of Arabic users for menu location in websites have been studied. Two competing arguments have been proposed regarding the best location of menus in websites: conventional design (navigation menu should be placed on that side where users expect it based on previous experience) and reading direction (navigation menu should be placed on that side where readers are used to start off reading, so that the navigation menu is likely to be attended first…

From user-generated data to data-driven innovation: A research agenda to understand user privacy in digital markets

2021

Abstract In recent years, strategies focused on data-driven innovation (DDI) have led to the emergence and development of new products and business models in the digital market. However, these advances have given rise to the development of sophisticated strategies for data management, predicting user behavior, or analyzing their actions. Accordingly, the large-scale analysis of user-generated data (UGD) has led to the emergence of user privacy concerns about how companies manage user data. Although there are some studies on data security, privacy protection, and data-driven strategies, a systematic review on the subject that would focus on both UGD and DDI as main concepts is lacking. There…

Incentive Mechanism for Resource Allocation in Wireless Virtualized Networks with Multiple Infrastructure Providers

2020

To accommodate the explosively growing demands for mobile traffic service, wireless network virtualization is proposed as the main evolution towards 5G. In this work, a novel contract theoretic incentive mechanism is proposed to study how to manage the resources and provide services to the users in the wireless virtualized networks. We consider that the infrastructure providers (InPs) own the physical networks and the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has the service information of the users and needs to lease the physical radio resources for providing services. In particular, we utilize the contract theoretic approach to model the resource trading process between the MVNO and multiple…

On the stability of spline-collocation methods of multivalue type

1987

In this paper the general classV of spline-collocation methods for first order systems of ordinary differential equations is investigated. The methods can in part be regarded as so-called multivalue methods. This type contains the generalized singly-implicit methods treated by Butcher.

A-stable spline-collocation methods of multivalue type

1989

In this paper the general classV of spline-collocation methods presented by Multhei is investigated. The methods ofV approximate solutions of first order initial value problems. ClassV contains as subclass the methods of so-called multivalue type, and in particular contains the generalized singly-implicit methods treated by Butcher.
