Impact of Heavy Metals in Eggs and Tissues of C. caretta along the Sicilian Coast (Mediterranean Sea)

In this study we compared the heavy metal concentration found in different tissues and eggs of the loggerhead sea turtle and evaluated the potential ecotoxicological risk for this important species. Eighteen heavy metal elements were determined in different tissues (liver, gonads, fat, kidney, heart, brain, and spleen) of nine individuals of Caretta caretta found stranded along the coasts of Messina (Sicily, Italy) and in the shell and yolk of six eggs from the island of Linosa (Sicily, Italy). A comparative thermogravimetric study of waterlogged archaeological and sound woods

Waterlogged archaeological woods Pinus pinaster and Fagus sylvatica L. were analyzed by using TG technique. Degradation processes ascribable to the holocellulose decay were evidenced at nearly the same temperature for sound and archaeological samples. The residual matters at 600 and 900 °C of the sound woods are much lower than those of archaeological waterlogged woods in agreement with the presence of inorganic materials encapsulated during the burial into the marine environment. We have designed an innovative protocol for the consolidation of waterlogged archaeological woods by using acetone mixtures of halloysite clay nanotubes and a chemically modified colophony (Rosin). Firstly, we have investigated the thermal properties of HNTs/Rosin nanocomposites, which have been prepared by means of the casting method from acetone. The HNTs content have been systematically changed in order to study the influence of the inorganic filler on the thermal stability and glass transition process of Rosin.
