The HyPlant imaging spectrometer is a high-performance airborne instrument consisting of two sensor modules. The DUAL module records hyperspectral data in the spectral range from 400–2500 nm, which is useful to derive biochemical and structural plant properties. In parallel, the FLUO module acquires data in the red and near infrared range (670–780 nm), with a distinctly higher spectral sampling interval and finer spectral resolution. The technical specifications of HyPlant FLUO allow for the retrieval of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), a small signal emitted by plants, which is directly linked to their photosynthetic efficiency. The combined use of both HyPlant modules opens up …

Evaluation of the S-NPP VIIRS land surface temperature product using ground data acquired by an autonomous system at a rice paddy

2018

Abstract The S-NPP VIIRS Land Surface Temperature (LST) product attained the stage V1 of validation maturity (provisional validated) at the end of 2014. This paper evaluates the current VIIRS V1 LST product versus concurrent ground data acquired at a rice paddy site from December 2014 to August 2016. The experimental site has three different seasonal and homogeneous land covers through the year, which makes the site interesting for validation activities. An autonomous and multiangular system was used to record continuous ground data at the site. The data acquired at zenith angles similar to the VIIRS viewing angles were used for the validation to avoid possible differences between satellite…

Active tectonics along the south east offshore margin of Mt. Etna: New insights from high-resolution seismic profiles

2018

The offshore margin of Mt. Etna has been shaped by Middle Pleistocene to Holocene shortening and extension and, more recently, by gravity-related sliding of the volcanic edifice. These processes have acted contemporaneously although the gravitational component largely prevails over the tectonic one. In order to investigate this issue, we focused on the main role of active tectonics along the south-eastern offshore of Mt. Etna by means of marine high-resolution seismic data. Seismic profiles revealed post-220 ka sedimentary deposits unconformably overlaying the Lower-Middle Pleistocene Etnean clayey substratum and volcanics of the Basal Tholeiitic phase and the Timpe phase. Offshore Aci Trez…

Climate change policies and agendas: facing implementation challenges and guiding responses

2020

Climate policies are essential to mitigate climate change and to develop successful adaptation processes. However, there is a paucity of international studies that analyse the status of climate change policies. This paper reports on research undertaken in a sample of 13 highly diverse countries, in regards to their geography, socioeconomic development, vulnerability elements, adaptation, and climate-risks. The results draw attention to the global spread and standardisation of climate change policies, namely through the adoption of comprehensive National Adaptation Plans/Strategies (NAPs/NASs) that include mitigation measures and evaluation mechanisms. Although NAPs tend to take into account…

A Participatory Agrobiodiversity Conservation Approach in the Oases: Community Actions for the Promotion of Sustainable Development in Fragile Areas

2021

Rural development policies today include significant directions towards ecological transition and sustainability. Biodiversity plays a fundamental role, especially in fragile environments. The North African oases, for example, are socio-ecological structures with delicate balances in terms of natural resources, where the activation of participatory conservation approaches appears today to be very useful, aiming at long-lasting results. This type of approach was applied in the oasis of El Hamma, in Tunisia. The socio-ecological analysis was carried out through semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders of the oasis. The results were used to activate focus groups and to identify, …

Remote sensing algorithms for estimation of fractional vegetation cover using pure vegetation index values: A review

2020

Abstract Green fractional vegetation cover ( f c ) is an important phenotypic factor in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and ecology. Spatially explicit monitoring of f c via relative vegetation abundance (RA) algorithms, especially those based on scaled maximum/minimum vegetation index (VI) values, has been widely investigated in remote sensing research. Although many studies have explored the effectiveness of RA algorithms over the past 30 years, a literature review summarizing the corresponding theoretical background, issues, current state-of-the-art techniques, challenges, and prospects has not yet been published. The overall objective of the present study was to accomplish a compre…

SMOS-IC : a revised SMOS product based on a new effective scattering albedo and soil roughness parameterization

2017

International audience; This study presents a new SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) soil moisture (SM) product based on a different scattering albedo and soil roughness parameterization: the SMOS-IC (SMOS INRA-CESBIO) data set. In this study, several parameterizations of the vegetation and soil roughness parameters (co, H-R and N-RP, P = H, V) were tested and the retrieved SM was compared against in situ observations obtained from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). Firstly, values of omega = 0.10, H-R = 0.4 and N-RP = -1 (P = H, V) were found globally. Secondly, a calibration of these parameters was obtained for the different land cover categories of the International Geo…

Stage–Discharge Relationship for an Upstream Inclined Grid with Transversal Bars

2016

AbstractCheck dams with grids upgrading upstream are often used in mountain rivers, where intense sediment transport and steep slopes occur. In some cases, sloping grids are used in the construction of debris flow breakers. In this paper, the outflow process of an upstream-inclined grid with transversal bars is studied by using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. Next, the theoretical analysis shows that a power equation can be used for establishing the stage-discharge equation. The coefficient of the power equation depends on both the slope angle and the void ratio, whereas the exponent depends only on the slope angle. Finally, this deduced stage–discharge r…
