Connections of Science Capital and the Teaching and Learning of Mathematical Modelling: An Introduction

2020

This chapter is an introduction to the theoretical concept of science capital. It also serves as an introduction to the next three chapters of this book. These ensuing chapters all connect mathematical modelling education to science capital. In short, science capital is a set of resources that offer people advantages within scientific contexts. For example, a friend who works in research can be a resource to better understand the gist of science. Not all people have such friends, and the underlying sociological theory of Bourdieu explains how inequities are caused by some people having better access to science capital than others. In this chapter, we explain how the concept of science capit…

Consumption, Sociology of

2001

The sociology of consumption is as old as sociology itself. Its methodological roots lie in the first surveys, which focused on food consumption and were conducted in the middle of the nineteenth century. The aim was to define the level of minimum wage that was high enough to sustain the reproduction of the labor force. However, the prevailing, genuinely sociological approach to consumption is related strongly to the classical period of sociology, when Marx formulated his theory of commodities and commodity fetishism, when Simmel presented his theories of money, style, and fashion, and when Veblen formulated his trickle-down theory. All of these trains of thought were also present in the mi…

Social Inequalities in French Secondary Schools : From Figures to Theories

1996

In spite of the unified type of junior secondary school (the "college") implemented in France since 1975, significant social inequalities of school careers can be observed today. A specific longitudinal study sheds some light on the variety of mechanisms which generate these social inequalities. Difference in academic progress is one mechanism, but parents' strategies are also important. Finally, another aspect of social inequality arises from the school attended, some schools being more selective at the streaming points, these "school effects' being related to the social characteristics of the pupils of the catchment area. All these facts and figures have some relevance with regard to diff…

Emotional Dimensions of User Experience ? A User Psychological Analysis

2014

User psychology is a human–technology interaction research approach that uses psychological concepts, theories, and findings to structure problems of human–technology interaction. As the notion of user experience has become central in human–technology interaction research and in product development, it is necessary to investigate the user psychology of user experience. This analysis of emotional human–technology interaction is based on the psychological theory of basic emotions. Three studies, two laboratory experiments, and one field study are used to investigate the basic emotions and the emotional mind involved in user experience. The first and second experiments study the measurement of…

Degrowth, the past, the future, and the human nature

2012

Abstract In the last years, different sources point to a same message: industrial civilization has entered an overshoot mode, the natural limits to growth have been already surpassed. This frontier does not wait for us in the future; it already belongs to our past. If population and the economy are truly beyond the limits, then current visions and theories of social change would be deeply perturbed. If the development era is approaching its end, then many sociological theories on current societies will share the same destiny, sustainable development doctrines between them. It is worth to examine theories that explicitly look at the social world this way or that – at least – are not incompat…

Bridging probability and calculus: the case of continuous distributions and integrals at the secondary-tertiary transition

2018

International audience; This paper focuses on two mathematical topics, namely continuous probability distributions (CPD) and integral calculus (IC). These two sectors that are linked by the formula P(a<=X<=b)=int_a^b f(x)dx are quite compartmented in teaching classes in France. The main objective is to study whether French students can mobilize the sector of IC to solve tasks in CPD and vice versa at the transition from high school to higher education. Applying the theoretical framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), we describe a reference epistemological model (REM) and use it to elaborate a questionnaire in order to test the capacity of students to bridge CPD and IC…

Constructing the Moral Order of a Relationship in Couples Therapy

2016

Although couples therapy is rightly seen as one modality of the psychotherapies, many salient aspects of the process are not revealed by psychological theory. These have to do with how, in therapeutic conversations, the couple relationship is presented and performed as a social institution with a particular social and moral order. The moral order of a relationship includes more or less articulated and shared understandings of what is valued and what is not, what are the loyalties, duties, and responsibilities expected from the partners, and the grounds for evaluating actions. It also includes expectations concerning how value, concern, and respect are communicated. In this case study, based…

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) as an Emergent System: A Dynamic Systems Theory Perspective

2016

This paper sets out to present a novel construal of one of the notions of Vygotskian cultural-historical theory viz., zone of proximal development (ZPD) drawing upon dynamic systems theory. The principal thesis maintains that ZDP is an emergent and dynamic system which is engendered by a dialectical concatenation of psychogenesic and sociogenesic facets of human development over time. It is reasoned that Vygotskian cultural-historical theory of human development, by invoking dialectical logic, has transcended Cartesian substance dualism and in turn has proffered a monistic and process-anchored ontology for emerging becoming of human consciousness. Likewise, it is contended that dynamic syst…

Psychological correlates of physical activity and exercise preferences in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan cancer survivors

2021

Objective Interventions to increase physical activity (PA) in cancer survivors have often adopted a ‘one‐size‐fits‐all’ approach, and may benefit from being tailored to psychological constructs associated with behavior. The study objective was to investigate the exercise preferences and psychological constructs related to PA among cancer survivors. Methods Post‐treatment colorectal, endometrial, and breast cancer survivors (n=183) living in metropolitan and non‐metropolitan areas completed survey measures of PA, exercise preferences, attitudes, self‐efficacy, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and intention toward PA. Results A structural equation model with adequate fit and quality indice…
