OPTIMIZING STOCHASTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY MODELLING FOR DEBRIS FLOW LANDSLIDES: MODEL EXPORTATION, STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES COMPARISON AND USE OF REMOTE SEN…

The present work has been developed in order to enhance current methodological approaches within the big picture of the landslide susceptibility. In particular, the ce…

Analysis of the influence of the PrP genotype on the litter size in Polish sheep using classification trees and logistic regression

2014

The relation between prion protein (PrP) genotype class and litter size was analysed in Polish Merino, Black-headed, Ile de France and Berrichon du Cher sheep in Poland. Litter size was analysed with the classification tree technique and multiple logistic regression for effects of breed, age of ewe, PrP genotype, litter size of ewe at her birth, and at her rearing and year of ewe's birth. The resulting classification tree was 6-level deep and contained 21 leaves. Age, breed and year of birth were more important determinants of litter size than PrP genotype. Importance of PrP genotype in the tree development was 0.560 relative to age of ewe. While the logistic regression analysis showed that…

Thrombophilic genetic factors PAI-1 4G-4G and MTHFR 677TT as risk factors of alcohol, cryptogenic liver cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis, in a Ca…

2015

The thrombophilic genetic factors (THRGFs), PAI-1 4G-4G, MTHFR 677TT, V Leiden 506Q and Prothrombin 20210A, were studied as risk factors in 865 Caucasian patients with liver cirrhosis, consecutively enrolled from June 2008 to January 2014. A total of 582 HCV, 80 HBV, 94 alcohol, (82 with more than one etiologic factor) and 191 cryptogenic patients with liver cirrhosis had been consecutively enrolled; 243 patients showed portal vein thrombosis (PVT). At least one of the above THRGFs was present in 339/865 patients (39.2%). PAI-1 4G-4G and MTHFR 677TT were the most frequent THRGFs, statistically significant in patients with alcohol, cryptogenic liver cirrhosis, and PVT: respectively 24 and 28…

Impact of non-selective ß-blockers on hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis

2020

Non-selective β-blockers (NSBB) are frequently used for the treatment of portal hypertension and gastroesophageal varices in patients with liver cirrhosis; however prospective studies investigating the potential association between NSBB use and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) are still scarce. We investigated the potential association between NSBB use and the presence of covert HE (CHE) as well as the development of overt HE (OHE).224 patients with liver cirrhosis were included into this cohort study at two German centers and followed for a median of 364 days. CHE was diagnosed by pathological results in the PHES. Predictors for the presence of CHE or the development of OHE were analyzed using …

The association between education level and chronic liver disease of any etiology

2020

Abstract Background The potential link between educational level and chronic liver diseases (CLD) were explored using the mortality records of liver cirrhosis, which lack accuracy and are unable to identify the different etiological factors of liver cirrhosis. Information on the association of low educational level with the severity of CLD is lacking. Aim To evaluate the potential association linking education level to etiology and clinical stage of CLD cases. Methods Consecutive enrolment of 11,107 subjects with CLD aged≥18 years prospectively recruited in two national surveys in 2001 and 2014 at one of the participating Italian liver units throughout the country. Subjects were pooled in t…

Innovation activity of SMEs in different locations

2013

Todtling and Trippl (2005) argue that innovation activity is a key element in regional economic development (see also Ronde and Hussler, 2005; Audretsch and Lehmann, 2005; Cooke, 2005). However, we know little about the formation, development and diffusion of innovations in different milieux. The aim of this study is to clarify the factors – in particular, the regional factors – that affect the innovation activity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Our analyses of the innovation activity of Finnish SMEs revealed that innovation activity is very brisk in towns and relatively brisk in rural areas, although the difference between the two was not statistically significant. A logistic…

Sociodemographic and behavioural correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners: findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

2018

BackgroundNo current data are available on correlates of lifetime sexual partners at older ages. This study aimed to explore correlates of the lifetime number of sexual partners in a sample of older adults.MethodData were from 3054 men and 3867 women aged ≥50 years participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported their lifetime number of sexual partners and a range of sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviours. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was used to examine correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners, with analyses performed separately for men and women and weighted for non-response.ResultsYounger age, being separated/divor…

Introduction: Despite substantial interest in the development of health behaviors, there is limited research that has examined the longitudinal relationship between physical activity (PA) and smoking trajectories from youth to adulthood in a Finnish population. This study aimed to identify trajectories of smoking and PA for males and females, and study the relationship between these trajectories from youth to adulthood. Methods: Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify trajectories of smoking and PA separately for males and females among 3355 Finnish adults (52.1% females). Participants’ smoking and PA were assessed five to eight times over a 31-year period (3–18 years old at the …

Choice of second-line disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs after failure of methotrexate therapy for rheumatoid arthritis: A decision tree for clini…

2009

Objective To survey rheumatologists' preferences for the choice of a second-line disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) after inadequate response with methotrexate (MTX) therapy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods Thirty-six rheumatologists stated their preferences for RA treatment after inadequate response with MTX therapy (optimal dose at least 6 months). From the initial scenario, we derived 54 vignettes varying by rheumatoid factor or anti–cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody presence, swollen joint count, Disease Activity Score in 28 joints, and structural damage. Respondents stated their preference among 5 therapeutic options: MTX continuation, switch to another conventional …

The role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor in patients with acute myocardial infarction: a pilot study.

2011

We assessed whether macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) levels are associated with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We studied 56 patients with AMI (mean age: 67 ± 12 years) and identified those with clinical (Killip class >II) or echocardiographic signs (ejection fraction ≤45%) of LVSD. We evaluated the established cardiovascular risk factors and measured several cardiovascular biomarkers, including M-CSF. Serum M-CSF concentrations (pg/mL) were significantly increased in patients with both clinical and echocardiographic signs of LVSD (460 ± 265 vs 290 ± 210, P = .0103 and 493 ± 299 vs 287 ± 174, P = .0028, respec…
