Hyvinvoinnin rakentuminen Tickle Your Fancy -blogissa

2016

Maisterintutkielma käsittelee hyvinvoinnin rakentumista Tickle Your Fancy -blogissa. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisia hyvinvoinnin representaatioita blogiin rakentuu kielellisten valintojen kautta. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on paljastaa vallalla olevia hyvinvointikäsityksiä ja lisätä ihmisten tietoisuutta niistä. Tutkielman tutkimuskysymys on: Miten hyvinvointia rakennetaan Tickle Your Fancy -blogissa? Apuna vastausten haussa käytetään kahta alakysymystä: 1) Millaisilla sananvalinnoilla hyvinvoinnista puhutaan? 2) Mitä ominaisuuksia hyvinvointiin liitetään? Tutkielmassa hyvinvoinnin representaatioiden rakentumista tarkastellaan kriittisen diskurssintutkimuksen valossa.

Tutkim…

Rail freight transport and demand requirements : an analysis of attribute cut-offs through a stated preference experiment

2014

This paper analyses the choice between road and rail in Spain where rail market share for freight is still residual. Discrete choice models are estimated with data obtained through a two-phase fieldwork, thus allowing us to carry out a stated preference efficient design for each interviewee. We analyse the existence of attribute cut-offs and the presence of a segment of the population with a zero value of frequency. Our results show that ignoring the existence of cut-offs and segments of the population with polarised valuations can lead to erroneous conclusions in terms of the possibilities of rail for absorbing significant quota.

Composition of families and subjective economic well-being: an application to Italian context

2011

Using Italian data on Income and Living Conditions for the year 2005, the paper explores empirically whether the determinants of subjective economic well-being (SEW) differ (or not) in four representative typologies of households. By means of a Partial Proportional Ordered Logit Model the subjective economic well-being – proxied by the capacity of households to make ends meet – has been explored. Results highlight the variables acting on SEW, common to each typology, are related both to economic status (specifically, the capacity to pay taxes and to afford housing, clothes and holiday expenditures) and to socio-demographic status (specifically, the work-status and the highest level of educa…

DETERMINANTS OF PROFITABILITY IN SPANISH FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. COMPARING AIDED AND NON-AIDED ENTITIES

2015

The last financial crisis has led to the greatest contribution of public funds ever made to Spanish banks. This paper studies why the need for support has been asymmetric, with not all of the institutions requiring aid. Based on profitability of assets (ROA), we determine using panel data econometric and logit response models the components of profit and loss accounts that generated profitability as well as the factors leading to some entities to ask for aid. The analyses show that before the beginning of the crisis there were significant differences between entities that needed aid and those that did not. The most profitable banks grounded their success in the traditional revenue component…

Testing for Asymmetric Information in Insurance Markets: A Multivariate Ordered Regression Approach

2016

The positive correlation (PC) test is the standard procedure used in the empirical literature to detect the existence of asymmetric information in insurance markets. This article describes a new tool to implement an extension of the PC test based on a new family of regression models, the multivariate ordered logit, designed to study how the joint distribution of two or more ordered response variables depends on exogenous covariates. We present an application of our proposed extension of the PC test to the Medigap health insurance market in the United States. Results reveal that the risk–coverage association is not homogeneous across coverage and risk categories, and depends on individual so…

Innovation Dynamics in Space: Local Actors and Local Factors

1997

This paper addresses the issue of technogenesis and its geographical pattern. It aims to offer both a general analysis framework and a test on innovation data from several European cities. This framework is mainly built on the product life-cycle and the incubation approach. On the basis of this framework, it is argued that the phases of an industrial life-cycle have several firm-specific effects. First, these phases influence innovativeness and thus profit levels, output and employment of firms in a spatially distinct way. Second, the phases of the life-cycle mirror the importance of local factors for innovations, and third, they affect strategic decisions of firms, inter alia by influencin…

Robot Shift from Industrial Production to Social Reproduction

2015

This chapter analyses people’s attitudes towards the use of robots in the different domains of life and, specifically, in the domain of social reproduction. The analysis is based on Eurobarometer 382 “Public Attitudes towards Robots” data (N = 26,751), which was carried out among EU citizens aged 15 and over in 27 member states in 2012. The results of the study show that on average European perceptions of robots are positive and permissive. The life domains in which robots have already been used for a long time (e.g. space exploration, manufacturing, military and security business, search and rescue work) turn out to be the most popular areas for the further penetration of robots. The least…
