The influence of adult worm age and definitive host on the transmission of Echinostoma caproni: egg hatchability and miracidial infectivity.

2012

AbstractWe analysed the influence of different ages of Echinostoma caproni adult worms reared in different definitive host-species on egg hatchability and miracidial infectivity. Eggs obtained from 2-, 4- and 6-week-old adult worms collected from rats, hamsters and mice, hatched miracidia that were used to infect laboratory-reared specimens of Biomphalaria glabrata. Highest egg hatchability was obtained with eggs derived from hamsters and mice. Egg hatchability did not seem to be affected by the age of E. caproni adult worms. Miracidial infectivity was not affected by the definitive host species. However, miracidial infectivity was affected by the age of adult worms when they developed in t…

Sport and Quality of Life

2022

but also when he took the form of free time practice through which to keep fit making grow in this case the diffusion of a culture of health and well-being. These are two ways of approaching the consumption of sports by spectators and actorIn the last thirty years sport has taken on a very significant meaning in people's lives and albeit with considerable differences both in advanced economic development countries and in developing countries. On an individual level it constituted an area of identity investment when it assumed the shape of “sport spectacle” to be enjoyed fueling the practice of cheering and fandom or constituting the model of a winning lifestyleand the two ways of use can be strongly related to the perception and assessment of the quality of life. The “semantic universes” which however connote sport and “free time sports” have often appeared polarized. Commercial sport and sports professionalism are intertwined with the institutions of economics politics and culture which above all stress its “spectacularity” in order to capture first and foremost the audience. But also the sport of leisure time is intertwined with the actions of the institutions of economics politics and culture with the difference that these stress above all its “healthy value” aimed at the “healthy and rational” investment of time in an activity which improves the quality of life in the short medium and long period. This polarization between the consumption of sport entertainment - commercial sport - and the consumption of sport as a leisure activity - sport for all - has become increasingly interconnected precisely because of the increased collective identity demand via sport. In other words we have witnessed the spread of shape of sports entertainment that recall the importance of sports for psychophysical well-being for integration and social participation for the reduction of social inequalities ethnic and cultural differences and in which the importance assumed was weakened in the show from agonism from competition from the physical confrontation between two contenders or two teams. A sport in which we act with competitors as well as against competitors. And on the other hand we have gradually witnessed the spectacularization of sports in our free time to the point that the sharing of the results obtained through the declination of a competitive spirit that presents itself as directed no longer against other contenders but against its own performance limits it has become the way in which each person makes part of his or her own life spectacular the one he often considers most authentic. The aim of this work is to describe how the intertwining between the commercial/professional dimension of the sports show and the playful/recreational dimension of sports practice are fueled by a demand and an offer of social identity that characterizes these two “semantic universes”.Settore SPS/07 - Sociologia Generale

Passive vs. active degassing modes at an open-vent volcano (Stromboli, Italy)

2012

Abstract We report here on a UV-camera based field experiment performed on Stromboli volcano during 7 days in 2010 and 2011, aimed at obtaining the very first simultaneous assessment of all the different forms (passive and active) of SO 2 release from an open-vent volcano. Using the unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of the UV camera, we obtained a 0.8 Hz record of the total SO 2 flux from Stromboli over a timeframe of ∼14 h, which ranged between 0.4 and 1.9 kg s −1 around a mean value of 0.7 kg s −1 and we concurrently derived SO 2 masses for more than 130 Strombolian explosions and 50 gas puffs. From this, we show erupted SO 2 masses have a variability of up to one order of mag…

A Computerised System for Electrocochleographic (ECOG) Measurement

1982

To study the influence of vitamin A on hearing we choose to examine ECoGs induced by an audible stimulus. The basis of this project is a suitable experimental equipment for inducing and recording inner ear electrical responses in guinea pigs. The problem to be studied asks for a high number of animals and measurements within one animal; furthermore the ECoGs of each animal have to be examined over a long period of time. This calls for a simple and automated measurement and evaluation procedure. In contrats to most ECoG experiments we do not study the influence of special oto — toxic agents (noise, drugs etc) but examine the variation of ECoG signals as caused by different metabolic states of …

Percutaneous Nephropyelostomy and Endo-Urological Manipulations

1982

After a long period of neglect (Goodwin et al. 1955), percutaneous nephropyelostomy (PNS) has gained general acceptance and replaced operative nephrostomy. In addition, the percutaneous approach has led to a number of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The objective of this review is not to give a complete and detailed survey of PNS but rather to report on our technique and results with fine needle nephrostomy and various endo-urological manipulations.

The history of meniscal-surgery

2000

In comparison with other operative procedures, the history of meniscal-surgery offers some particular differences. Over a long period of time injuries of the semilunar-cartilages of the knee-joint were not generally recognised. In the 18th century only was the clinical picture roughly outlined. There is evidence, that parts of the meniscus were removed much earlier than we have historic proof of. These meniscal fragments were generally mistaken for "loose bodies" in the joints, not knowing the exact etiology. Operative interference with joints was afflicted with a very high incidence of infections and thus complications. Due to this reliable standards of sterility were imperative to obtain …

Efficient interrogation method of forward Brillouin scattering in optical fibers using a narrow bandwidth long-period grating

2020

A new technique, to the best of our knowledge, for the characterization of the effective refractive index modulation in optical fibers due to transverse acoustic mode resonances excited by electrostriction is reported. The resonances excited by an optical pulse are probed by a narrow bandwidth long-period grating (LPG) inscribed in the fiber, which is interrogated by a continuous wave (CW) beam. The LPG used in this experiment has a narrow bandwidth and high sensitivity to small mode index perturbations, allowing the measurement of index variations from below 10 − 9 to 10 − 6 . Radial and torsional-radial acoustic modes were characterized up to 1.1 GHz. The linewidth of resonances was found…

Tooth replacement rates in early chondrichthyans: a qualitative approach

2009

The continuous replacement of teeth throughout their lifetime is a common characteristic of most chondrichthyans. This process was already present in the earliest representatives of the group. It has been well established that different species of extant sharks show rapid tooth replacement rates; however, some authors have suggested that in early chondrichthyans this rate might have been much slower. Here we present a qualitative approach to analyse tooth replacement rates in the Early Devonian shark Leonodus carlsi, the earliest tooth-bearing shark known to date. For this, we have examined 1,103 isolated teeth from Celtiberia, Spain. Our study provides strong evidences of an extremely slow…
