Determination of Parabens in Cosmetics without Previous Extraction by Micellar Liquid Chromatography

1999

A simple and rapid micellar liquid chromatography method for the determination of p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters (methyl-, ethyl-, n-propyl-, and n-butylparaben) in cosmetics (bath foam, milk lotion, hand cream, cream base, and shampoo) is described. The samples are solved with n-propanol, further diluted with more n-propanol or with an aqueous sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) micellar solution, and injected. Separations are performed with a micellar mobile phase containing 0.1M SDS, 2.5% n-propanol, 10mM phosphate (pH 3), and with an octadecyl silica column (C 18 ). Calibrations are linear (correlation coefficient r > 0.999) and the limits of detection range from 0.03 to 0.3 ng paraben. The det…

Simultaneous detection of hazardous skin whitening agents in Indian cosmetic products using a green chromatographic technique

2021

The present work mainly highlights the simultaneous detection of four skin whitening agents i.e. hydroquinone (HQ), resorcinol (RS), catechol (CC) and 3,3′-dichlorobenzidine (DCB) in facial creams and body lotion. Among these, the first three are positional isomers of dihydroxybenzene so simultaneous separation is difficult with the conventional reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic technique (RP-HPLC). The selected skin whitening agents were detected in facial cream and body lotion using micellar liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector (MLC-PDA). In the present study, optimization of the method was accomplished using response surface methodology (RSM) w…

Novel yeast extract is superior to colloidal oatmeal in providing rapid itch relief

2020

Background Approximately, 13.5% of the population suffers from chronic itch. Many cosmetic and pharmaceutical treatments for itch are available; however, cosmetic treatments are not reliably effective and most pharmaceutical formulations carry the risk of adverse events with chronic use. Aims Previously, we have reported a novel extraction process of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, that is, Baker's yeast. The extract obtained from the novel process demonstrates superior anti-itch properties compared to other yeast extracts. In our previous study, we demonstrated that, after 30 minutes, the extract significantly reduced itch when compared to a placebo lotion (P = .002). Methods In the present stud…

An environmentally friendly (“green”) reversed-phase liquid chromatography method for UV filters determination in cosmetics

2005

Abstract A green procedure based on reversed-phase liquid chromatography with gradient elution using environmentally friendly solvents, has been developed to determine 18 UV filters, which are most used in Europe nowadays as sunscreen in cosmetics. Samples were weighed and dissolved in ethanol. Two aliquots were taken from the initial sample solution to prepare two solutions, so analytes could be determined chromatographically in two groups (the most fat-soluble and the easily water-soluble ones) using a different gradient elution program for each group. The mobile phases were based on mixtures of ethanol and 1% acetic acid or 1% sodium acetate buffer pH 4.75. The same C18 stationary phase …

Metalotioneiny i motywy policysteinylowe : oddziaływanie z jonami metali

2018

Many of biochemical paths and processes require some metal ions to occur. There are also known the negative effects of the presence of metal ions in the organism. The both sides of metal ions interactions on the living organism require specific regulations and cannot be left without supervision and control of the organism itself. One of the strategy to keep the control on metal ions are cystein-rich proteins that play crucial role in detoxication of metal ions that are dangerous for human organism as well as they help to maintain homeostasis of essential metal ions. Matallothioneins are one of the well known, but still not fully understood, cysteine- rich proteins. They are small proteins b…
