'[I]t wasn’t in the picture and is not': Blind Spots and Vanishing Points in Irish Poetical Self-Portraits

International audience; Pictoriality and a propensity for self-examination and self-representation are characteristic of the poetry of Louis MacNeice, Derek Mahon, Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon. In many a poem, these four contemporary Irish poets try to capture their own portraits in words and images, through highly visual poems often inspired by paintings. This paper first examines how these poets use images and invest paintings, how verbal and iconic texts interact in their creations and to what extent self-exegesis is made possible and more successful through ekphrasis. Short report - A new case report of human Mesocestoides infection in the United States

The twenty-seventh documented case of human Mesocestoides infection, which corresponds to the seventh documented case in the United States, is reported. The case had its origin in Alexandria, Louisiana in the summer of 1998. The patient was a 19-month-old boy. The strobila consisted of 35 proglottids that included mature as well as gravid segments containing a ventral genital pore and a parauterine organ. After a detailed microscopic examination, the tapeworm was identified as belonging to the genus Mesocestoides. Znaczenie polityczno-militarne Würzburga i innych państw Rzeszy Niemieckiej w początkach wojny o sukcesję hiszpańską w oczach dyplomacji francuskiej

Pod koniec XVII w. Europa Zachodnia stała u progu wojny o sukcesję hiszpańską. W związku z bezpotomną śmiercią Karola II Habsburga zarówno Ludwik XIV, jak i Leopold VI byli zainteresowani obsadzeniem tronu w Madrycie. Mimo wcześniejszych porozumień i uzgodnień dotyczących ewentualnego podziału Hiszpanii Francja i cesarz szykowali się do wojny. Najpewniej – ponieważ analizowany dokument nie ma daty – w 1700 r. dyplomaci francuscy podjęli się próby eksplikacji możliwości ewentualnego poparcia politycznego i militarnego Ludwika XIV przez niektórych książąt i biskupów niemieckich. Na tej podstawie opracowano niezwykle interesujący memoriał, który jest podstawą rozważań w tym artykule.

Resisting Bodies: Power Crisis / Meaning Crisis in the Zombie Film from 1932 to Today

Critics have repeatedly focused on the political subtexts of the living dead films of George A. Romero, revealing, notably, how they reflect specific social concerns. In order to determine what makes the zombie movie and the figure of the zombie so productive of political readings, this article examines, first, the classic zombie movies influenced by voodoo lore, then Romero’s initial living dead trilogy (1968-1985), and finally some of the most successful films released in the 2000s. En este artículo se intentará esbozar una definición semiótica a través de una breve relectura de algunos clásicos y de algunas entradas de vocabulario, para sugerir una caracterización de la violencia como dispositivo semiótico: una articulación de dos figuras diferentes de agresión («laceración»/«constricción») contra un umbral convencional. This article focuses on Leopoldo Cicognara's role as an advisor of the Italian publisher Giachetti (Prato). After a brief analysis of three key publications (Cicognara's history of sculpture; Séroux d'Agincourt's history of medieval and early-modern Art; Winckelmann's history of ancient art), the authors discuss the role of censorship and its consequences for nineteenth-century art books. The documentary appendix includes a complete transcription of all reports by the Florentine censor p. Mauro Bernardini.
