Trade, innovation and interdependence : a spatial econometric approach

2015

This thesis studies the consequences for innovation of international trade allowing for spatial interdependence. Indeed, the mechanisms through which international trade affects innovation are based on highlighting factors that, because they are the source of increasing returns, represent real engines of the growth. Yet, the accumulation process of these factors depends on effects which are constraints in space .First, trade flows by which technology is supposed to transmit between countries are interdependent. Second, the results highlighted in existing literature capture only the direct effect of trade on innovation. However, it is possible that a country benefits technology from an anoth…

Music festivals as mediators and their influence on consumer awareness

2020

Abstract Cultural products compete for public awareness in markets with high uncertainty, oversupply and a short product life cycle. Altogether, this means that only a small fraction of all releases generate the necessary consumer awareness to achieve a significant commercial success. This paper aims at identifying the informational function music festivals serve in cultural markets and how it translates into consumer discovery of cultural supply. To do so, we empirically measure informational spillover effects to performers at an established music festival. We hypothesize that this effect stems from the reputation attached to the brand equity of cultural organizations, is asymmetric, as it…

Critical review of the philosophical anthropology of the mature Tolstoy about the body in love. His novel Resurrection shows that the quality of the writer’s late literary works was hindered by his religious ideas about women and sexuality, which entailed dubious platonizing and idealistic dualisms in the descriptions of the main characters’ motives.

Sappho, Hegel and Michael Field: Paradox and desire in lyric III

2021

This article offers a close reading of Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper’s lyric III in Long Ago, a Sapphic volume of verse published in 1889 under the collaborative nom de plume of Michael Field. This collection articulates a dramatic inquiry into the tragedy of unrequited love in a long cycle of lyrics whose third piece most effectively encapsulates the kernel of what the Fields reconstruct as Sappho’s ambivalent eroticism. The outcome of this reconstruction, as analysed in light of lyric III, is a consistent Hegelian view of desire that subsumes a complex system of tropes, myths, paradoxes and imaginative strategies under an overarching ideology of desire as a radical experience of appr…

“Audacem faciebat amor” : Thisbe, an Ovidian Heroine from Antiquity to the 15th century

2022

In the Middle Ages, the fable of Pyramus and Thisbe from Ovid's Metamorphoses and older sources presents a range of varied representations, translated, reworked, transposed to serve literary, allegorical and moral purposes. This timeless love story has been adapted to multiples genres and purposes and became part of the literary and pictorial collective imagination. We explore the multiform reception of this fable to the 15th century in Latin and vernacular texts along with their illustrations in order to draw its diachronic evolution from its origins. We try to understand how authors appropriate the myth and deliver their own interpretation according to the context by filtering the element…

Job insecurity and well-being: A longitudinal study among male and female employees in finland

1999

Abstract Job insecurity has grown dramatically in Finland, as elsewhere. This study examined the relationships between a specific job stressor, i.e. job insecurity, and occupational, overall and family well-being, by utilizing one-year follow-up data collected among male and female employees in Finland. Occupational well-being was assessed via job exhaustion, overall well-being via somatic symptoms, and family well-being via work spillover into parenthood. The study was carried out by means of questionnaires, which were completed twice, in 1995 and in 1996 by employees in four organizations. This article is based on the data of those respondents (n = 219)j who participated in the study in b…

Liturgy and Philanthropy Today

2020

The Liturgy is the holy and the sanctifying divine service in which the most merciful love of God for men or the divine Philanthropy is celebrated in the most intense way. The true Liturgy takes place in heaven and in this sense there is only one Liturgy, that of the perfect love of the Holy Trinity in which all creatures are called to participate. Human beings connected through the body to this world can do so through the cultic ritual, which is in essence, a diastole, an exit of God’s love to the world, in order to attract through the systole of his love all creatures to the life of communion. The Eucharistic Liturgy is this universal dynamism that draws the whole cosmos to union with God…

L’eros che non c’è. Meraviglie e contraddizioni dell’amore

2020

Perché l’amore resiste a ogni delusione, e siamo sempre tutti pronti a investire ancora sulle sue lusinghe?
